I have just remembered both staff and pupils have restricted access to C drive via GPO. This i think could have a huge impact on their installation abilities.

I have only just found this reply as i was about to post again. I forgot i had asked the question already The default installation when you start the service in Server admin allows you to set the root password. It also allows you to either select allow network connections or not. I assume that if you run Joomla and MySQL on the same machine that there is no reason to allow network connections. When i install Joomla i also set it so that the user is localhost only as well. Is this correct or am i leaving my self wide open?

I don't think admin rights is the way to go with our staff ;-) One can't open a padlock on the laptop trolley even when the Combination is entered already.

Is there anyway SimS updates can be done without admin rights on the client side? I am only just starting out in the SIMS world of management and at the moment our clients need admin rights to update each client, which means i have to manually go around each staff machine and log in myself to do the updates? It may be something i have done to make it this way so i am open to any suggestions.

I like the idea of the macbook air as it forces you tochange the way you do things. It forces your way of thinking. If you can't store all your stuff on your machine then you can't lose it. If you have back to my mac installed then you can access it anywhere on the road as long as you have an internet connection available. I think it's just a little too early. Another year or so when everywhere has a wireless grid across the counties.

Hi, I just have a lonely old Mac-Mini running os x leopard server 10.5.2. It hosts dns services, print services, itunes shared library, web site and Download/upload site (although upload speed is s***e) and with parallels running Server 2003 Sp1 so i can see how best to break it well away from the perils of the work place. Airport extreme router hosts the dhcp and NAS drive (synology ds101) for a bit of storage.

There isn't anything wrong with it but i couldn't see a forum where you could give a list of great educational software. Probably because there isn't much around ;-) Anyway we purchased the library software a while ago and while we still haven't actually used it yet (there's a few items in there from me) i must say that the support is superb. The main head quarters are based in New Zealand and as a result (i'm quoting-ish the guys from access-it now) this means that while we sleep they work on the issue. I was a bit dubious to how this would work at first but i must admit i am more than impressed. In the time we have had this software we have needed to migrate the DB over twice now. I had it initially installed on a Windows-based server (2003) but wanted to move it over to the Mac server which meant that we needed the DB migrated to OS X 10.4. One quick email to Support told me that i would need to upload the Db to them to migrate the Db (thanks Lianna) and so i followed the emailed URl and did just that. The DAY after i had an email telling me that the DB was available to download. To my surprise that had included the DB in with the installation file and so all i had to do was install. No messing about editing files or anything. The second time i decided i was going to upgrade Tiger to Leopard. Since there were so many changes Firebird needed updating which required the DB to need updating too. Again i spoke to support who stated to upload the DB. This time the following day all i had to do was copy and paste the new Db into the same data location on the server and run a permissions change command on the file and it worked straight away. So what i am saying is that support is quick and concise and if no solution is found then it is quickly escalated and a solution is found. I have never had to wait longer than 3 days from problem to solution. Well done Access-it Software and keep it up. Thats been my experience anyway.:-)

Whats the point of getting a VLE into school when i assume the ultimate goal is to integrate into your pupil DB. If all of this has not been sorted out yet then why the deadline (which is what i have been told) i think is 2009/10 for all schools to have a VLE?

No they don't have to be chipped. There is a software hack that uses an exploit found in the fonts. So when you use something that uses the fonts or something it then runs arbitrary code and then launches Linux that installs an alternative dashboard. This can be exploited by running a Splinter Cell saved game which has been modified slightly so when executed runs alternative code instead. You do not need to open your Xbox and the latest installs can usually be rolled back as well. It's been a while since i did mine so a lot might have changed since. The DVD drive also changed in each revision to the Xbox so you may be able to find a better drive. Some wouldn't read certain type of media. CD-RW's mainly. PS you will also need the ORIGINAL splinter cell not the platinum (or xbox equivalent) as it was most probably patched on this revision of the game. Emulators: Great SNES emu, and PSone emu. If you have the old games and the software to create the ISOs from them then you just upload the ISO to the right folder (using FTP) and run the emu. and the Amiga Emu as well.

