Hello, I have just run into a problem with a HDD not being found. I then did a little googling to find that a similar issue was found on a dell when using a restore cd. It was down to the drive being a sata drive. Now the issue is that the laptop don't come with a floppy drive, but that does not matter. Apparently when the laptop comes with a sata drive, in the BIOS there is a setting that is set to ACHPI or something like that which seems to cause a problem with RIS as well. I set this to compatible and the RIS ran fine. This is on a new dual core IBM/Lenovo thinkpad R60e. Just something i ran into today.

Okay. It must have been the part where i choose the user who can use it since everything else was set already. Thanks for the link :-)

Hello, The answer must be on here somewhere but when i try to create mandatory profiles and then copy it to the server and deploy to a user, when the user logs on the profile is completey different to the one that i created before copying. What gives? I even tried renaming the .man back to .dat and using gpo to change the settings then renaming the .dat back to the .man. But this did not work as the gpo wasn't even applied. I'm not sure what is going on here but everywhere i read it says to just copy the profile to the server. Do you also use GPO to edit the profile? if so how since mine does not apply at all.

My apologies. Strange even though i read your name i still read it as plextor. Burn Baby Burn.

Wheyhey. I just managed to get it to run. Its pretty good software. i created a shortcut in the startup folder of the all users profile to point at the exe in the apps share and gave the security rights full control to that folder only and it works. The users cannot move the icons anymore. Perhaps not the best workaround but it will do for now... Thanks for pointing out the script location though plextor. Will look into it.

I suppose you are right, but the users are primary school kids and if its not in the same place then thay say they can't find it.

Hi ya all, I just need to do a simple thing like stop the icons moving around on the desktop as the pupils are currently sharing a re-directed desktop. But i can not do it. I am struggling to get it to work. How would one go about stopping pupils moving them around making a mess of the desktop? I found a little app called desklock which DOES do it (when physically run)and i tried to get it to run when logging in but it does not work. It has an error when looking at the classes. If this worked it would solve my problems. Any ideas anyone? As always thanks for any help. PS active desktop is enabled.

IS the GUID the same as the UUID. If not can i use the UUID to pre-satge clients for RIS? Never used it before if that is the case
-
I thought that windows itself would get the guids when joining the domain since if it did do that then all you would have to do would be to select "this computer is managed", and then choose your ri server. But that would be too easy i suppose. Looks like i will do as you suggested or just remove the option that says they need to be rep-staged (unknown client or something) then re-enable after completed. Thanks anyhow. I'm not that good at scripting at all. One of the things on my list of "To Learn.."

Hello, Nice to see it back up again (the site that is!). I was wondering if there was any easier/quicker way to obtain the GUIDs for pre-staging computers and in particular whether theres an alternative to enabling boot form network and then writing down the GUIDs. The reason being that one of my machines has a problem that when booting from the network it scrambles the screen so i cannot read the GUID. The display is fine as it has no problems any where else during the boot process and even in windows. I need to pre-stage for the ris today.

Anything to make it a little easier then

On the contrary. I always take your excellent advice on board as i do with everyones on this forum as the advice given is always of good quality. This is perhaps why i ask sooooo many questions as the answers are very helpful. I just hope that one day i can return the favour and maybe answer someone elses question. By the way i did actually run the command and stop the dhcp service anyway, just forgot to mention in my post, and i also tried to ping bbc.co.uk but it failed. I haven't tried since i got it working however. It could be interesting to see what happens... Once again thanks for your support as well as all the other folks on here.

