I use the right-angled sata connections usually as i find these easier to handle and save a lot of space when connected to drives as they don't need as much room on the drive its elf. I built a SFF pc and used sata and found that the cable touched the back of something can't remember what it was now (case or CPU) and to get around it i had to bend it right by the connection. I found out about the corner thing and so opted to replace with right-angled cables instead.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that the emphasis of this machine is "Air". I think it is looking at an alternative way to work as well as being a very lightweight and portable device. I am by no means saying that its the best piece of equipment ever to grace you presence but you do have to admire the ingenuity to come up with something that has drastically reduced the foot print of a system and use the latest technology at the same time. The HDD size is small since it is a 1.8 " device. They could have used the Ipod HDD (there must be a reason why they didn't) and the SSD is spanking new. How many other devices have cutting edge SSD inside a laptop at 64GB in size? To put yourself constantly in the frame for implementing new ideas and ways of working while using the latest technologies is always going to be a risky game and most companies in ICT just stick to the safe game where they all look the same and at a mid-range price just to keep ticking over. If all companies were the same there would never be any advancement. I for one am glad that a company such as Apple are willing to try and give alternatives to working environments and methods and advancing hardware technologies. I love the excitement of when one of their products is launched, good or bad. It's not just Apple either. I am looking forward to seeing the Microsoft Table. It's just their products come with a stigma attached as well.

They must be pretty confident that their draft version of 11n is going to be close to the ratification considering the amount of hardware they are sticking it in. Will it be just a firmware upgrade to the ratified version or will this all need to be re-purchased if there are significant changes? i.e issues with security or channel strengths etc.

You can still edit and create your movies on the go. You just wirelessly connect to a different machine (mac / PC) and burn it on that one instead. I assume you can use a blank disc in a shared drive and burn to it. Would be interesting if this was the case. Would an 11n sepcced wifi network be able to deliver the data quick enough?

I do value my sanity and would love to go down the road you mention. Unfortunately i have no more space to put another box, have no more boxes anyway and am using a Mac-mini to provide the service which is also hosting our shared itunes library as well as our software library server. I have managed to get cerberus installed before but i think it was a previous version. May go back to that one. I have tried renaming the extension to .so as per the php.ini instructions. As i say the extension is recognized in the phpinfo (mbstring enabled it says) but the mailparse is still not recognised as running.

Hello, I am trying to install Cerberus helpdesk 4 on os x client 10.4.11. I have downloaded and installed Entropy's PHP 5.2.4 package to install PHP and i have downloaded MySQL version 5.x for the DB backend. When it comes to installing Cerebrus you run a pre-install script and it comes up with: "Error! PHP must have the 'MailParse' extension enabled." I have enabled the mbstring.dll and it shows as enabled in phpinfo but yet the error still remains. Apparently there is an issue with compiling the mailparse but i am not sure if this issue still exists as i couldn't understand a word of it. All i know is it don't seem to work . Anyone have a complied mailparse for OS X intel that i could try? or a workaround i can understand? Failing that, is there a way i can download the mailparse and install (similar to apt-get) for OS X. I know that there is fink. I haven't looked there yet though. Thanks for any light you can shed on this one.

I read that the best way to port forward through two routers/firewalls is like so: External public facing (202.x.x.x) > internal public facing (10.x.x.x) > internal network (172.x.x.x). One of the smoothwall guys helped me to create the firewall rules on my school guardian as i was unsure as to the best way to set up the rules. I don't like firewall configuration much.

Well i have sorted out the problem at home. It ended up being a permissions problem on the root folder for the web pages. Chown -R www:www seem to resolve the problem. I have also sent the fax to RM about opening the ports and have yet to receive a reply.

i heard that leopard shouldn't need any of the messing about with kerb realms according to the guy i spoke to on the Apple stand at Bett. He said that as far as he knows leopard server is cleverer than tiger in the fact that it knows that it is already joined to a kerberos realm and so doesn't ask to be joined to another or something along those lines. I have also heard that 10.5 AD integration is somewhat broke in the Directory Util and an upgrade to 10.5.1 is needed. Have you experienced or seen any of these issues? At home i also set up a leo server and let the Dir Util to automatically configure the client only to find that the login window wouldn't let me log in. How have you faired with this? Just wondering...

Is it a permissions thing? If i recall correctly Office on mac needs admin rights the first time it is run? It has been a while since i deployed, removed and installed Neo Office

Check the ris is OK by using the Remote Installation services Setup Wizard and then use the check the server for errors option. This should then restart any services that may have failed and also authorize the server with the DHCP server

@ ICT Nut No wonder i couldn't find many freebies, you had them all. I honestly i don't really think the show is all about the freebies. Especially the bags they give you to lug them around in. God they killed my hands I thought some of the hardware was quite good. looking at the Hitachi stuff, you can see where IWB will get to with the advances in Multi-touch surfaces. I thought those were really good and the plasma with the multi touch surface. Any one had any experiences with the Hitachi boards?

my ISP is Virgin Media. I have hosted my own web server before. It was a nas drive with web service available. I configured a US Robotics to port forward to the nas drive fine. But this time with the extreme it isn't working like it should. I have tried to port forward to the nas drive and it failed. I also tried to port forward to my leopard server and it is still failing. I am going to try a factory reset now and see if it resolves the issue.

i used to use Censornet V3 and found it OK. There were a few issues with it though that i found made it a little unstable. I used the open source version. If i left it over the weekend i would most certainly have to restart it monday morning as it would not accept connections. I did all the updates but still happened. it may just be me though. I have since had a trial version of school guardian which in my opinion surpasses censornet and has a lot more configuration options. I use ntlm authentication at the moment so users don't need to authenticate after logon but they are still logged and filtered. I can't remember if this was in the censornet version i used. It also integrates quite nicely with AD. After trying both of them i think we will go with the school guardian. support is really good, actually its great. they have helped me out a lot and i haven't even purchased it yet.

