OK so dropping the AFP access method to any method allows the users failing to login to be able to login again. But the kerberos is working fine since the user gets a ticket in the kerberos app and mounts all the other shares that he has access to on login. Man, this is a weird one. I hope that 10.5.5 sorts these problems out.

Well an update on what i have found out so far. The DC was messing about but it wasn't the reason my users could not login. I have since demoted the AD Dc server though as i do need to sort out the network connection. I have found that there seems to be an error when the users tries to login. The error is reported in the console. Its a strange error though as it regards the users home dir and not authenticating to it or something like that. See below: This issue happens with all the users that have created AFTER the other users. These pupils cam in after the build was finished. I used the same method i did with the other users and they still can't login. I have checked the users native record attributes in WGM against another user that can login in. There was one difference which i changed but still no go. I have also used the kerberos app in the core services folder to check if i get a ticket for the user if i try and authenticate as him and i do. So kerberos is fine as well. the AFP service is set up for kerberos only authentication and there is no guest access allowed on the shares. So now i just don't know what to do. I have already tried re-creating the user and still nothing. But it ONLY affects the newer users. Sometimes a diffrerent user will get the message but a restart of the client resolves that one. Its now driving me crazy. I really do think that leopard is SH*T

How did you install the app? Did you use the crappy MS installer or just copy the Office folder into the apps folder?

What are the benefits of running Moodle with sharepoint? Does this enable you to use sharepoint as the backend to pull data and what not into moodle? I'm not too familiar with Sharepoint and so would be interested in finding out how this would integrate with Moodle, which we will most likely be using here by the way.

Good morning everybody, I have just been handed an Acer 5610 laptop with vista installed. All i know is that it can't boot. What has happened i don't know but it sounds like it doesn't need much for this to happen according to other forums i read info on. What i get is a black screen with: I have tried the suggested repair and guess what? It didn't work What does make me laugh though is they don't even mention that you need to start off your CD to do this, unless i am mistaken and you don't need to All options to start, safe mode etc. end up with the same outcome. TIA

Yes i agree torledo. After re-reading, it doesn't sound like DNS as he was using Ip address as well. I would also second the upgrade to 10.4.x. It was the area i started in OS X and so far i think it was 10.4.9 that was the best version. 10.5 has so far been a bit of a pest for me. Here's hoping 10.5.5 is going to be a little better.

I've just recently moved from Office 2004 over to iWork 08 as you can now get an educational site license. There is one also available for iLife 08 too. and its not expensive either. We got our site license for £169 for iwork and £169 for ilife. I found the office 2004 to be slow.

It sure does sound like a DNS issue to me. Have you tried restarting the DNS service using the command line? Thats if the DNS service is indeed running on your OS X server.

I feel a bit of a tit now I have now managed to update my site. I must have been copying over some files that were still needed in one of the other folders. Which ones I don't know but to assist me i used rsync to sync the differences between the files. How this works i'm not too sure. I don't know whether it copies the actual files or what??? Anyhow the Joomla admin says it is v 1.5.7 For those like me that are afraid of the terminal, you can download rsync and a GUI for it. It's called RsyncX and works quite well. Easy to use as well. I forgot to mention I was using OS X 10.5.4?

The update doesn't have any configuration.php files in there so doesn't overwrite it. But i checked it anyway and nothing seems wrong. If i replaced the original files without overwriting the configuration.php all is fine again. I have checked the permissions and those seem fine too. I have also propagated the permissions through the structure as well just to make sure. Am i over-writing files needed for the template? I am not sure where all the files are stored for this. I know that the images folder is not over-written so thats not a problem and i leave the templates folder out as i mentioned earlier. I think that the updating of Joomla needs a little more clarification as it seems that you can't just overwrite the documents in the Webroot as stated. This is what i am doing and it ain't working unless it's just me.

I have just tried to upgrade my Joomla install to 1.5.7 but each time i go back to the site i get a blank page. The process i went through was: download the 1.5.3 to 1.5.7 update/patch file backed up all files and folders in the webroot dir Copied the 1.5.7 files and folders Pasted the 1.5.7 folders over the files in the webroot except templates Went to the Site in safari and got a blank page. According to the Joomla docs i have read you just upload the new stuff into the area where you have the old stuff. But this doesn't seem to work. Have i missed something?

Hello all, This has just started to become an issue as we have just started using OS X more now. I have an OS X server connected to the AD domain and it also hosts the Home dirs on the XRAID over AFP for the AD users. This all works fine apart from some random times when the login window won't authenticate anyone, or so i thought. I had a machine where i could log on as my own managed network account and i thought that maybe the problem lay with the amount of connections to a single afp share since it usually affected the pupils. I then tried a different staff account only to find that that one also failed to log in receiving the thread title as the error message. I don't know what is causing the problem since when i restarted the machine it failed again but upon the second time it worked OK. I have not specified a preferred DC in the AD Directory Plugin. Could this be the reason. Plus it also doesn't help when the other DC is being a sh*t and keeps losing network connection every 5 minutes. It may well be this...

