Oooh probably, I forgot it forces it into appdata. Pretty useless when it needs to be installed multiple times for everyone (once per user per machine, so for people who move machines a nightmare), how's everyone else find it (or manage to get it to not be a total nightmare)?

Does the new client need any AppX packages installed? On a fresh install (but from MDT so it removed all the AppX stuff) double clicking the onedrive EXE does nothing

By looking at this thread I'd say everyone on here is in a rural school! Or maybe urban schools are too boring to get posted about. The only one I can think of for here: You know you're in an independent when they only introduced football as a sport option in the last few years. (Plus echoing previous ones about Dominos and about the kids nearly all being polite etc, was a shock to my new tech who came from the state sector)

That's the risk the school takes when it decides "no overtime or time off in lieu" - prioritise saving on a bit of overtime over potentially disrupting the start of the day. I usually do a few hours a week from home but whilst watching TV and it's usually something I want to experiment with and haven't had time to do during the day. Anything else I take the time off in lieu e.g. staying late to tech an event I'll have the same morning off, or last year when I migrated all the VMs off the SAN over a long weekend (from home) so I could flatten it and set up sensibly sized LUNs I took a week or so of half days spread about. Edit: As above I encourage the team to stick to their hours (although we're more flexible around starting and finishing - so long as they do the 37.5 hours it doesn't matter what times too much)

We used to use .local but changed when I scrapped everything and built a new domain in about 2005. Whilst everything will still work if you use .local you might discover that (like .school) they decide .local will be the latest gTLD meaning anyone can register school.local. You'll also not be able to get "real" SSL certificates for your schoolname.local AD domain but again not really a problem if you use AD's CA for all your local certs. Basically if you already have a network running with .local you can probably leave it as it is and just hope .local doesn't become a TLD, if you are setting something up new then use a domain you have actually registered (even if it doesn't resolve to anything from outside school).

Another thing to try, if you can get near enough to the projector (i.e. it's not hanging from the ceiling high up in the hall), do all these devices work straight into the back of it and only fail to work with the long HDMI/ethernet adapter?

I removed those four updates (didn't bother with the Excel one) and it made no difference.. but then I restarted and everything worked again. So whether it was just an update that needed following with a restart, or one of those updates that needs uninstalling, no idea.

I'm going to remove the above updates one at a time and see if it starts working again. Set them all to declined on WSUS so hopefully no other PC is going to get them.

I've had a couple of people report that publisher/powerpoint/word are crashing when they attempt to open them. I'm suspecting a windows update as the cause but waiting for WSUS to generate a report. Has anyone else had anything like this (or worked out which update has caused it)? We're on the volume version of 2016. Me! I did my 2003 MCSA through a training centre but I booked the exams myself (as the training place wasn't an exam centre). More recently I got the books for 2008 and did the learning and the exam booking. And just recently I've bought the exam books, some practise tests and booked an exam for 2016. You just click the link on the MS exam page and it will take you to Pearson's website where you either find an exam centre and book or opt for an online one (where there is someone watching you on webcam but you can do the exam from home). Same price per exam for each (£113 + VAT or £62 + VAT academic pricing).

Ours are 5,000 local/national and 2,000 mobile per channel, but when you've got 8 channels it might as well be unlimited - we use about 3,000 out of the 40,000 free local/national ones a month.

We pay £8.95 per channel. Will be having words though now I've seen this £4 odd price knocking about! Still loads cheaper than ISDN even at £8.95 x 8 though.

M3 Data Recovery says it will work with damaged BitLocker drives (you will still need the password or recovery key though)

When you come to do the exams, put your job role as Student and then go through the verification and it knocks them down from £113 to £62 + VAT a go. Read up the small print and it says "academic pricing applies to staff as well as students, set your job to student etc". One of the verification options is "school provided email address" so nice and easy. I've got the MS Press books for 70-740,741,742, the Measureup practise exams and going to watch the free MVA videos already linked above too. Starting with 70-741 as it was the smaller book. Takes a while to get back into the MS question style after a 6 year gap (read the wording VERY carefully as I'm sure they word things in an attempt to trip you up)

I've found they will only start to take it seriously when something actually happens to those doing it (e.g. disciplinary action) rather than just being written in a policy that doesn't in reality get enforced.

We use Gamma for the SIP trunks and run our own Toshiba system (soon to change to fusionPBX) in house.

We got 24 ipad minis on a 2 year lease to trial, expecting them to be trashed by the end of it. Turns out nobody in the seniors really wanted to touch them but the junior school loved them, so we will be buying them out at the end of the lease and keeping them. Staff ipads for the junior school we just bought outright as we expect them to last longer than 2 years. We get our ipads from Albion and our leasing from CHG. Advantage in our situation was it's slightly cheaper to do a 2 year lease then give them back than it is to buy them, split the cost over two years whilst still giving us the option to pay some extra and keep them if we wanted to. Disadvantage being it's more expensive than buying outright if you want to keep them at the end of the lease (and expect to get a much longer life out of them).

We also have some printers which are on cost per copy (no lease cost and we haven't purchased them) but they are twice as expensive as the big copiers which we are leasing (as they have to make the money to cover the cost of the printer somewhere). Ideal for places where the volume isn't large enough to be worth leasing/buying something just to get the cheaper running costs.

I'm not a morning person. I feel absolutely wrecked while getting up/driving to work/the first hour or so, then I start to wake up and leave a lot less tired than when I got there. Unless I've had a particularly rubbish night's sleep or something.

We run ours on a linux VM, 21 APs. Free vs paying for the cloud key was an obvious choice, I think the cloud key is aimed at smaller installations where you can't just spin up a VM for the controller. Not 100% sure but I think the second port is so you can get 2Gbps throughput (or maybe 1Gbps per antenna) if you connect two cables.

We probably need to review this too so will be interesting to watch this thread. We cycle our tapes in 6 sets - weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, (1, 2, 3,) 8, (1, 2, 3,) 12. Nothing is stored off-site - server room is roughly in the middle of a 34 acre plot where we store on disk, another copy on disk is the far edge of the plot in one direction, and the set on tape is the edge of the plot in the opposite direction.

We lease and pay cost per copy which includes the toner and all servicing/maintenance/call outs etc. If we could afford it we'd buy outright and pay the same cost per copy to include the toner/servicing etc. as it works out slightly cheaper than a 5 year lease.. however lots cheaper if we wanted to run the devices for longer than 5 years - however since when has a copier placed in a school environment made it past its 5th birthday without being a creaking mess?