So its been a busy day so far. Yesterday was port-forward hell for me. I had issues when at home as well I checked the school website from home last night and it now seems to be resolving back to the external server (LEAs) as it should now be. BUt got into school today and could not access them from inside our school. I spoke to RM and they said they would look into it. They have just got back to me saying that "the issue being DNS replication on their servers." I have just tried the site but still no go on the site from in school. I have also sent in a request for the ports to be opened on our router. I can then try to get the IP address working into our internal web server. The home issue was port forwarding on a 11n extreme router. I have set up a forward rule for port 25 which works fine but a port forward of 80 does not. Has anyone had any issues with an extreme port forwards or lack of them?

Sorry i haven't replied sooner. It definitely has been one of those days. I have managed to sort out the previous issue. I did a restore of the OD and it restored access to the WGM again. It was OS X server 10.4.11 i was working on. Apologies for such a vague post. I am now onto struggling with my School guardian. It won't let me connect via the web interface although i did it earlier on. Like i said one of those days. It doesn't help when i have no machines to test configs on...

Thanks for all your responses. I understand now what you were all getting at when saying "hosting your own DNS server". I just want to have the domain name pointing to our servers which seems to hosted by nominet. I think i see what is happening now. The nominet servers have the schools domain name registered but points to broadband sandwell's server for resolution. I think i need to speak to both RM and Broadband Sandwell to get that to resolve but first as you say i need to sort out the IP address resolution first. I need to speak to RM to open the ports if i understand you correctly? They give us our internet connection.

Well so far it's been a bad morning. The domain name still can't find my server and i don't know why, i have started having authentication issues with my users in the OD and now i think my dir admin account is knackered. Why do i think that? Well i tried to connect to the server to create a replica only to find that i had disabled SSH for security reasons whilst trying to sort the firewall out but when i tried to restart it it failed. I then managed to get it ticked and running i think but when i went to create the replica it failed to authenticate as the dir admin account. I went into WGM only to find that i can no longer change/ modify or delete or create any users in the lists. I can however authenticate OK to the LDAP/127 node. I tried a repair on disk permissions while logged in as root but no good. Anyone else ran into this before?

I got in this morning and ran the command and indeed it flushed the rules (ipfw -f flush) with sudo use. I also found that the dns entries had been editied so was the reason i couldn't connect locally. It may have been a mixture of both but the main reason would be the DNS. I don't remember changing the dns entry though

I cocked up me firewall. I gave access to all ports to the local ip range and now cannot connect to the server admin. Anyone know how to reset the damn thing? I cannot access any settings in the server admin? Any help would be great. Thanks. PS i found a ipfw -flush command. Does this do the trick? I have tried to remove the plist files in the ipfilter folder but that did not resolve the issue.

OK let me try to clarify. I will start from internal to external We have 4 servers. 2 AD and 2 OD. AD servers host the active directory but more importantly the DNS for internal network. The 1 OD server hosts the Web site and the Mail service. These point to a School guardian proxy which is also the gateway for the clients. On the external connection from the School Guardian proxy box (which also is a firewall) is a second router a BT one). This is the actual gateway to the internet. On the external side of the BT router is the RM proxy. Our school guardian proxy upstreams to the parent proxy to work. and the servers can bypass the school guardian to get to the rm one. I have set up the switches so that the clients cannot connect directly to the BT router so have to go through the School guardian. The gateway was set up like this when i arrived (apart from the local proxy box). I tried a port scan from an external site on the BT router which is in the 194.x.x.x range but the IP it cam back with was in the 202.x.x.x range which must be the RM cache box. The confusion i have is which IP do i point it at? the RM one or the BT Router one. I at first thought it must be the BT one since i need it to see that and forward the requests to the school guardian which would forward the requests to the correct server. But after the scan i was not sure since the ports all came back stealthed and not responding to anything with either a deny or accept. We are trying to host our own mail service and web site service so as we can gain more control internally for staff. The domain name registered with nominet is the school one which points to broadband sandwell's servers. The nameserver is what nominet call the server you want your domain name to point to i think, although the servers already listed did not give any IPs which i thought was strange. How would these work then? I know i need to point the domain name at our server but with the amount of firewalls and proxies in the way it is clouding what i think i should do. My setup should be made more straight forward i think (and i may just sort it out pretty soon ). Thanks for the replies and any more that can be given to make things a little clearer.

Hello. I hope everyone is well, I have posted before about looking to host our own services. Since then i have registered with nominet and have spoken to broadband sandwell that look after the boroughs systems. They have said i can take control of the services if i want to until we move over to the broadband sandwell network in 2009. I have looked at adding our nameserver into the nominet list but am now feeling a bit confused. The confusing part is this. I have added our servername (one holding mail) as the ns.domainname.com and have added the external gateway address to the name server. Is this correct? I have also been looking at sheilds up! and have seen that it scans a 202.x.x.x address which would be our external RM cache. All ports are stealthed. Is this going to cause me problems? I have a internal proxy with a firewall (schoolguardian) and also firewalls on the OS X servers themselves. I tried doing a lookup on the ns.domainname.com but came back with no details. Am i going about this the wrong way? First time setting up external connections with domain registrars. Closest i have come is dydns at home which seems to work fine. I also do not yet know if this IP address we are given on the external side is static. Could anybody shed some light on the best steps to take. Thanks.