I think the only reason you would need to go to Mac Pros is either a display larger than the maximum 24" iMac and also additional HDDs giving more than 1TB in space. Other than that i can't really see any reason to move across to the Mac Pros from the iMac range. Remember if you don't already have decent sized displays to hand you will also need to grab some on top of the Mac Pros which will increase the price as even further. Plus the iMacs could save you space without the need to have a box on the floor. I don't know how noisy the Mac Pros are but if they are any where near the noise of the G5s then i would definitely go for the iMac range. The Laptop range is also a option but the graphics cards on the Macbooks may not be up to the HD job. I don't know the answer to that as i ain't got any HD footage to edit and make the machine work hard. May be the Macbook pro but then you are into iMac price territory. Plus the iMac are a little more difficult to nick as i had my Macbook pro stolen last year.

You need to use the squirrelmail config to set up the ldap address book. I haven't managed to get it to work yet though.

I would go for top end imacs with 4gb ram inside :-) Get some HD camcorders for mobile filming. If they are to export the finished results you may need a DVD burner where the low-end educational versions only come with a CD-RW and DVD reader.

I am just trying this site. If it works well it could be useful even in school as we connect to You Tube through their server. The only problem i have at the moment though is how long does it ususally take? I have sat here waiting around 5 -10 minutes and still have a spinning cog with Connecting to server... Is this also downloading the vid as well as connecting or is it just not working? I have tried with both firefox and safari and so far nothing. PS This is the URL i have been given http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id-75zlTAxo&feature=related I don't know if it works or not as it is blocked and i haven't checked it at home.

I downloaded this yesterday and found that this too would not play the file. Quicktime just says that it is not a movie file. I am coming closer to the conclusion that the file is fudged like Geoff said.

I am using VLC Player on OS X. Would this make a difference?

What settings are needed to do this? I tried but i got the error ffmpeg: av_open_input_stream failed Is there a specific setting that needs to be turned on?

Hello, I have been asked numerous times in the last few days by different staff asking to use You Tube for lessons. Unfortunately here it is blocked by RM so we cannot access it. I have tried to download a sample flv file from an unblocked site using Firefox and Video downloadhelper. I have now got a .flv file that nothing seems to be able to open. What can i use to open the software. I have tried VLC Player and get this error: ffmpeg: av_open_input_stream failed Hope you can help. Thanks.

If you are installing the drivers manually then you need to be sure that you are installing the correct ones, although i think it won't install the drivers from a package as Windows will say that it don't match the hardware but you can still specify anyway. The bootcamp CD contains drivers for ALL Mac hardware not just the ones for the machine that it was made with as far as i am aware

I was told that apple flash the hdd firmware with their own which is why they no longer sell the caddys. They did for the G5 Xserves but not for the Intel ones. Just what someone told me

I use Hesk It does what i need to do although it doesn't have any bells or whistles. But it does seem quick and was even quicker to set up. It does automated (fully customisable) canned responses and personally i think it is clean and simple. Just the way i like things really.

Hello all, Hope you are having good day. I have ben trying for the last few weeks (not constantly) to get NetRestore v3.4.4 to create an image of my leopard 10.5.2 ready to deploy through NetBoot. I have so far managed to get to the point where it says closing disk image (or dmg) and it then stays like this for around an hour or two before i eventually get sick and tired of seeing the message and click abort. This then leaves the image useless. It won't mount and Disk Utility says the same. So how have others faired and if somewhat better what version are they using of netrestore? Hope i can sort this out quick as OfStead are in Monday and i could do with deploying the image soon. TIA. Has anyone got a leopard 10.5.2 client that they could test the newest netrestore to see if you have the same issue with it failing to close the dmg? I am clutching at straws a little now as i don't really want to manually rebuild each machine. I have 10 to do. May not sound like many but it is when you have two OSes and all the apps to install (some come from the server others don't). The apple side isn't so bad as i can just use ARD to deploy all the stuff and configs but the XP side is going to be the killer.

Do you mean hardware or software? If hardware then if the Mac pro Spec is the same as the G5 IIRC the G5 has an optical connection so could go straight into a 5.1 srround system. I remember vaguely that i had purchased a toslink splitter from Maplins and split my PC 5.1 toslink connection, G5 connection and DVD to go into my Sony 5.1 Surround Sound amp system.

if I recall correctly you can still play your games with xbmc. To do online play you download xlink kai and use that instead. The best part about this was you could also play nodded halo too.
