I had a look on their site but couldn't find much information out about which version of linux is best suited to that pykota system. What would i need to do in order to get a linux based print server talking to mac clients. Plus how does the Pykota do its print control? Does it pull the users in from the AD? Sorry for all the questions but need as much information as possible to start the build process.

is there a section on how to build this Linux-based server with Pykota on here? Its definitely something I'm interested in as we are looking at print monitoring/control now anyway? Any possibility of getting an parallels image build of your server which can be changed to suit our environment. I'm not that great on Linux you see

Hello folks, I have just started going down the AD-OD integration path again. So far so good. I have the users authenticating from the AD and have the Users profiles on the OD server mounting over AFP. The issue i have now though (and did with Tiger as well) is the Printing to the AD queues. I can print to them if i authenticate but i thought it was supposed to be kerberised. I have looked at the enable kerberos authentication in the cups but it still requests authentication for the queue. Am i missing something...again?

Just to let folks know (if they don't already) that bombich has updated Net-Restore to 3.4.5. The biggest change is that there is now an option to select dual deployment in the GUI when configuring the NetRestore part of the operation. This is how it works. You tick a box and then choose the XP image to be deployed after the OS X image. There is also a slider to choose the size of the partitions on the drive. It is much easier to work with like this than the scripts. I never got the scripts to work so it must be straight forward if i can do it. Had a few issues with the XP image deploying though. Also i found that if you use Boot camp to create an equal partitioned drive and then set the slider in Net-Restore to be equal to the sizes are slightly different and so the XP image cannot deploy as the size is too small. Well thats what it seemed like anyway.

After reading a couple of the posts i think i understand what you wish to do. I did something similar using a Jet Direct box to create the Ip address and then used a wireless device that was transparent to the connection. What i mean by that is that you connected straight to the ip on the jet direct rather than through the ip of the wireless device. It was a US Robotics device. But i think whatever wireless method you use, you will need to ensure that it is solid. Why? Because coupling Printing issues (which are a nightmare on their own) with the perils of wireless could result in a serious headache. But thats my opinion based on past experiences with wireless and printers combined.

Why would they want to change the extension of a profile when they have been the same for how long?

Hi all, I got some Mac minis that are to be used as the classroom pcs. I have deployed OS X and XP to the machines and found a couple had an issue displaying the image when starting up and thereafter. Now the problem i have found is this... When i start up the mini without a display connected and hold down alt to get the boot selection, if i connect a display to the machine, os x then detects the display and boots fine with the display being all good to go through the splitters we currently have. However XP does not do this. If i connect a monitor directly to the machine and start it up then screen can be seen and when i switch from the monitor to the splitter connection the screen is fine but restart with the splitter connected and the display disappears again. I have narrowed it down to being the video splitter. Now how do i know which video splitters to buy that will work with the setup we have. I have found that 2 out of the three we have work, but are no longer available. TIA

Can you not get a network socket splitter if the problem is RJ45 sockets? I would rather go that way than mess about with the hell that is wireless connectivity, especially if you are looking to use the 2100 aps

But to image to a drive across a network does not mean they are part of the network as in using network-based accounts. You can image workgroup machines using ghost and restore a workgroup-based image all from a network share or am i missing something. Someone mentioned a single switch a doing it that way. If you were gonna do that then you may as well just patch it back to the main switches and get the image from the server. Unless they are looking at bandwidth usage, or ip address usage from the dhcp or not wanting dns records added? The way i read it was that they were not to be joined to the network for account access.

I now use net-restore coupled together with Netboot where the images and net-install set are located on a XRAID with a 4Gb fibre channel connection to the server and the server with a 1Gb connection to the network as are all the clients. Takes about 15 minutes to re-image both OS X and XP partitions. All i got to do now is aggregate the link to the network on the server and it should be a little quicker. I have only got around 10 machines to do like this though at the moment although i will soon be rolling it out to another 40 machines. I prefer the network method over DVDs / HDDs especially if you want to have more than one going at the same time.

It is indeed access-it. The issue isn't so important at the moment but we may move the service over to an external connecting server. With a library.school.sch.uk domain name for users to connect could we get the public facing router to re-route the traffic from that domain name to port 2000. I think this would be the best solution if possible.

The software runs its own web server which is a jetty web server hence the port 2000 usage. I tried to get apache to forward request for a domain name onto port 2000 but it failed as i assume it would look for the port number itself. A long shot and missed by a mile. I have just re-read the srv description and for the life of me do not know why i thought it would work. But when you try to create an SRV record you get the option to choose the type of service the protocol for the service and the port the service uses. I thought that this would work because of this. oh well... I'll Keep trying :-)

Can you not stick the image onto a network share, insert the ghost DVD and then point the disk to the image on the share to restore?

We are at the stage of toilet training now. He is going great. Has a few accidents now and then but in the whole he's doing fine. I remember when he started to walk and i was at my old man's house and my nephews were there. I was busy doing something and Jake (my son) was next to me but my nephew left the gate open and he sneeked out, up the stairs and no-one even saw him go. He fell from the top from the sounds of the bumps going down. Scared me sh*tless that did. So a word of caution: You will need to keep a veeeeeery close eye on him now.

