I didn't know where to put this so i placed it here. I have tried to deploy some software to the pcs in the school via gp but it failed to deploy. I checked the group policy results wizrd in the group policy management console and i get a error stating that the clocks on the client and the server are skewed. But they are set to the same. I have run into this problem before but cannot recall what i did to resolve the issue. I think it has something to do with how Windows syncs with the OS X clock. Does anyone have any ideas. I have updated Boot camp drivers to the latest 1.3. Thanks

Right i have since looked at the problem with the index page and internet explorer 7. I opened the page in Dreamweaver CS3 and it asked me to convert the tags to ie7 compatible ones so i said yes (i backed up the index page first though) and now when viewed the flash content no longer works. the link seems broken. I have also changed the font size in the announcements box.

I see its quite a mess when viewed in ie7. What the hell is that browser doing??? The issue with the FF on may be resolved with a smaller font i will check it out. When i open the home page in dreamweaver cs3 it asks to convert some tags to be ie7 compliant. I will look into it to see what happens. Thanks for the feedback.

@ Beeswax, Yeah, the police station is nearly right next door currently, but still doesn't make it any quicker. I may remove that picture as i don't really like it much. What browser are you using to see that slight overlap on the announcements section? I do not see that at all in safari and i arrived at work this morning and checked on ie 6 and never saw it either. Do you get the javascript content warning? @mark, I will look at the padding as i thought the same. The text does get a little close. I think i did try to incease the padding but saw no change so left it as it was for the time being whilst content was created. The announcement font could be reduced and may also remove the issue being seen by beeswax. Thanks for the comments i will look into them as soon as i can.

Ok, I have finally managed to get a website uploaded using the template that SYSMAN_MK has provided edugeek utilising the static HTML pages that he kindly made for me. I also need some feedback on the site wehn viewed from IE 6 + and 7. I only have access to safari and firefox 2 at home so could not test on the MS browsers. I think the site is coming along quite well considering our limitations http://www.cronehills.sandwell.sch.uk any other feedback is very welcome. Font-size was increased as per request by secretary. There are random images on home page using Javascript and also javascript showing and hiding the div sections on the news page. Thanks

Sorry i mixed up 2 different conversations when i wrote this bit. I meant to point toward the following: We currently get email using the broadband sandwell email service but only online so when the internet is down, no mail. We have email and webmail currently working internally but no access to it from the outside world. I have looked at the static page that SYSMAN has made for me and i have attached how it looks so far. The smoothmove alternative is flash-based and rotates through 1 pic so far. I am having difficulties though with adding content as i am struggling with adding the CSS to manage each section. e.g the text in the announcement box tends to fall out the box and is slightly off-center. I have tried to combat it by trying to set padding properties to the cell and even trying to link CSS to the td but it refuses to budge. I have also tried inline styles but again nothing. i might be missing a very simple process to manage tables and table data using CSS but i don't know enough about it to get the right command. I have looked into divs inside the table to but not yet classes. It just seems a clunky way to do things. As i said i am a noob when it comes to web-design stuff in general. Not my forte as it were. Thanks for help and suggestions.

@SYSMAN, Yeah that would be great and its very good of you. I would like to be able to manage the layout using CSS (with the same layout of the current look) as well though if thats not too much trouble. The reason being is that i showed the edugeek template the boss and the secretary (who designed the original external site) and they liked it so much that nothing else will really do. It HAS to be that one. And i don't blame them. I thought about re-direction and may look into it as a viable solution but the problem then becomes working with a seperate ISP and while we are not part of the broadband sandwell network like the rest of the borough, when we move schools the plan is to be, which then raises another problem where the LEA will not allow us on their broadband connection when hosting our own services due to risk of being hacked.

Sorry about the delay. I was eating lunch. @SYSMAN The old default profile the one with the blue header. (eg_default) @plexer It is installed on our internal server (Xserve) and runs perfectly well. But the issue is that we already have a external website but our hoster will not allow us to run any MySQL DB on thier server (broadband Sandwell). The LEA also hold the domain name for our school and will not re-point the domain name to our servers ip. We also have no control over the firewall as we have a leased line from RM. So all in all to keep costs small, initially we would like to host a static site up on broadband sandwells server since we are having a new school built in a year anyway. We will then see what happens with regards to the webserver. The LEA were also reluctant to help as they have no information about what is to happen to their webservers as a switch of contracts to BT to manage their ICT infrastructure is in progress.

Just the default one. I would prefer the complete Joomla install but they are being soooo fussy about it all. Cheers for the fast response :-)

Hello Guys, Just a little question. I have run into a problem where the edugeek joomla package kindly released by SYSMAN installed well on my server but the LEA (broadband sandwell) have stated that i cannot run anything other than static content. what i mean by this is MySQL cannot be used as they will not install it, which Joomla requires to run. How can i still use the Edugeek package to build static pages (perhaps with a little flash to create the slideshow items) but without using Joomla? I have tried to re-create the pages editing the template CSS files and PHP files but to no avail. I will be the first to say that i am a complete noob when it comes to CSS and web in general. I have found a CSS layout doc that creates the three column CSS layout but i am stuck at getting the White background with the gradient fill behind it. If any one can help me re-create this template design without the need for Joomla and also MySQL then that would be ace. It has been such a PITA trying to get Joomla the go ahead with the LEA and their services. Many thanks in advance.

