On etip though OS X should always verify the disc before an installation. Maybe you could check the disc in another machine to see if there is a problem with the disc. If so then you may be entitiled to an exchange.

To be fair, you can backup your install discs into a DMG and then if he had an issue with his disk, ie a slight scratch then he would need to burn his DMG to continue with his installation. I have found that superdrives can be very picky about the media in its hole. I have had discs spat back out at me because they have a minute scratch that would play fine in a windows machine.

What was the resolution? Could be useful for others that may run into the same problem.

Ok i've been back at work a bit now an d i think i can see the issues they were talking about. The users try to log in and sometimes it seems as though the login window just freezes. I have checked the caches on some of the users home dirs and all seems fine. Interent is quite sloow though and has since been migrated to a school guardian installed proxy acting as the gateway. Garageband is still working fine though. Which was my main concern as we have a visitor who comes in and teaches the kids music using the app.

Hello, I think i need a little help now. I have installed and run 40 macs (25 iMacs Intel, 15 Macbooks) in an AD integrated domain structure with an Xserver and XRAID at the heart of the OD side. I had problems running it like this and was also using local home dirs at the same time. The problems were that the Managed prefs were not getting to the clients although all the lookups seemed to be working fine. I have since upgraded the switch to a gigabit switch and moved the OS X domain to a stand-alone domain. I have named the Kerberos Realm to the same as the AD domains and have been told that i should not have done that. I would like to know what implications would be. I have looked into the cross-realm authentication but feel that the primary kids (of not the staff more so) would find it difficult to understand the need to keep switching domains. Where can i go from here. I would have preferred an AD-OD integration but had issues with the setup, such as not being able to automount home folders as i could not see the OD, and mail services were a bit problematic with authentication. Since then i have brought in my G5 from home and installed a second copy of Server to act as a replica. Would it be worth trying the AD-OD integration now i have a second server in the mix? How have many of you who have deployed macs into your schools dealt with the home dirs problem? I would like to get the XP clients to use the XRAID and osx home folders as well. I did this at home in a personal setup and all went fine. Just not here where there are more users at once. Kingswood kindly helped me along at the beginning but now i am wondering where i should go next. If anymore info is needed then please just ask. Hope you can help someone in need (again). Thanks

I think i gave a reasonable solution to your problem. You requested a free app to burn dmgs and i stated that Disk utility will do just that and it comes with the OS

You can use disk utility to burn dmg images.

Time machine is very good. My brother had to use it the other day and it saved his bacon.

I find the stability to be a lot better. Finder seems to be able to recover a lot quicker than tigers. Apparently mounted drives (not sure if its just network afp) are multi-threaded. How this changes things i don't know as i haven't tried connecting yet. I do like Leopard, but i also have found things to be slightly irritating. Like the cover flow. Really nice but you cannot right click on the actual icons in the cover flow window. You have to use the list underneath. I think this should have had a context menu option too. I have been using the server now since release at home (took me a little time to get DNS working right) and must say it is quick and very stable. I have yet to test it with leopard client but will do as soon as i am well. I am looking forward to using the recording feature of Automator. Could prove quite useful. I have also yet to test screen sharing feature. Someone mentioned the calendar service. I had a little play with configuring the service for users (i admit i did not RTFM) but could not get it to work. Anyone managed to get it up and running with a client? Re-connecting to an airport extreme wifi network seems quicker though.

So how do you run your accounts? I have just moved over to networked accounts and am currently off ill. But my missus works in the same place and apparently staff are moaning that the log in process is now getting slower. I obviously cannot confirm yet but am interested in finding out. If it does turn out to be the case. what would you suggest. I have started looking into a clear caches script for log out.

see this is the problem i. have i cannot start them and leave them since i have to start the xp partition going after the mac side has finished. If they take longer than expected it throws me out time-wise. I have been looking into multicasting and will probably look into it more soon. I only work term-time and only have the friday afternoon between 12-4pm for maintenance. I have to start the re-image process on last friday afternoon of the term. Give me 4 hours to re-image 40 machines twice and then re-join the both images to each domain and rename them beforehand. To make it worse some of the macs are running on 10-100mb (1gb hardware connected to 100mb switch) and so seems to slow down the whole process. These can take upto an hour to re-image, whereas the 1gb switch machines take around 15-20 minutes. connections. Nightmare. Mmm. that serial number thing is interesting. How do you audit your hardware then? I mean would still be eligible to use the old serial number? One of ARDs' key features is its ability to audit hardware. You could add internal assett numbers to the csv file as well i suppose for the ARD info boxes. As you can probably tell i haven't had the chance to really play with Net-restore at all. I have to create a master image (if any changes made since last one) and re-image entire ICT suite and laptops (40 in total) in one afternoon which incidentally is a dual boot environment. Having the ability to completely deploy both of these unattended would be a god send.

Have you tried setting up the direct connection to the ARD database which then allows the net-restore to pull the name direct from the ARD database? I tried setting this up and followed the relatively simple guidelines only to get an error on the postresql connection to the ARD db. If i used the mysql db connection instead all seemed to be ok. I would like to get this working. If youhave managed to set this previously i would be interested to know how you overcome this error, that is indeed if you encountered it. How do you populate the ARD info fields with serial number and such things? You can also get this directly in ARD in the column fields and also reports as well. I must admit the ARD tool is really pretty neat.

I use to bind to just the AD and manually create the OD authentication configuration and leave them unbound but have since moved away from that to trial other methods. I have moved to an OD only bind-required setup. The OD has the same kerberos realm as the AD and so far no problems. It even seems to authenticate across the AD with the users name and password (they are in both AD and OD as the same anyway) using kerberos. I moved away from AD as it seemed unreliable when pulling down the managed prefs for the computers. Some machines didn't pick them up. After binding to the OD i have found that this no longer happens. What post-restore script have you used? I tried to get the xp installation post-restore script to work but couldn't. I think i put it in the right place.

How does this work? Is the $ set by the computerid = 'scutil'. Is this the case when creating any .sh file when setting and using variables. I would like to get better at writing scripts. Any good sites you know of to get learning?

The CSS file is that of the Edugeek Joomla package which i have not modified. It works in over areas which is what is throwing me. I have tried to look at the code but can't work out what the problem is. Have i removed a div that is needed or even a table that should have been there. All i did was remove the content from the middle and then add mine and that is where the problem started.

Macbooks seem to be the ones that benefit the most. I installed on the Mrs and my brother installed on my moms and both seem to work really well.

If anyone has already created the custom .adm file would it be possible for it to be available to download. I admit i have not read that link (and to be honest don't really want to) so do not know if any tinkering is needed for each user. Apart from the search engines to be added. I assume the majority would just use Google anyway. I mean why duplicate workloads.
