So does this mean all the apps that have been deployed in schools via AD will now need to be re-created again just to use the new services and imaging technique? PS haven't read the link yet?

Does the wifi card have the the antennea connecte ddirectly to the card itself. If so check to see its direction of aim towards the wall at an angle remember that the walls seem alot thicker. I have had this problem with a US Robotics pci card and even purchased a new antenna to be able to place it on a desktop. Still no good though and strange thing was that the weather affected my signal. In the summer and late spring tiime i will be getting a signal in the extension during the winter however i will need to move the machine. (there is a radiator in the room) Windows is also very bad at signal strength detection. It can say it sees a wifi network and then not be able to connect because the strength is too low. Also check different channels.

This is really getting on my nerves now. There are some machines that log onto the domain in under around a minute and some still dawdle along taking their time. But i also have issues where the policys for some users doesn't apply at all. This is due to the users picking age old shares for their re-directed folders (such as dekstop) instead of the one specified. Some users are not picking up the shortcuts on the re-directed dekstop, as if the mapped drive to the apps hasn't been mapped. This results in some users having to re-log back in and if it takes the dawdle method, obviously they get annoyed. I have checked the DNS and cannot see any real problems and some machines log in fine so surely they would all be the same. I can't think of anything else that might be causing this problem. I have run GPO wizard to check the policies and no errors are called. The users are all in the same groups and as i said most pick up the correct settings and log in fine. PS the profiles are all mandatory yet some pick up old shares for re-direction as stated.

I currently work term-time +1 week but used to work full-time at my last place but i do miss the time to sort out problems as there isn't any time during term-time.

Well this seems to have resolved the problem. I re-created the shortcuts using a client machine and then placed these into the startup folder share on the server. I don't understand why this would be such an issue though as both on the server and the client the shortcuts point to the c drive? Is there some sort of additional information used when creating shortcuts?

Hello Each, A slight issue has appeared on my network. when users log in they get the loading your personal setting and then the applying your personal settings but then that dialog box disappears leaving them with a blank blue screen. It seems as though explorer just seems to forget to start. I have redirected the desktop and re-directed the folders my documents and the start memu. All pupils use the same mandatory profile but only on average of around 25 pupils log on at one time. I can't understand this issue as if you restart the machine it then logs on fine. This follows a problem where some pupils logged in and got the redirected desktop but failed to get all the shortcuts, although the policys were being applied successfully. I have only got one server one the domain at the moment and am wondering if this coould be the problem. The server shouldn't be stretched thoughas it is a brand new dual-core 3Ghz proliant ml150 g3. It has 1Gb or RAM as well as 3 HDDs one for each part of the operation e.g, profiles stored on one witha partition for the AD DB and a drive for the OS and also a drive for the apps. Any ideas on how to troubleshoto or even what would cause these drop-outs?

When i was at b'ham it use to take forever. It may have something to do with the proxy in between as i am now in w'brom on an RM line and don't have the same problem. Maybe you could see if any one else in your area has the same issue?

I see what you are saying Krisd32 and i immediatley thought the same. However as i said before in my veeeerrry long first post that the shortcuts are all pointing to the C Drive. However saying that if i recall correctly i may have used office installed on the original server 1 to create the shortcuts. I cannot down the server at the moment but i will post back the results.

When i navigate to the share holding the start menu it appears straight away as you would expect. I think i will re-create the shortcuts as you say and see what happens. I agree with what you are saying about the link with server 1, to the extent where i re-created the mandatory profile as there were remnants of the shared printer from server 1 in there as well even though i use Ric_'s? script found elsewhere on this forum that should delete the queues on log in. But this did not resolve the issue.

No one has any ideas as to the reason behind this problem? I have re-booted server 1 and the start menu pops up like it should again. I noticed though that when it does pop up (when server 1 is down) if you leave it for about 30 secs it then takes a long time to appear again. It's as if then menu is looking for server 1 but all thats on the programs list are office and the smart learning client that points to C Drive. The rest of the shortcuts are on the desktop which appears straight away. This has got me scratching my scalp right off.