I was going to post this in a seperate thread but i thought this may be better since it is closely related. We have numerous posts about the backup process that people use but i would like to know how people resoter their DCs when they have a failure. I ask because as of yet i haven't had to but it is only a matter of time. I tried to do a ASR from NTbackup but i think i went wrong by removing the DC from the AD before bringing back online. I thought this was necessary since the machine was being re-built but apparently it isn't since it is using the same name. As this was the case when being brought back online it messed up the replication between servers and i then had two machines with the same name in the replication monitor even though i had removed the one. It was using its old GUID.

and thats what i am going to use to disable my dhcp service. It was my thread and the one i mentioned. It is most useful.

Hi, A quick question, Does anyone know if the default MySQL installation has already been secured, i.e. the root account and localhost account? Is there any other areas that need to be secured on the OS X Server version of MySQL before puttijng it into production? Trying to find any info is proving a little difiocult. All info pionts to the clients. I am setting up the web service for the Joomla install. Thanks in advance.

I had an issue with the DHCP service on a censornet box and still do. It is disabled in the setup but the service is still running when the box is restarted. It has happened a few times. One way of tracking is to see what ip your client has. Mine kept getting the DNS setting from the CN box which was the router IP. I think it was chrisH that told me to run the command /etc/init.d/dhcp stop. I am now in the process of removing this service from startup.

I hope someone can prove me wrong when it comes to samsungs' repair service because my experience has been Sh*t. I purchased a CLP-600N for £250.00 and promptly set it up. It was excellent for about 3 months then it all went horribly wrong. I now get complete megenta pages when i print and they continue way past the maount of pages printed. I quickly called samsung to come and help me out. They put me through to the Tech support who then proceeded to book me an engineer. I was told it would take upto 5 working days for him to arrive. Little did i know that he never would. 5 called the following Monday and rebooked another engineer. I did arrive 3 days after and he swapped out mainboard. It Hadn't resolved the problem so i called again and again they booked me an engineer. Once again he was to take 5 working days. He never arrived. So i call back the following Monday and ask where he is. They gave me the direct number for DigiCare. I called them and they said that he needed parts to arrive that were on order and they would be arriving in April around the 16th. This was the beginning of March. This was not acceptable since it is too long so i called back Tech Support and they said to speak to customer services. I did so and they said they understand my frustration but they were obligated to follow their Policy of having an Engineer visit at least three times before they could swap out the machine. They booked the engineer again and he arrived within three days, WITH his parts. he replaced the Fuser, PSU and Hight voltage board but still no good. I called PCWB (since this is where we purchased from) and they refused to deal with it as they only give 30 days with themselves. I then called Samsung again to rebook an engineer. Now in April he never arrived. I said i would give him two weeks (since it was Easter break) andif he never showed up i would be speaking to trading standards as they have breached their contract of time to repair. He never showed up. I called samsung to explain what i would be doing and they Then said they would replace the printer but it would take 14days. They would also need to collect the old one first. It is still here. I rang again today to find out why it was still here. They did not know why it was still there and have now said i should expect to see the replacement within the next few days. Why can they not juast replace the god damn printer with a new one. It ain't even worth the amount of cost in time for someone to come out and try to repair it 3 times? As i said though i hope someone can prove me wrong since i do like their products and their printers are really good. I have one at home and have never had an issue with it at all. We have also just purchased two colour lasres (the small footprint ones) networked for £175.00 for the laptop trolley and Nursery.

As posters have pointed out already PC World is for idiots. But if you know what you want and know enough about the goods you CAN get a bargain. I picked up a Dual 1.8Ghz Powermac and a 20 " cinema display for under £1100.00 This was before the Intel range came out and i zipped home first to do a bot of checking and found the same machine at the time was selling for £1500 for the powermac alone. I snapped it up. The screen was brand new and the machine still boxed also.

I didi this last year, except i used my own hardware. 1 DV camcorder 1 Firewire Cable 1 Macbook pro with 2GB RAM All i did was connect the Camcorder straight the the Macbook pro and captured the footage straight to HDD in iMovie. No lossed frames and audio synched perfectly. Once captured footage then edited but to a minimum as it cannot be edited for GCSE exam so i was told, and sent to iDVD for menu system. Created menu system and then burn DVD. In all took around 3 hours. I know its not the cheapest but is perhaps the easiest. I had DVD quality and full control over the whole process, with full access to editing the content and never had to record and re-capture the whole content afterwards saving lots of time. This i found was the real issue, time-saving as ours was late being entered (course-work). We also did the same on the day of the exam. Capture-wise i mean not late. We also never needed any DV tapes or additional software.

