I have installed Vista using parallels. You need the latest version of Parallels to install RC1 as it will fail otherwise and also be aware that you won't get the aero features unless you can get the ati drivers installed. This as far as i can see is the same with the updated version released today. performance...not too bad really considering it is Windows.

What amount of RAM do you have? I run a simple parallel running WinXP sp2 and have no problems with it. I run it on a MBP with 2GB of RAM. I have also tried this on a Mac mini with 512 and the results arent really that great. I plan to upgrade the memory to 2GB also.

A wiki might be useful with all applescripts used made available for all none-programming peeps. maybe with screendumps??? It helps with any problems you may have run into along the way (although it doesn't sound like you had many:-) )

mmmm, now all i need is to find someone that is willing to take my dual 1.8ghz g5 off my hands (for a small but respectable cost) so i can replace it with this baby...

Just in case you all missed it but i doubt very much some how, Leopard vids have been posted up on the apple site. Time Machine looks good as do some of the other updated features.

Hello all, I don't suppose you have any Kayak xu 800 spares or parts that you do not require any more. I am using one to ttest configurations on and it is getting a little slow now. Could really do with a bit more speed. If anyone can help it would be excellent. Thanks in advance.

I set mine up the slow way. We did not have a RIS server at the time and all laptops aren't joined to the domain (the boss wanted it this way) so i set up one and configured the laptops locking them down locally using gpedit then created an image using ghost, then ghosted the other 15. I then set up the Netgear wgr614v5 router so as the connect straight to the internet through the gateway and each laptop having a static IP. Probably not the best way to do it though but it works.

Hello each, I am just in the middle of setting up a test bed for networking and server tests at home. I unfortunately have had to set it up in a room that does not have the first router in (Wireless router 1 we will call it). I need to connect wireless router 2 to wireless router 1 so the machines connected to network 2 can get out to the internet (probably so i can ask more questions here). Router 1 has DHCP enabled, but i will be messing about with DHCP on network 2 so do not want to break the working network (network 1). This will i think mean setting up different subnets. How do i go about getting the 2 routers to talk to each other wirelessly. I have tried setting up a static route between the 2 and pinging but did not get any response. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the replys. Well it sounds as though it is best to keep things simple. I like that idea. I will also try and see if it is feasible to carry out your idea Ric_ and find a central point for any wiring. As i said i have not looked at any of the network or ICT infrastructure yet so do not know what sort of condidtion the network is in or even if i would need to carry out any maintenance. I was looking at the future in case i would be implementing any additional ICT Suites. Once again thanks for your responses.

Hello each, I am about to change jobs into a primary school where i have just been placed in charge of the whole ICT infrastructure. This is the first time i have done anything like this and have obviously been doing a little research. Just a few questions though. What sort of network layout has been implemented in your schools? I have been reading about seperating collision domains and using switches with VLANs to reduce broadcast traffic. Is this going overboard. I have not yet seen how much ICT is in place so the network could be of any size. What are usually the best practices to follow in schools when laying out a network? I ask these questions as although they have a network, it may need to be upgraded. Thanks in advace for any advice.

The speed is ALMOST as good as but obviously not natve. Parallels use a standard chipset (945?) and bridged networking. You can set this to be a dhcp range also. Because the graphics are set as shared, you won't playing any hi-end games as such (doom 3 etc) But where it does come into its own is having 3 xp clients and linux client (limited support for hardware here) all running with a server 2003 running all at the same time on top of OS X and the native OS still doesnt slow down to a complete stop. and the VMs still run smooth too. Add Virtual desktops into the mix and you have an diiferent OS on each desktop at just the press of a few keys. I haven't had a chance to test the vm side of things thoroughly (plan to do that in the next few weeks) but when my brother used it for his Oracle DB (the one from his college) apparently it returned rows pretty fast and he was impressed.

Well it looks as though the price of the intel mac mini (dual core) has come down from the £599 to £529. Not a massive cut but enough to tempt people into thinking. If the trial version is still available i recommend a download as it works really well and as i say 5 OS all running at the same time on different desktops...excellent for testing configurations and server/XP deployments. Apparently Vista will be supported in next version as well, and at the moment only $50 PS i'm not a rep for them

So no one has purchased this software? I thought it would be top of the list as it is an excellent VM app. In conjunction with virtual desktops I have managed to get at least 5 OS's all running at the same time on 5 different desktops, and still no noticeable slow down on the host OS. I had fedora core 5, Server 2003, Debian, XP, OS X Tiger. My brother had 3 2003 Servers, two running oracle, and 2 XP clients This is on a MBP with 2GB ram. I should imagine you could do something similar with an Intel Mac mini. I have heard that the MS offering is slow. Would make the testbench a lot smaller

So how many of you mac owners now own this great little bit of software?

Is there anything that can view more than one pc at a time VNC like? and obviously the cheaper the better (free!). Whilst on this subject does anyone know if the apple remote desktop can do this for the pc VNCs' (long shot i know) as it is built on VNC anyway? I don't really want to spend £350 to find out i can't use it at work as i wouldn't use it anywhere else really (apart from home).

The actual imaging part is normal in speed when compared to running the imaging process in the same block as the servers and baring in mind 25 machines from one HDD witha partiton. Its just the PXE booting that is taking the time around 5 - 10 minutes and stil not getting a DHCP offer.

What version did you get? I tried a trial version a while ago and had problems trying to do a wireless synchronisation. This was using HP RX3715. The software would crash if i remember correctly.

Thanks for all the help. These forums are great for help... It sounds silly and probably very dangerous but we don't manage the switches here so i do not know what they are doing. How would i determine what the switches are doing in order to stop the STP or indeed helpl the STP prevent the broadcast storm? I'm just a hardware guy.
