+1 for ArranPaul. After going down the "I'll have a research then buy something" route myself, I'd definitely recommend getting somebody who has a clue what they're talking about in. Waste of money on ours (which like others work fine when we test them but as soon as you stick them on a guest speaker, it's fading in and out and all sorts of rubbish)

How do you do bulk mailing? We use the built in features on our MIS for spamming out to parents, but the guy who looks after the alumni group wants to mail all his contacts and is trying from outlook (obviously failing as it's nearly 3000 addresses). Most of these aren't in the "past pupils" section of the MIS as they pre-date it, so how does everyone else do this kind of thing? Hoping for something that's free.

We have them but they're optional - although they are paxton cards so if you don't want to put the code in every time you enter the building (or want access out of hours) you need one. Not sure why they aren't compulsory really, we make visitors wear lanyards - that way anyone not in school uniform would have either a visitor or staff lanyard (6th form here have a sort-of uniform - e.g. smart business dress but there's a couple of branded items e.g. tie etc making it obvious they're students). As with others it seems to be enforced in the state sector (at least it is in the academies I've visited in our trust) but not independents. We use PIN release for the printing.

Not sure why it's set up like that, presumably they don't want a trust but need to look after both servers (although they could still do that on separate IP ranges with a router), but the way to leave it as is but avoid manually entering DNS is just put a conditional forwarder on the one set in DHCP to forward requests for the other domain to it's DCs (and probably best to do the same on the other DC too) - that way you can resolve names for either domain from either dns server, no manually setting them.

On our Meraki MDM we have prevented apps being installed onto the student devices, but it still allows managed apps to be pushed out via VPP, so it is possible if you can get the devices on the MDM. Problem the comes with it being BYOD you have to basically cripple their personal device for it to be used at school (and it's not feasible to remove/re-install the management when they go home/come back in). (On the staff devices we allow the app store and they have to sign in with their own apple ID)

Running gpupdate doesn't fix it for us, have to restart the computer and 90% of the time they come back.

99% uptime still allows for just over 87 hours of downtime per year though.

Wait, there's a 6 *am*? Never knew that! I'd either schedule a morning of downtime to do them all (during the holidays), or if they're spread over the school possibly spread it over multiple days doing one area a day (with a shorter period of downtime on each of the days local to each area, depending on who is in and whether less downtime for each area would be better received than more downtime everywhere)

I really don't get it at all now, I thought they had got rid of ProPlus licences and replaced with "A1 Plus" (it wouldn't let us renew our ProPlus but let us have A1 plus which includes exactly the same as ProPlus did). But your screenshot clearly shows ProPlus. Would love for Microsoft licensing to actually make sense one day!

This caught me out this morning, luckily we only have one 2008R2 left (which we can't upgrade without paying a fortune to get a new licence key for Ringdale FollowMe as it's tied to a "hardware ID" which changes if you alter anything, and in-place upgrade to 2012R2 fails)

It's not "ProPlus" any more - for us, we had to sign in with a new teacher account (which has not had any licences assigned) and pick "I'm a teacher" and that made whatever ProPlus is called these days appear in the licences. Repeat with a student account to get the student version. Edit: Found the instructions

I did have all icons removed and disabled (or whatever the policy is called), however with how useless windows 10 has been with start menus I relented and put a copy of the pinned tiles onto the desktop, for when the pinned tiles were missing: Edit: "Subject Progra...." is "Subject Program Links" - this opens an explorer window with subject folders, each full of shortcuts to their installed software. Saves filling up the start menu (or now desktop) with it. Also, "Old Outlook" = Outlook 2016, "Outlook 365" = OWA. I tried to get rid of outlook 2016 completely but had to add it back in

I'm going to try the gpupdate fix on the next few that complain about no printers here and see how it goes (We deploy via GPP). It's ridiculous that 2 years after RTM (and numerous updates) that Windows 10 still can't have printers in a networked environment reliably.

I suppose so, considering he was given 2 years to live in 1963, to make it anywhere near 2018 is incredible. Still a very sad day for science.

It also said somewhere that 1 in 12 are thrown in the bin. I just save mine up then chuck them in one of those coin machines at the supermarket, occasionally if I've not emptied them all out of my purse I'll use correct change for paying for something ending in 9. Suppose they will have to change all the 99p prices to 95p now (or push them up to the next pound but then psychologically they're "a pound more").