That sounds like just what i'm after. Thanks for the information. Joomla is sounding better and better each time i ask something about it.

The reasons for building on IIS were the ease of integration with ad for authentication. I have since changed my mind about the ease of integration as it seems that it can't even install IIS correclty in the first place. When i tried to install IIS and PHP it on Friday, it seemed to have completely buggered up my domain. Users logged in but failed to get any group policies applying and caused all sorts of services to fail. Upon uninstalling and restarting the DC all seems to be OK again now, apart from the slowness of logging in but i assume that is because it is authenticating against the DC across the Wi-Fi bridge. I have since decided to run Joomla on the OS X server instead (installed and configured on Macbook Pro in 10 minutes and running nicely) which brings me round nicely to the original OP question(ish). How would i enable LDAP queries to AD from Apache? I would like users to be able to authenticate using their won username and password, unless there is another way using Joomla itself. Can i slightly hijack this thread? The reason being is the OP has PHP installed and looks to be using the ISAPI extension filter thingy as opposed to the CGI on IIS. I am having major problems on installing PHP on my Windows 2003 box. I don't know why but i am. I have researched on the installation of PHP and all guides state the same methods, with slighty different ways of doing them, but upon following the guides i still end up with the same outcome. PHP pages will not parse. Sometimes i get a page not found error or unauthorised to see this page error. I have set this up before on a server around 3 years ago but cannot remember what i did to get it working. I followed a guide and it was fine IIRC. I have followed the same guide but nothing. I have downloaded the Windows binary version and also tried a manual install (Parallels helped wonders on this) but still no go. I have looked up the errors but nothing helps. I am running server 2003 standard with SP1 and trying to install PHP 5.2.2. I am looking to run Joomla and utilise Sysmans_Mks template (cuz its ace) but am stumbling at the first hurdle. I know i can do it but it just ain't happening at the moment. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

I hope to also shed some light onto this subject. If the learning curve is the main issue then let me tell my story. We are based in Sandwell and our closest CLC have mac suites and as part of this suite they have a side loaning agreement thing going on with their closest schools in their area. This means that they come to our school and let the kids get their hands on their macbooks. They are at the moment utilising the ilife suite. They have created some good work both in Garageband and in iMove. They have a half day on a tuseday every week and produce a finished piece at the end. One day they captured video of plays they acted out and editied them in the same time frame. I say all of this first to get (some sort of) WOW factor. These are Year 3 pupils and as the work rate, even from the lower productive students, was so good, this is the reason we purchased a new suite of macs. We migrated an old (and only) suite to imacs and dual boot. Thus giving the benefit of both platforms. Old machines didn't go to waste, instead replaced the aging and very infuriating (always problematic from day one i heard apparently) in the classrooms. I also have just been told that since we have our own mac suite now and that the pupils have done so well that the trial period has been extended and has also now been expanded to Years 4 and 5. Just thought i would mention the experience of macs from a primary school point of view to enlighten on the learning curve side of things. Implentation into a complete Windows infrastructure was pretty straight forward as well and so far so good. But as some have pointed out already, Its good to have options. If something breaks on one there's always an alternative.

The Xserve that is connected to the XRAID is configured as the directory host server as per the OD-AD integration paper (the one with the diagram in) and is only connected to the Active Directory. Because of this when you try and create shares and then try to make them network mount for home shares you have to authenticate. This is where the problem lies becasue you only have the Active directory connection available and it fails since it cannot write to the Schema. I thought about connecting it to the OD also (which currently is still a mac-mini) and configure the shares that way, but i would need to disconnect it from the OD afterwards and was unsure of the complications that this would bring and whether it would work since the Connection used to authenitcate the network mounting of the share would no longer be there. I cannot leave it conencted to the OD since when migrating one of the Mac-Minis to the Xserve we had an issue with the mail service (which was resolved ny updaing to 10.4.9) the engineer that installed the XRAID and Xserver tried to connect the Directory Host to the OD but it did not resolve the issue. This was before the updates were installed. Only after the updates were installed and the XServer connection to the OD was removed did the mail service start to work again. I may go with just connecting a 2nd XServe to the XRAID since if i understand correctly you cannot connect to the XRAID without one XServer being online anyway? You cannot connect directly to the RAID like you would a share on a server. I am trying to get storage with fault-tolerance but also may re-locate the profiles of the AD users onto the XRAID at the same time. As we have it now if the server hosting the profiles fails then no-one will get their profiles to log in. Has anyone done this? I am wondering how the security of NTFS comes into play since they will be hosted on an HFS formatted RAID and would be accessed over SMB and AFP protocols. Are permissions still set as they should be for windows users? Seems strange that there are still questions when we have already purchased the hardware, but i feel that it will still be utilised anyway so in the end not too bad an issue really. @Kingswood, What fibre switches was i looking at? I could only see the 3com one and some things that cost £39,000? I have seen a Net Gear ProSafe gigabit switch which also has an optional 4 fibre module slot. Could this do the job also? 24 port £264.99 +VAT
