we are using an os x mail server as we purchased an xserve to do computer management so wish to utilise the software fully. Thanks for the reply though.

Hope everyone is OK now so close to crimbo. I have been looking into running our own mail server and have come a step closer today after looking into some info that Plexor gave me about nominet. I have got registration details and have logged in and checked the server registered with them. I spoke with the guys where the domain name points to and they say we can route the domain name to our servers. Now, thats all great but where do i put the mail server. inside the network or run it in the DMZ? At the moment the mail server is also an OD replica and so holds the passwords and stuff although it should be secure. What would be the best way to configure this so as it is secure and everyone is happy. I would like t to be set up well as Broadband Sandwell host them currently and said that as soon as we join their network then we will need to lose all our services as it will be a security risk. If we can make it secure now then we could possibly keep them in the future. Hope you guys can help me. Cheers

I've been using 1 airport extreme with 15 laptops using networked home accounts on both windows and OS X and so far not really had a problem with connection. I have had 6 laptops running network account under OS X while video editing on iMovie too and creating Garageband files. This did slow down a little so i was told but not yet checked it out myself. But overall pretty pleased with them. It is also part of the mobile classroom and i have a network splitter in each classroom to take the AP. Would like to run additional wiring to add sockets but at the moment not really worth it (we may be having a new school built soon). APs can also be managed from the server (OS X and windows) but the only downside is they can't run PoE although there is supposed the be an educational one that can. They can also create a WDS and run under b/g/n (draft) and a. They also have a kensington lock on them so can be secured. The WDS seems to be robust as well. I have a wireless bridge across a playground to the nursery and i use Remote Desktop to access them and manage them like that.

Thank you very much. Questions answered. I now know why EMI still plays a big part in networking environments. Obviously you adhere to the rules to avoid any issues, but it is nice to know why.

What changes with the new home mains networking? Surely you would see ac there with data flowing over it?

Why do people avoid mains cables? I'm not griping, but more enquiring. I would have thought there would be shed loads of EMI when running PoE or is this different?

I tend to recommend AVG free. You just go their website and download no messing about. I tend to use with defender anti spyware and windows firewall. For actual web usage though i just use a mac.

I don't own a credit card anymore since the last big bill I managed to rack up. I am also reluctant to purchase any thing on line at the moment as the fraud seems to be getting pretty rife at the moment. It seems that the security on some servers at the moment and the odd inland revenue cd out and about is a concern.

Where did you get passenger from. Did you purchase it through your school? I have been looking at where to purchase this app from for a while and our school does not have a credit card so i cannot purchase online. I need to find a UK reseller that accepts school orders.

look at the AD-OD integration paper on the AFP548 website. They have a script at the end that supposed to assign permissions to each home dir if i recall correctly. I have not used it though so cannot comment on how it works. I just now its there. It may be what you are looking for... Let me know how it goes as i have had to do this this past week. I only have 250 users so assigning the permissions manually wasn't so bad. It sounds like he has propagated the everyone read-only on the share-point.

This issue is still ongoing. We had our SMIS consultant out to have a look at it and he said that the issue is most likely to do with our internet connection being too slow. It is a 2mb ADSL connection from RM. He said that this connection from RM is probably the reason we cannot connect using Solus. Can anyone confirm this as i think this sounds a little far-fetched?

I also have the GPO disable the firewall but on occasions i could not ping the clients at all. For some unknown reason the firewall seemed to block everything. I could not get a group policy to come down and apply because of the firewall. I tried rsop and group policy results wizard from the DC and could not connect to the RPC. I then checked the firewall. I was sure that it had been disabled but it was on and stopping all connections. I could ping the server from the client but i couldn't ping the client. Disabling it resulted in GPOs being applied again.

Apple have recently updated their macbook range to use the new Intel processors i think. Have you run a report against the hardware to find out what it is exactly?

check your firewalls if they are on. I think if you cannot ping the clients then the firewall will most likely be on

You said you cleared out the OLD GC server. Does this mean you used the NTDSUtil to remove the left-over schema if the dcpromo had not been run before-hand. Replmon will give you who owns each of the FSMO roles.

Was the DC that was downed get re-installed or left off-line for a long period of time? Can't recall the length of time it needs to be off-line before the other DCs think it is down for good.

I had this problem a while back. I think it had something to do with the laptop either going into standby or the screen saver coming on and the board on the USB didn't seem to wake up. Not the best idea to have a laptop go into standby when teaching. But if a laptop is not plugged in i think the default is to screen save quite quickly.

Have promethean signed their drivers now then? Do they install like they should without having to specify the driver after the installation? I ask as i haven't supported a promethean board for over a year. To be honest i don't really miss them either. I found them to be a little troublesome. Software is good though.

I had an issue where the gigabit card (in one machine though) would not get GPO although it had done previously. I had to change it to 10/100mb instead even though it was running on a gigabit switch. I've not used ultrasound before. Does it do the same as replmon?

I will see if I can get the leopard file for the driver to check the install. Apparently the beta ends december 31st anyway so it looks like upgrading but at the moment I am reluctant. Maybe because I have got to upgrade the ram as well on all 40 machines.

is it realtek audio on the new macbooks then? I have looked at the tech specs but not much info on the chipsets used. Maybe an aieda32 (or something similar) report may shed more light...