Hello, I registered to download winInstall and upon downloading it ireceived an email from a guy that asked me if all went well and if i have any queries. I don't know if it has been mentioned on here (i didn't do a search  ) but he then replied with this message "Thanks for your mail. The area of MSI packaging is relatively complex however we are happy to offer you our support. To be honest the very best way that we can help you is to arrange for one of our consultants to run you through how to use WinINSTALL. We use a system called Webex so that you can dial into our system and you can see how to package and have any questions you have answered. All you need to attend is a web browser and a phone line for the conference call. It is a technical run through so will save you a lot of time getting familiar with how to use WinINSTALL. It is free of charge and we do this as it saves us a lot of time supporting potential customers and the feedback is always positive. Please let me know if you are happy to have a session and the best number to contact you on? I will then get one of the team to contact you to arrange a session." I thought that this was pretty good. I don't know about their software however as i downloaded it but never got a chance to look at it. I also haven't had the time to accept the offer of training. But it might be interesting for the people that do have the time and wish to know more about MSI packaging as there seem to be a few people that want to know just how to do it, me myself included!

I looked into how the server had been set up and it was configured so any DNS resolutions that could not be resolved were forwarded to the gateway. I used this to configure the second DNS server to do the same except send them to the censornet box and then configured the censornet box to use the router as the gateway and also set the Primary DNS on the censornet to the same ip as the gateway as well I also took an unused switch and connected the servers and the censornet server to this switch and the router connection, giving a direct connection to the gateway from the censornet as well as the server so everyone can access the internet at the moment whether they use the censornet or direct connection through the server. I have checked with the server disconnected and the users connecting through this have no connection and the censornet users do, so its working. Just some info for others if they are trying the same thing.

The DHCP service starts but is not enabled in the setup menu. The server holds the DHCP service. I have set up the DNS to use the DNS of the ISP and just nned to check it. I cannot remove the cable at the moment to connect it into the censornet box as pupils are online. I will get back with the results...

Is it not ctrl+shift and click by default? I haven't used it in a while.

OK. I have set up both the private and public ports to use lan ips and the server as the default gateway. The client has set the censornet ip as the proxy and the server as the default gateway and they can access the internet. Then why if censornet is configured the same way as the server the clients can't get the internet.
-
The DHCP setting is using the server ip as it is still running. I have configured a machine to use static ip using the censornet private ip as the gateway address. I have set up the censornet box to use the server as the primary DNS and the client is also using the server as the primary DNS. I have entered both private ip and public ip into the DNS entries, the public ip being in the reverse lookup. The machine is also set up to use the censornet private ip as the proxy server on port 8080 and it is also in the exceptions, as stated in the manual. It does also say to use ips from your lan on both the private and the public but this does not work either when using the censornet as the gateway.

i would like to pipe up to that effect as well

Hello, I have set up and configured the censornet server to connect to the adslcache and it is working great. Currently the main server is acting as the gateway to the internet through a BT router. I reconfigured the censornet to use a setup similar to that of the server i.e, ip range from lan on private and ip range from router on public. When i point the clients to use the new gateway it fails to connect to the internet (but users still need to log in which means the proxy is working). How can i get this to work? I will soon need to down the server which currently means no internet for everyone? Does anything else need to be set up?

Hello, Just wondering if anyone who is running this has experienced any problems? IS it similar to R2 release or any similarities i.e, GPO features etc I am downloading it now to install on my VMs and am looking for any heads up on some problems that i may encounter or other little interesting features.

Hello each, How can i remove the "synchronise" option under tools in windows explorer. Also i would like to remove the option is this windows legal under the help option in windows explorer also? I just want to remove any options that the pupils just won't need and perhaps any item that could cause a problem that may arise in the future, i.e. Microsoft may decide to release a new activex control to validate their copies of XP that could break their OS (wouldn't be the first time).

Hello all, I have been looking at restoring active directory through a non-authoratitive point and have run into a problem. I am testing this through 2 VMs in parallels on a MBP. I have backed up the system state and then down the primary DC after i have transferred the roles (i have not made the second DC a GC though) and re-installed Server 2003. Now i did not re-add the server to the domain as i read that it can be done on a stand-alone server on the technet site. So i continued to enter the directory restore mode and restored the system state, but when it asked to restart the machine all that happens is when the server should get to the server loading screen it just restarts. I have caught a glimpse of a blue screen once but it was so fast that i never got to read it. What could be the problem?
