There are quite a few switches, at least 3 since it is a seperate building from the servers, connected via a fibre link. All switches are hp 2512's apart from the switch in the cabinet in that room, 3com i think. I am not sure exactly as i did not implement them but should not exceed the maximum length. It was installed by a profesional company. when the RI has finished though the room is fine and works well. Dodgy cabling would surely affect this as well?

Does this restriction stretch to the domain admins as well? And does it reset after a period of time? I went back in to finish off the room later that afternoon. Although the DHCP still took a while it did eventually hand out an offer and booted the machines (4 in total). Then I came in this morning to find that the machines had finished the installation and went right through to sitting at the login prompt with no problems. One machine needed to be renamed as well (even though it had been pre-staged it was still picking up the wrong computername). I to think that it must be a network issue as the machines closer to the server have no problem and to be honest i had this problem before, but it was never this bad!!

Hello all, two problems really. I have just rebuilt my RIS and created a base install. It is just a member server so no DNS, DHCP, AD installed on this server. The base install has been created and an image resides in the reminst folder with the .sif file from the how to posted by Dos_Box. 24 machines in total need imaging... I start up 8 fine no problems, and then network boting fails on the rest, no response from DHCP. Why does this happen? any ideas? i think it might be timing out but others respond almost straight away... Eventually after about 10-15 minutes and constant reboots DHCP responds and I boot. I managed to get all machines booting and downloading the image (all the same). When it comes to the mini-setup the unattended kicks in but on some machiens it says the user cannot add the machine to the domain, and on some it says the domain is unavailable, and on some i got a BSOD, around 5-6 machines finished and logged into the domain OK and were sitting at the login prompt. Why do some fail and others finish OK when they are all the same machines and all us ethe same setup procedure? I don't know where to start first to resolve these issues? Any ideas anyone?

Did you finish the script to do this? I am looking for a pre-staging script that I can run to set our computers in their OUs to make all the machines managed. I can do it maunally one at a time through the properties but that could take some time.

No probs there is also a app that allows you to remotely listen to your iTunes library as well. I have not got round to setting this up so i don't know how good it is... Remote itunes Access This link should point you in the right direction. Have fun

Have you checked out CyTV yet? I have looked into this and it works very well indeed. quality ins't the best but if you play around with the settings you do get something viewable. Tried to get it set up in time for the world cup but didn't have enough time at the server end. CyTV I have mine running off the back of a Powermac G5 2Gb Ram, 64mb geforce 5200 (i think) so intel core duo should be good enough. It can also be used with win boxes too.

Hello all, I am currently setting up a build for RIS to distribute out to around 50 machines. One part of this is to set an environmental variable for the room so that con2prt can select the right print queue. Instead of imaging the machines and then editing the autoexec bat for each room, is there an easier way i can roll this out. I don't want to have to visit 50 PCs individually just to set the autoexec.bat. I was thinking of using the computername variable to do this in the autoexec but couldn't get it to work. The computernames are like roomname-1 in increments. If possible to do it from login scripts via GPO then would be great also. Thanks for any help in advance.

We have some 3com APs that you have just reminded me about. We purchased the D-Links as we needed so many. The 3coms cost around £210 and we purchased three. I might drag them out of the store room and see how they go... I will update firmware ASAP but they've got to get here first. Already i haven't received the email that was supposed to have arrived yesterday. The guy who came apparently deals with the public sector for D-Link on his own, around 45% of their trade?

OK next problem. When using the disc to copy the files for the base image on the RIS server it is throwing up an error saying "the system cannot find the path specified to D:\i386\svcpack\*". Any ideas? I've searched google on the error but brought up nothing.

Hello all. I said i would update the topic with the response i got from the D-Link consultant when he visited us so here goes. He did not even look at any of the APs around the school (just as well as they are in the suspended ceiling) but checked the settings on one in the ICT office. He said the wireless side of things seems fine and that he reckons its the ethernet side of things that are not working correctly. He is going to send some new WAPs (DWL-2100's) to see if these resolve the problem. We are now waiting for these to arrive.

We use sophos here but thanks for the warning. Will still tread carefully though as it is still AV software. I have tried to burn the xp to make a bootable disc (just in case i ned it elsewhere) but am experiencing problems. Before i slipstreamed the hotfixes i burned them OK. Have you experienced any problems burning a bootable disc. I've used the eldergeek and msfn guide but still failed. Just did my third and now bootable.

Oops. I didn't have any pictures imported. I have looked into mine and only have folders 2005 and 2006, which is what the pictures are. did you have any pictures imported that are stamped with that year? Seems to build the folder structure based on whats imported. If you can work out the albumdata xml file, seems to be where the info is stored with regards to the library. The roll information and album name is in there.

Yeah I've just downloaded the latest update pack and started the integration using the nLite. So it works well then? How often does he release the update packs?

How do you all roll out the latest updates using RIS? Do you just let them install automatically after installation finishes or do you rebuild images regularly? I have been looking at the nlite with the updates sliptreamed into it for the base image and then just updating that on a regular basis. Just wondering if there is a simpler way to maintain an up to date image with all the hotfixes installed.

Where is this data folder? What is the direct path?

That would be excellent if you could do that. I only have around six machines at the moment that need to be ghosted but a good backup procedure in case the RIS fails. I could create a ghost image of the ris images just in case.

@krisd32 It is just the one machine but there are others that will need doing eventually, and so i was looking to leave it on the ris server with all the other images. I am not ghost casting just imaging one at a time when needed. I will more than likely use the HDD for a temporary measure but would like to resolve this issue. I don't like it when things aren't working correctly. Thanks for the responses anyway.

Its funny you should ask as it did used to work, but when we were running an NT4 domain. The share resided on a W2k3 server but it was running under the NT4 domain and so would allow access. It may be what you say it is, SMB signing. I have not heard of this before. I don't control the security setings for the domains. Where would i find this setting?

Yeah it asks for a username, and i authenticate as the admin for the domain but it fails to authenticate and says i need to check the permissions on the network. I used domain\username and just username but still no difference.

Hello all, I have got an old pc that doesn't support Ris'ing and have created a ghost image of a similar machine and placed it up onto the server share ready. When I come to image the problem machine I cannot access the share. I start the networking services and go through the motions until I browse for the image. I select the server and it gives me an access is denied error. I then type in the direct link to the file and I get the error check your permisions on the network drive. I have given Everyone read only rights (both on security and sharing) to the root of the drive right down to the location of the image and have also added the machine as well to the permissions. Still it won't conenct. What am I doing wrong? It must be something simple. The server is 2k3 and machine is XPsp2, using Ghost 9 Thanks for any help.

Has anybody implemented it in a school environment? As a school we are looking towards open source and free software since budgets are shrinking and licensing costs are growing. Please post any good points / bad points about open-Xchange. Most obvious good point is its free. What reasons are there for implementing it over MS exchange?