Hello, I am still having huge amounts of difficulty doing what was once a simple-ish task. I managed to create my Tiger/XP Images in a couple of days and deployed them in 1 day. Leopard is proving to be somewhat of a git to do. I am now onto NetRestore 3.4.5 and have now managed to create a Leopard Image 10.5.3. I have created the XP sp3 image as well. But now i can't restore. I have tried to set up a dual-deployment where the OS X image is deployed and then so to is XP straight after. NetRestore has changed so you can now configure this in the GUI. I have as far as i am aware done this correctly. The Machines boot from a NetInstall set and then the disk gets partitioned. It then proceeds to restore the Leopard Partition. This is all fine, but when it gets to the XP restore it then fails. At first i got a Failed to extract MBR error. I tried to do what the guy said in the link but i am not sure i fully understood what he meant. I created a applescript app and after NetRestore had partitioned the drive and started the OS X restore, i opened terminal and ran the app to copy the file into the Windows partition. This got passed that error, only to present me with another immediately after which was expected post action. It should be fine but i am unsure as to what post action it is reffering to. Any Ideas or has anyone managed to do a leopard and XP restore using an earlier verison. If so what version did you use? Thanks in advance for any help. PS Sorry for the long post.

They need to sort out their licensing fast. Since i go with what i am told by our resellers we may be breaching terms of licensing agreements. I started at my school a year or two ago and am still trying to sort out the mess or licensing but only the Microsoft side of things. My OS X side is relatively simple. We have a Select Agreement license (from where i do not know) a Volume License Agreement (from MJC although i am not sure if it is ours or not and whether we purchased it from them or they just used the Volume License agreement to RIS the machines before installation. I have asked clarification but still waiting. I don't know if the Licenses for the machines were OEM and if not then i think we can move the licenses to a different machine under the Volume License agreement. It just gets greyer and greyer...Hacks me off. I reckon we should be allowed the excuse "If microsft don't know, how the hell am i suppose to!" when the auditors or whoever come in. Thats it i think. Rant over.

I think he used internet Explorer typed in the servers address and it resolved to the port number automatically IIRC. I just wished the i saw what he did. Thanks anyway.

A guy came in to install and configure our library software and as part of the configuration he set up a dns entry for the domain name to go the the webserver but also on a specific port number. I think he did this as part of the DNS entry on our Server 2003 box. Unfortunately i was called to turn a plug on or something at the time (which was apparently really urgent) and so missed what he actually did. Am i right that this can be done at the DNS console or am i being stoopid. I tried looking for a DNS record that maybe did what i thought i needed but it failed miserably. I think i tried the SRV record.

Thanks. Thats good to hear. I would upgrade the bundled app with a purchase although i was slightly disappointed to find that comic life and the big bang board games were not part of the leopard installation.

Hi all, A quick question with regards to licensing. Not too sure if this would be considered as wrong. We purchased a room of imacs and they obviously came with the bundled ilife 06 and comic life. We are looking to upgrade the machines to leopard soon as was wondering if we would be breaking licensing agreements on these bundled apps. I think not as the machine it came with is still the same machine but the OS they install on has been upgraded. What would your point of view be?

If it Leopard then the F9 key is mapped to spaces. You could just change this mapped key to something else in the system preferences or you could just turn it off completely.

So it took me a while to sort it out but i think i finally have SIMS updating itself when users log in. I followed the above guide and linked the Policy to the Computer OU and it worked. Yey. At first i tried to link the SIMSSecurity Policy to the Users OU to see if that worked but it did not. I thought it may be how i was applying the permissions at first so played with them. In the end i left them all at the first setting "apply permissions to inheritable files/folders. I think thats what its called. This still did not work. I tried to enter the Registry key manually but could not click OK. You can't enter what is exactly written. You have to navigate down through the machine/software/classes etc and then choose that. It was only when i linked the SIMSSecurity to the Computer OU that it worked. I Hope that helps someone else if they need it. In the end it proved to be pretty simple. Just hadn't used the setting before so not sure how it worked entirely although i may need to tidy up some of the permission inheritance settings. A big thanks to all of the help given from you guys. I'm not sure i follow the above. Where about do i use the settings found in the batch file and apply them to GPO's? I don't go too deep into Group Policy usually as it tends to be a pain in the a**e. I have just added the bat file to the Staff GPO for login and found that nothing changed. Am i going about it all the wrong way? I think i am but somethings not clicking at the moment. It's been a while since i touched the GPO. This is what i have done so far: I editied the Bat file to say mydomain\staff (as all users for sims are staff) and then applied the bat file to the Staff GPO assuming that it would set the permissions on the files and folders for the user when they log in. Is this not right? I also looked at the Restricted groups. I don't really get this though. How do you add the local power users group to the restricted group. Maybe an article. I read the linked one at windowssecurity but the guy was speaking some different language becuase i didn't really get what he was saying. Sorry for the lengthy topic on this just not getting it

I have looked at the SIMSperm.bat and not quite sure what i need to edit to make the file add the users to the security settings on the files. I think you need to edit the [domain]\ section but cannot see how it adds the users as it seems to be just an echo command and no where else has information about the username \domain. I have done a search on the sims support site for simsperm.bat and found nothing. What do i need to do to this file in order to add users to the security on these files? For example if i have a domain called school and a group called staff, what do i need to add the make it work? SIMSPerm.bat below:
