Don't forget to check the logs found in Utilities/Console. These can give quite a bit of information. Also try and connect to the share manually from one of the clients. See if the share mounts. keep the console open as well so you can see what is getting logged at each stage.

I'd like to say it gets easier but it don't. I walked into work this morning after being off ill ( and still was) to find that the mail server had lost its directory connection to the AD domain. This resulted in none of the users being able to use email. Also the booking system (mrbs) authenticates via imap (easiest way to set it up for me as i have never had much luck with authenticating against ADs LDAP) and so had to sort that out. Why it lost the connection i don't know. I found out that it happened around 4.30 yesterday afternoon.

Each time i have tried to run software updates from ARD it never works. I just get an NSURL error or something like that. I can go to each client manually and run the software update tool and it fins my server just fine and downloads and installs the updates form it too. I can also list the updates using ARD on the whole Suite of macs in our school using softwareupdate -l and running the command as root user. But the command fails as admin user but then when i run the command softwareupdate -i to install as root it fails and IIRC when run as admin fails as not enough access ? I could be wrong on the last bit though as its been a while since i last tried it. Running as admin may give the same error as root. Is this a configuration error on my part or something that just doesn't work as expected? I have asked this question numerous times but never really got a definitive answer. I have been told that softwareupdate -i doesn't work in ARD yet i read that some people have managed it.

If you have a description in the description field for the students, you could search on this and then know that you only have students? I think you can do that.

Ok Have you checked that the users you are trying have access to this share? You can check this by using effective permissions in Server admin. This should allow you to see what access rights the user has similar to the windows method. You could also check the afp authentication method as well. Choose any method option to test your mounting of shares. I have since changed my auth type to this as kerberos doesn't seem to work very well with new AD users :S Also ensure that the tick box for the login item to allow users to mount it with their own username and passwored is checked. I auto mount around 5 different shares on login, one is their home dir, one is a pupil share, one is a smb share on a windows 2003 box, and one is for the Paper cut client and a drop box for pupils. I don't use the desktop though i use the dock for my shares. I find this a neater alternative, especially when you use the spaces hack in WGM as well. I am using 10.5.5 server with 10.5.5 clients. Like i said before though, DON'T USE Finder's main window to mount the shares it messes up the unc, use the connect to server option instead. If you do use the finder window method you will find that you get an error on login.

Does it actually mount the share though i.e. can you access it? If so then it is most likely a setting. Remember that you can set these preferences by single user, groups of users and computer groups as well. You won't be able to test this on the server or machine where the share resides as it will say its local folder. I will keep thinking of what it can be.

Then the setting may be set in WGM. IIRC WGM, Preferences, Finder, There's settings in there that say what should be on the desktop. Sorry i can't be more specific, my tv only supports 800 x 600 res and WGm needs aty least 1024 to open. S**t telly of mine

It may be because the finder has been set to not show network drives on the desktop. I would check this first. Go to finder, Preferences, General and then tick connected servers.

This is how i would do it. Install workgroup manager (WGM) onto a machine other than the server hosting the share. One of the clients would be fine (unless you have removed the connect to server in Finder). Before starting WGM, go to the connect to server command in Finder and then type in the FQDN of the server and then the name of the share for example, myserver.example.com/myshare. This should then mount the share on your desktop. Don't use the finder sidebar to find the server, connect as and then mount the share as i have found that this messes up the path and then it doesn't mount correctly. To see this right-click on the share and click get info. Once the share has mounted go to WGM and then the group you want to mount the share for on login. Go to login then items and the click on the plus sign. Click on the share that you have already mounted and then choose. the share should now be in the list of items in WGM. Select the share in the list and then tick mount with the users name and password underneath the list. This should then allow the share to mount on login using the users credentials. You can also add the share to the users dock as well if you wanted to. Go to the dock preference and then add the share as you did just for the login items. Hope this helps. It is from memory so bits may not be what they say in the OS (such as the choose button). Don't forget to click done when you finish each change.

No. All the servers that are currently here are being moved to the new location. Our whole school is re-locating.

The server is being moved to a different location as well as having the domain renamed.

Sorry i haven't responded sooner. Do I not need to change the DNS records for the SOA and NS entries or will these change as part of the AD rename procedure? I confess that i have not read the docs yet. But i will be doing so very soon. Just would like to clarify the general method before i read the docs as i don't like reading MS guides much. I find them difficult to grasp sometimes:o

can you have a tutorial on how to get a software update server running on OS X server and then manage the preference for the client, but then ultimately use softwareupdate -i in ARD to remotely list and install the updates available. I have managed to get the clients here to list them but get a fail for every machine every time i run the -i command from ARD. If i go to each machine and the GUI everything works as it should. :S

My first year at the school was a nightmare when this came about. I installed it on all the machines in the ICT suite as a stand alone. The following year i installed it as a network client because the teachers had a week off time-table to get them done. Great. But what happened? Most of them didn't do it and then came to me asking for it to be installed on their laptop so they could do them at home. So 1 network and 15 stand-alone installs later and i could relax. Last year, me and the boss had a meeting to discuss how we would do it. We decided to copy the disc 15 times, one for each member of staff and an instruction manual on how to install it and use a memory stick to save the reports to and left them to it. I supported the ones that still struggled even though we gave them a virtual hand to help them through. I hate that time of year. We have the new release every year. I would love to see an alternative. I think the boss would as well.

Hello all, As most of you know by now i have an Active Direct 2003 domain with an OS X 10.5.5 Server in the mix. I have dual booting iMac systems running XP with SP3 and OS X 10.5.5. My AD has the DNS and DHCP roles. I have two DCs and the sims.net server is a member server. All servers are running server 2003 r2. We are in the middle of having a new school built for us and will be ready for the new academic year. But the school is changing name as well. So how would i go about changing over the domains as well including the DNS zones? I have found a site mentioning the AD domain renaming tools but as yet have to find out more info on the DNS. I think that this will be the hardest bit? I'm not too sure. TIA

I've been looking for a way to get one here in my primary school as i could see great benefits here. This school is a huge gaming community. I have been toying with the idea of setting up a gaming tournament for year group and the winner of each then plays the winner from a different year group. How is this going to help? Well i was going to ask Game station to donate some vouchers for their store and all the pupils buy into the tournament for 10p. 10p for the chance to win £35 worth of vouchers just before christmas sounds a good idea to me. Especially how everyone thinks that they're the bees knees at games anyway

They don't actually need to be email addresses. They could be aliases instead. We run a mail service on OS X and our AD users access their mail through this. The problem is though i need to be able to have one account set up for just emailing i.e. support, bookings etc. I could create the users but don't really want to go that way. I would prefer the mail that is sent to these inboxes to go to someone else instead. I hope that makes sense. I have tried the aliases at the command line but they don't work. Either because they don't work for AD users or because i just didn't do it right. It'll most likely be the latter. If i could utilise the AD side then i wouldn't need to bother with this at all then.

I've just downloaded and installed this. It says 30 days remaining in trial period at the login screen. I downloaded from the page the registration sends you. What gives? When i log in, at the top of the screen is lite and pro with 30 days remaining in trial period next to them. What do i do now? Is it going to expire. I have looked for the free download but cannot find it anywhere on your site. I followed the link in the first post and then clicked on the big FREE image on your site.

Hello all, My mail service is giving me grief today. I cam in this morning and went to show the kids how to create their account using the os x mail service, and then proceeded to delete my account to show them out it starts up when they start from fresh. I started mail client back up and found that the smtp service is not responding. Okay i thought. Just check the server and restart postfix. This made no difference. So i restarted the server. Still no difference. I have since re-enabled the smtp since it got disabled again (i don't know why) and i have tried the webmail system. I can log into the webmail system and send one but when i click check mail it never returns to me. The logs say this: Nov 24 15:04:26 services postfix/smtp[1764]: 8864EC79E9: to=, relay=none, delay=1414, delays=1414/0/0/0, dsn=4.4.1, status=deferred (connect to 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]: Connection refused) I've no idea why this has happened as it has been ticking over nicely for a while. I suspect a dodgy postfix as it keeps having to reload postfix config but mine is a very simple set up where the server is localhost and sends out. Any ideas i could try?

I have just this second sorted it out. What it was is the Check for update automatically was ticked. It seems that if an application launches that might possibly access perian (anything that uses Quicktime really) then perian will check for updates. The information was in the Console logs. Should have checked first to be honest. So what i have done is this. After configuring perian, i found the .plist that is created and then added it to the details section in WGM. I set it to always be managed. So now when anyone logs into a machine the automatically check for updates is unticked by the managed prefs. Thanks for all your help and suggestions though. Most appreciated.
