That's another old term, it's "gender reassignment surgery" or more recently "gender confirmation surgery" is starting to appear as the term.

I would be very surprised if any school with a full staff list on the website actually got all the employees to consent to that data going up there.

"they" might not have control over what goes on the website (imagine if it's a science teacher or something rather than the head), or the people who do might not know they don't identify with that gender yet.

I also agree, while there isn't really a "legal" title (you can pick what you want unless it's got restrictions such as Dr, Lord/Lady etc) someone's title/name/public appearance are unlikely to match the gender they identify with at some part of their life - usually between working out what is wrong, and transitioning, for example a friend delayed her transition until her pupils had left school (they attended the school she worked at), or personally in my case I waited until I'd spent a fortune on facial hair removal. Also (although I'm aware we're probably off-topic) I'd like to pick up that "sex change" referred to earlier is a very outdated term, and that name/title can be changed on anything, and the gender marker on pretty much everything but pension/tax/police records without the need for any sort of surgical procedure or obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC). (You need a GRC in order to get an updated birth certificate). (Whoops, this thread annoyed me enough to out myself.)

Never worked out why everyone jumped all over bit.ly etc when they came out, I hate URL shortening (especially when it's "click here", and here is hyperlinked to a shortened URL... no need) - no way of knowing where it's going to take you until you've clicked it.

We still get the element of surprise when we need to move a motherboard to a new case for some reason, and there's no pinout for the front panel connector etched into the board, no manual online... "which way round do we plug these LEDs to make sure we don't blow them". I do sort of fondly remember the days of jumpers on the motherboard to tell it what CPU was in etc, but only when it was a one off e.g. home build... wouldn't want to have to poke about with motherboard jumpers at work on 400 machines. Also miss the days of doing our own PC builds here, in an IT lab with the benches cleared and just rows of cases, big box of motherboards, box of CPUs etc but it's just not worth the price difference vs a pre-built one especially when you're comparing DIY with 1 year parts warranty vs something with 3 year warranty for the entire system.

I can see it both ways really - "You sent us the FoI request, you should know who we are...." although if we had to deal with all this FoI stuff* we'd probably fill out a "school name" as part of the response (or if it's an email response, it's there in the email signature anyway, and the sender's domain) * Independent so we don't have anything to do with FoI.

My memory of PCI modems is you have to do everything in a precise order, plus have some luck thrown in, otherwise COM3 that it wants to use just never turns up in whatever Device Manager was called back in Win95 days. This is why I always used a nice external modem plugged into a physical real COM port. (Plus I trusted a US Robotics external modem more than some el cheapo dodgy PCI one with the instructions in Chinese) - and I wanted to stick the modem on a machine running NT which was a no-go with the PCI one.

Depends what generation you need, I've got one of the really old ones that use the pens with the orange stripes (but it's USB rather than Serial) going spare - but I've no cables etc for it. Near Blackpool. Edit: Think it's a 78". Edit2: If you're just borrowing I can probably dig out the cables too, would definitely need the cables back though as they're harder to get hold of than the boards!

This. From personal experience, ANYTHING is a better experience than trying to deal with Virgin Business direct.

We had roaming profiles for Win 10 but quickly scrapped them for local, the only thing that doesn't work is Outlook when they move PCs (unless it's already set up on that PC's local profile) - so it's just a case of them clicking Next on the wizard. (We try and get them to use the web based one instead).

Not quite the same but similar, we have changed our domain (from our "Sunday Name".com to the name on all the branding.com). I added the new domain to 365, changed everyone's UPN to use this new domain, changed the mail attribute on everyone's AD user and amended everyone's proxyAddresses attribute so that the new domain was the default and the old one was an alias. We didn't do anything like renaming the AD domain (we can't as its set to school.trust.org.uk). (I discovered if you're using ADFS you have to run Set-MsolUserPrincipalName on everyone to go via the onmicrosoft.com address, you can't just move from one federated domain to another for some reason)

We have a similarly "fun" time getting anything out of finance, I found trying to make it as easy as possible for them helped - e.g. if there's a specific telephone budget ask for a listing of anything paid on it (which should show the supplier), you won't have the invoice that way but at least you'd have the supplier name. In my case I managed to find out the nominal code for the phones budget to make it even easier for them to look up and send me a listing off PSF. I've got a friend who works for a telecomms supplier and he says they can query the network to see what company "owns" the line, although it's not 100% successful, so if you could get hold of the numbers for each line (17070 even if there's no active service on the line) then any provider should be able to do that.

There is an option where it asks you for the hostname in the RDS setup (and for the certificate), if you put in an external name here it will use this - while we don't have a .local we're on the end of the trust's .org.uk which isn't resolveable from outside, so we have remote.school.com on our RDS and the SSL cert. (Can't remember where the setting lives off the top of my head)

We worked out how much bandwidth the CCTV was going to use up, and looked at the current utilisation to see there was LOADS of spare so just created a new vlan across all switches and ran CCTV over that. Our old CCTV had a physically separate network on the roof with a box every 100m containing power adapters and a mini switch, it's been so much more reliable (and easier to look after) since we brought it inside and onto the main network infrastructure.

I just did this last week! I use tapelabel.de but unfortunately don't have any labels that fit their templates, so it's either "print onto blank whole A4 label sheet and cut out", or what I did was paste them into the 7x2 (14 a page) avery template in Word and print that way, then cut them out. Bit of a pain but didn't take too long to do 24 tapes (and cost nothing). Annoyingly I discovered the paperwork that came with the tape library whilst tidying later on and it had a pack of 60 labels with it... so depends who makes your tape library as to whether they will do them too. Other option is to create them yourself as it's just a Code 39 barcode.

I got it working in the end - I had everything set up correctly, and I wasn't using the same VLAN ID in static and dynamic, the problem was the firmware on the 6 month old AC Pros needed updating - once that was done they just worked as expected. Surprising that something like dynamic VLAN is only a recent addition to them really.

Could you send me prices too please @eddrogers84, interested in some of the 2530's.

If anyone else can't get it to work try a firmware update, didn't think a 6 month old AP's firmware would be so out of date that something like dynamic VLAN wouldn't work!

How do you actually get unifi APs to listen to the VLAN provided by RADIUS? I managed to get it to work with the HP access points but the same settings won't work on the Unifi. NPS log shows it's giving out the correct information, the WLAN on unifi is set to use a radius server with dynamic VLAN, where there's already a wlan with the same VLAN assigned static I've taken that out, but devices connect and DHCP off the same VLAN that the AP itself sits on.

Thanks. I ended up working it out myself as I already had NPS configured for the "domain laptops" SSID. Got it working on the HP - after a lot of googling I found a tick box needed to be not ticked for it to use the VLAN assigned by RADIUS - and it wasn't obvious or clear that it had anything to do with VLANs at all. (Not attempted it on the unifi yet as it's a long walk in the cold to the building that has unifi) Shame you can't select a VLAN by user in NPS, had to create a security group for "staff ipads" and "student ipads", each with a single user in which will then be saved into the ipad settings via MDM.

We have folder redirection set up and "admin" (actually a group containing IT staff accounts) access works - it sounds like you have "Grant the user exclusive rights to Documents" ticked which is the one that messes with permissions. On ours we have this on the second tab:

Definitely, not helped by the fact everything's "cloud hosted" meaning they all use the same set of domains (e.g. anything on AWS) so how do you then determine which is the education site and which isn't, when they also appear to randomly change...

We splashed out the extra cash at the start and made it one remote per teacher rather than one per room - only works if you have the same projectors everywhere (or multiple models that share the same remote). They still go missing though.
