We are currently borrowing a teacher from another school - she is an expert on SIMS and helping us set up Registers etc. What would be the recommended permissions on the Staff log on I set up for her - the request is currently for Domain Admin!

I'm still stuck with this one. My thinking is it must be a Windows 7 permission issue of some sort - the strange thing about it being that it's only a few students getting hit with the problem.l

I'm thinking the BIG downside is when the battery fails - as it inevitably will and the device has to be swapped by Apple to achieve a new battery. That's going to be a right pain and also surely holds some security issues?

We are a KS3 Emotionally Disturbed Boys (EDB)school with a maximum of 8 students per class. We have a Windows 2008 Domain with a mix of XP Pro and Windows 7 clients. We achieve very good results with the Photography GCSE which is taught / worked in a remote classroom which is currently networked by wireless (Ruckus). On too many occasions I'm getting moans that the boys work won't save in Word 2010 (it will save in Open Office all the time) and saving the images on the network take too long. We do seem to suffer this issue with home folders dropping off in Windows 7 but apart from that I'm wondering if some sort of local storage in the remote classroom might be worth investigating for the photo work. I'm also looking at getting the classroom wired to the network.

I don't know about other contributors to this Forum but myself feel great when anyone clicks the 'thanks' button on the rare occasions when I have something useful to contribute - rather than is my normal just being an avid visitor to the Forum to ask questions. This is just a suggestion to folk who, like myself, post questions and get useful answers that it would be appreciated by those who so freely give the answers to click the thank you button occasionally. Has the printer been set up on the PC by an Administrator first. Not sure if its essential but that seems to work for my Windows 7. Clients.

Great to see the Devizes School system being recommended. I know the two guys who developed it. Both salt of the Earth. For a tender donation to the school it leaves me wondering why anyone would even be looking at another system.

Thanks Steve T. Only just picked this up. Might be the way forward. The room is going to be 8.5M long by about 5.5M wide. So, not a huge lot of space. Your 'Booth' concept sounds good to me. We are running Impero but to date I have not set any of the teachers up with it. Any further best use suggestions on the space would be most welcome.

Think I might have cracked this one with trial and error - it seems the client needs a restart for each certificate.

We are running a Windows Server 2008 Domain with a mix of XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro Clients. Windows update service pushes out the updates to the clients. Recently I have noticed that even though KB931125 displays in the updates history on client machines it persistently shows up on the XP machines on the Yellow coloured shield as needing installing. Doing so it pops up again a few minutes later, despite, as said earlier showing in History as correctly installed? Googling this it looks like it's something to do with Root Certificate Trusts. As I haven't ever been there I wondered if anyone has a current update knowledge to sort this small but irritating issue please.

Another vote for Mac Mini and in view of your latest post DJ I'd also recommend getting a quote from Ross at EduMac, Apple Education Consultant to look at setting your system up. It won't break the bank and you will probably learn a shed load of useful stuf if you get him in as we'll - I certainly did!

Bit of a strange one that I can't crack here. I have just set up two new Windows 7 64 bit PCs that connect to the network by wireless (Ruckus). They are fine on my Admin logon but with a student logon they fail to pick up either the student's home folder or network shares. Oddly from Explorer printers etc are visible but the drives aren't - some sort of permission issue? 32 bit machines in the same remote classroom are ok.

I have a bit of a strange issue. A standard Smartboard which was running ok but since I have put a Lenovo ThinkCentre on it with Windoes 7 OS the repeated image is not showing the top of that which is shown on the monitor. However, thatv said when a DVD is run it's fine. The BIOS was set bwrong on the PC so I changed that but it's made no difference to the output to the Smartboard. Any ideas or suggestions on this one please?

I have a PC which had a disk fail. On rebuild with Windows 7 Pro I ran the Impero Client MSI - Impero fails to working and I'm getting a Microsoft.NET Framework 'unhandled exception' message popping up (constantly). details below. This doesn't mean a thing to me - hopefully it makes sense to someone on here? The excellent support guys at Impero have spent a fair bit of time on this with me today but the problem persists. If Impero seems to partially install then the 'unhandled exception' message pops up - the Impero consul icon is desktoped but trying to run it fails to contact the server. Uninstalling the Impero components again makes the PC happy. Any ideas please? My next step is to wipe the HD and set the PC up again. Sadly we aren't running images! BBC News - GCSEs replaced by 'English Bac' in key subjects this is the final straw for me as far as this Coalition Government is concerned. When, if ever will these politicians learn to stop messing about with Education? As the Pink Floyd song says 'Leave The Kids Alone' - good grief too many of them are over stressed with all the pressures of the existing over tinkered system and constant changes and it's not like as if Government is doing anything to make their paths into adulthood and work any easier. I'm sure I have seen an answer to my question here before but can't find it in a search. One of our XP machines has gone kaput - it's looking like a hard disk corruption. I'm trying to install Windows 7 on it now but it's looking like the HD is too corrupted to take it. It will be a new Hard Disk job I think. My actual question is can I rejoin the PC when it's rebuilt to Server 2008 AD as the same machine. I have currently disabled the account in AD.

@witch is spot on @slugster66 sounds like it's completely the responsibility of the folk who did the installation. As a matter of interest where in the UK are you and how big is your school?

When I have had a reason 0 it usually turns out to be the path isn't being found with the - I'm pretty sure it's called - connect.ini file in the Programme/Sims directory. Copying the file (or content of the file) from a PC that does connect ok usually sorts it for me.

Had a similar problem then I stumbled upon Ross and his team at Education Mac, Apple Education Consultant one visit from Ross gave me happy Mac users and a Mini Mac Server set up and working happily with AD. it didn't cost an arm and a leg either but certainly saved the school many of my hours trying to achieve what came naturally to Ross. We now have a very reassuring and not hugely expensive contract with EduMac to keep the Macs sweet. Highly recommended.
