I think it was more to help stop the homebrew folks hackin the crap out of the machine. With the ps3's hdd easily upgradable in size you should be able to stick Linux on a decent sized space. What you can do with it afterwards though I don't know.

Thanks for the replies. I will look into them tomorrow as I am at home now. I think I will look at the simsperm bat first as I don't really want to add the users to the local admins groups as the least rights the users have the better as they sometimes let the pupils use the machines when the staff are logged in themselves.

I had a quick look at the simsperm.bat but wasn't sure how /what it did. The last line was user/domain. Do I need to specify the actual user names or just the user group or am I missing it entirely.

Hi all, This may have been asked before so sorry if it has. I need to add users to the local power users group during login (script if poss) so the staff can update their installed copy of SIMS.net. I have been informed that this is the best method as it will be less problematic in the future. How could i accomplish this with a straight forward script as i installed the update on the server and came in this morning (late as car broke down) and found no one could do the reg. I don't want to go around and update one at a time again like the last one. Hope you can help. Thanks.

But you can put Linux on the PS3 I read somewhere that Sony has a Linux dev for the PS3. Yellowdog i think it was and the PS 3 fully supports it. I never read about it in-depth as i will probably never own a PS3.

I tried but never really got it to work but it doesn't mean that it won't work. I ain't exactly hot on Linux anyhow. The linux is a command line version but i think you can install a fully fledged linux distro if you know how. It's been a while since i have done one so it's all a bit vague now.

I will be looking to get the Profiles and other shares (except the Apps) onto our XRAID at some point. That should speed up the disk access a little. We have a new server arriving shortly so i will be looking to migrate the server 2003 over to 2003 R2 to see if it helps any. I will also be looking at the total amount of RAm that we have in there but we have ordered 2 so it may be able to get a secondary DC on the go to ease the strain a little. The new servers have 2 network sockets and so hopefully i can get the NICs joined and working together. I have purchased the Switches to do this already as i was going to do the same on the Xserves. Just need to work out the best way to do this. Anyone know how to configure link aggregation on a Linksys SRW2048?

I try to leave the server as long as possible before restarts but it has been rebooted in the last 2 weeks and yet still seems quite slow. The server is the only DC in the forest which has DHCP, DNS, AD, SAV (Symantec), App server, User homes, User shares, print server and RIS. Nothing else springs to mind at the moment. I have a second member server that runs the SIMS. net backend and also hosts a secondary DNS. The Server specs are Intel Xeon 3.0 Ghz Quad core with 2GB RAM. and 1Gb network connection. @Bizzel Reboot (check) Realtime AV (will Check) Ensure DNS Scavanging is enabled (Check, no re-fresh 3 days, refresh 4 days) Search for User accounts (will Check) Run Disk Cleanup (wil Check) Run Full Check Disk (will Check) Defrag (will Check, i meant to do this over the last half term actually) Roaming Profiles (Half-Check, use mandatory and staff roaming). Give full Virus scan (will Check) Unneeded features (will Check) Remove old Unneeded GPOs (will Check) Thanks for the extensive list of checks. Will do each one and monitor the server.:-)

Hello, after reading through this: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2008/17259-any-problems-server-2008-a.html t prompted me to start this thread. My windows domain was rebuilt last year and everything re-installed. When it was fresh it was zippy as hell and the clients too. But nearly a year on and it all seems very trudgy now. Networked apps seem slow. Users logging on seems slow. A few things have changed since then but nothing major. It isn't really under a lot of stress from users. They mainly use the internet but saying that it is the only DC for 50-60 machines maximum. Any ideas what could cause this slow down over such a short period. What could i do to resolve it?

Hi, I have a leopard Server which has been set up for IMAP mail accounts. The Staff have their mail clients configured to connect to the Leopard Server who also have mobile accounts set up on their Leopard 10.5.2 mac minis. The problem though is when they log into their minis they access their mail fine but when they log into the ICT Suite which has networked accounts set up on them, their mail settings are not there. It asks them to reconfigure their accounts. Is this normal?