So you have created the print queue on the OS X server and then added the printer in the WGM to the managed preferences for the managed group that has the AD users in? There is a bug that doesn't let AD users print to the printers using kerberos authentication but as for using the printers themselves it should be OK. I never bothered with this set up in the end as i wanted minimal fuss over the printing. In the end i went with Paper cut which does the work for me. I wanted to manage the print quotas as well so it worked out well for me. There is an workaround that allows kerberised print queues which i think i posted a link to in another thread. If not i may be able to find it again. I have not tested this though. Good luck

Thanks for all the responses. The server that will hold the sites would be a quad-core XServe with currently 2GB RAM and a 80 GB HDD, although by the time it all comes to fruition that will change. The main reason for hosting it in-house is because of file sizes. Some content will be podcast-based and so more than likely streaming will be involved. I will also be looking at hosting another schools' site on the box too. We are not part of our LA's network since the school was being demolished when this was being built (yeah that long ago. Its been 12-15 years now) so they thought there would be no point putting the infrastructure in place. So we are on an RM line with a limited amount of cash at the moment. We wouldn't be paying for the upgrade to the new line as we are trying to come to a compromise with the other school that would be hosting here as well. The other reason is FTP time for the other school. Since the files they will be uploading can be quite large, then their upload the the LA's servers takes ages.

Sorry its a little vague but its only just started happening. At the moment it is an adsl line (2Mb). Our ISP is RM and we may be looking to get it increased to 8Mb. We will be hosting out Web site (Joomla), VLE, and also mail server. (is it wise on one server?). I do not know the upload speed at the moment of the 8Mb connection. I expect if we take the total amount of pupils we have and they all connect together, 300 at a time. We currently have an RM managed firewall router with their internet filtering on top. We also have a smoothwall school guardian box behind this firewall as well also running its own firewall. I could put it in the DMZ of the School guardian box which should result in a firewall sandwich i suppose. This is all going to be tested as i am not too sure how i will go about all of this yet?

Hello, We would like to host our own servers in school and would love to hear some advice on the recommended (obviously the more the better) upload speed but also would like to know the minimum speed. A speed that will run it effectively for more than one user We may be getting a increase to 8Mb and possibly looking to negotiate the upload speed if possible so would like to know where abouts to aim for to gat a reasonably reliable service. Also how much does it affect your download service when running one internally? Thanks for any feedback and advice in advance.

I use two 11n airport extreme base stations configured for WDS. Its been more reliable than the Dlink ones and the Belkin ones and the netgear that i had in the past. It bridges across our playgrounds to the nursery from the Main building. Just checking it now since i haven't checked it before the six weeks using the utility provided and yep the link is still up

you could get a ds and an r4 card? If you both have a favourite picture of the both of you, you could get one enlarged on to a huge canvas. I did one for my missus of her and the little un for about £150 for crimbo.

I have a similar problem at home right now! What i have is a mac mini G4 running 10.4.11 and a Mac mini server 10.5.4. When i try to bind the tiger client to the leopard server it tells me that the dir admin credentials are invalid yet leaving the same ones in the boxes and then clicking Ok again, a dialog box pops up and tells me that the account exists and do i want to over-write. I say yes and all goes well. But i still don't get any network accounts available. My Macbook pro running 10.5.4 client binds and works fine. I have tried with required binding and without required binding. I have demoted my OD to a stand alone and then re-promoted back to a OD master only to find nothing changes. Did you manage to get this working SteveMC or anyone? I will have to do this with 15 Macbooks on Monday and so would love to have a solution before then. Nothing stands out as being wrong apart from the monstrosity that is Leopard.

So you get money just for clicking on ads? Do i click on every one i see then or doesn't it work that way? I don't do pay pal or have a credit card so without those i don't send money across the web. But i will happily click on as many of those colourful boxes as you want if it means i can help in other ways.

how many users do you have? I only had around three hundred or so and decided to manually copy the template profile into each home dir. Once I had edited the template by logging in as a user and then copying that template into the english.lproj template folder using the template app found on the apple-scripts site. I then copied the template onto the desktop. I then copied them manually into each user dir. With the acls propergating through the folders the permissions were created as the files copied in as expected. The only issue I saw was the drop box but we don't use them anyway. I would like to use the script method and will look into it when I have more time. For converting line endings I found textwrangler really good as you have the option at the save prompt to choose which type of carriage returns to use. Good luck with your adventures. I've yet to find out if mines gonna hold up to the task. That day is Monday.