Hello all, A problem has just raised its ugly head and i can't understand why. I had the start menu and other folders re-directed to lets call it server 1. Now this is an old server but serverd the shares well from an old 10GB SCSI drive. I have purchased a new proliant 150 3g server called server 2. I have now migrated all these shares over to the new server and store them on a 250 GB SATAII drive. I re-directed the folders to the new shares on the new server and all was fine. I decided to down the now redundant server 1 to make sure no problems were apparent, and now for some unknown reason the start menu when clicked on takes a long time to appear, at least 30 secs to a minute to appear when hovering over "programs". This did not happen on server two. I thought dns could possibly be the cause but the dns settings are the same as they come from server 3. I have checked the GPresults and all GPOs are applied and in the event viewer no errors are logged. I have checked the permissions but not really a problem as they are just read only for the share and security. I don't know what else could cause the problem but it happened immediately as soon as server 1 went down. Does the mandatory profile cache the server that distributes the re-directed folders?

Does the Powerbook G4 support two finger scrolling on its trackpad? The macbooks had it built into the trackpad as per the specs on release so it may be the reason why it doesn't work... PS have not checked the screenshots yet so it may be listed..

I just looked but i cannot see it mentioned. I want to edit the accessblility options though not just to have access to them. The way i wish to enable them is to create an OU for the pupils that need the accessibility options and place them in that OU and when they log in take on the main OU policy along with the accessbility GPO too. This should be possible.

Hello all, Where would i find the accessibility options for windows xp within the group policy objects? I have a few pupils that have some accessibility needs but i don't really want to edit the machine direct and affect all users that use it. Things such as larger font sizes and one click to open etc. I have looked but didn't see anything that can be set, unless i missed them. I find this quite strange if they are not included as i think these should be.

Maybe the msi others have used could be put up for download in the 'downloads' section?? I think the license allows distribution from your own site?

Hello, Thanks for the response. However i have checked, checked and checked agin the settings that you suggested above but still no go. I took my macbook pro into the Store and told them my problems. excellent service. They booked it in for repairs to replace the keyboard, display and charger and replaced them in 2 days. Pretty good i say, considering they had to order the parts in as well.

I have opened the msi file and found that the problems that plagued the previous versions have been resolved, i.e. the issue with the AppData folder variable as discussed on the appdeploy site. There does not seem to be any problems surrounding the flash player but i have not tried since it is already installed.

Hello all, I have the same problem as when deployed through software GPO the installation runs but when i look in the add/remove programs it is not visible and when i go to a site that requires shockwave it does not find or even load the plugin. All those that say it worked, did they edit the msi or any other "meddling"? What is the procedure they took and version number? mine i downloaded yesterday (version 10.1) and tried all day to get it to install but to no avail. I used some software to recompile the msi and it installed but still it did not run on the required site.

If i recall correctly you should get asked to press f6 at the point where the screen goes blue and just before it starts downloading stuff. I haven't used SCSI drives for ages and have never needed to use external drivers for sata drives. But if this is correct then i don't get asked for f6?? Could it be the intel drivers? in the manual for the laptop it is strange as it says to set the sata controller to compatible first then install windows. Once installed reset the sata controller back to ahci and then when windows starts it will find new hardware and then you install the intel drivers. If this is the case have i not just done that when ris'ing in the first place?

What really got my goat though is they went out of their way to manufacture a caddy that slots into the hole where the real caddies go which could of easily have been a caddy in itself and probably cost just as much to make.

Where do you get your HDDs from to fit in your proliants? I purchased my first ml150 g3 from pcwb for 449 and found that the HDDs need "special caddies to have the drives fitted. These seem a little expensive and a little pointless?

I have a problem that is similar to yours. I created an image of a Thinkpad laptop that has a SATA drive hanging off a ICH7 chipset. I thought the issue of downloading the image using ris would be OK once i got it to start (see my last post in the ris how do you do...it) but i was wrong. When sata is set to compatible in the BIOS it downloads the image but it fails to reboot. I have tried to add the drivers in to the mass storage drivers section in the ris sif but the machine fails to load th drivers for the sata. It brings up the error, there is a unexpected error (21) at line 21. I have looked at the instructions both in the driver download (which incidently is the intel storage manager) and on the microsoft website. I still get the same error however.

i installed censornet onto an old box and found it to be pretty simple (i'm not that great with linux, see the many threads...) to configure and run. It lets you pull the users from the ad and also scan the network for machines or import a dhcp file. There is the web-based system that lets you gather reports on usage and you can also restrict PCs or users in certain groups. All in all pretty good really, and authentication is through AD as well.