Does it matter what kind of article type you choose for the page you want the menu to appear on. For example i chose just a standard article page as i was not sure as to which it should be from the multitude of options just to create a page for content. It is good. It just seems that sometimes to create a simple thing takes a fair amount of effort. I suppose that it all depends on whether you have it all set up ready. Anyway i did what you suggested which was not the way i originally did it and it still did not show but i did end up with 2 PupilMenu's in my module list. :-) Maybe we could do with some Video tuts on how to do the basics.

Good Evening, I am currently looking at Joomla again. I am having a meeting soon to discuss the potential of being able to host our website using Joomla so i have been playing to see how it works. There are two areas (for now) which i am not quite getting. The first is how to hyperlink in the inline editor to other pages on your site eg, if i want a call us link to the contacts page in an article how would i do it? The second is i am trying to set up a menu system similar to the one under the curriuclum pages on the right, except for pupils. I have created the section Pupils and then created a cateogory called pupils area and then created an article called welcome to pupil area. I then created a link to the pupil area on the main menu. aI have created the pupilmenu under the menu manager and enabled it in the module manager. But this is where i get confused as it still doesn't seem to display on the page. What else do i need to do?

I have re-downloaded the package and have now installed it. It does seem to be a bit quicker at returning the requested pages than the 1.1.1 version. Thanks for your prompt response and fix alonebfg. I would give you a thumb but for some unknown reason when i click it nothing seems to happen. Most appreciated.

Sorry i actually meant to point that towards the OP as it may have been something that he forgot to factor in when upgrading server versions. I know i always do But does it matter at what domain level you run at (or have i misunderstood) since if your clients connect to the server 08 for anything then they will need the updated CALs. That is how understand the way CALs work. If i am wrong then please enlighten me as it may save me some cash.

OK Thanks. I will give it a shot. I also tried to download the Joomla package though from their site 1.5.3 and also had installation problems with that. That's the one that failed to create the config.php file. So it may be more to do with either my install or Leopard 10.5.3.

That would be great. I was mostly interested in how the wifi planning part went. Apparently you can input a plan of your school and it will pin point the ideal locations and amount of APs that you would need for complete seamless wifi roaming coverage. If you could let me know how you get on with this part it would be great. I don't think theres anything worse than deploying a 100% WIFI coverage. In my experience it was an absolute nightmare.

Hello all, I have just been trying to get the Joomla 1.5 Edugeek package installed to check out the differences between the 1.1.1 and the 1.5. i tried the installation of 1.5 first on my Mac mini running Leopard Server 10.5.3. I ran into a problem where the installation raised an error. (See attached picture). I checked the permissions and php configs but nothing seemed wrong. I then proceeded to install the 1.1.1 package to check if this too had errors during install. This one went flawlessly. I then used the same settings as this one except changed the Db prefix. It still failed. I decided to try and download the default joomla package from their website v1.5.3. The installation got right to the end where it should tell you to delete the installation folder but instead i get a blank page. I went ahead and deleted it anyway only to find that when i refreshed the config.php was missing. So it looked like it hadn't created it when i clicked on next to finish the install. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced any issues when installing Joomla 1.5 /1.5.3?

what size classes do you have there? we are a primary school and have some classes in the region of 30-35. We have a make-shift ICT Suite with just enough room to squeeze 25 machines in and we have a mobile laptop trolley with 15 in. So in ICT lessons once a week for each class we struggle to give a machine to each child let alone throughout the whole day.

Don't you have to upgrade your CAL licenses to connect to the new 2008 server? IIRC it was mentioned to me when i was looking at 2003 R2. I reconfirmed on here and someone pointed out to me that this was not the case. But i think i read somewhere that with newer releases of server editions that you do. I may be wrong though as i usually am Just found this... 2008 licensing

I use Samsung colour Laser printers at the moment. The cost of Toners is around the 50-60 quid area but the machines still print even though the machine says the toner needs replacing. I had a CLP-500 at home and i had run out of Cyan and Magenta and low on yellow IIRC and it still printed. The only colour printing will halt on is Black. I think this is great as it can get you out of a tight spot sometimes especially at the end of the financial year when your budget has been spent replacing toners after 300 pages of utter garbage has been printed. I am now looking to try and reduce printed documentation wherever i can. Starting with scan to email with pdf conversion at the same time. Since most will end up on the VLE anyway soon.
