apparently 802.11n APs can hold more connections since it has more bandwidth available. We currently have a mobile trolley of 15 apple macbooks and an airport extreme. All connect wirelessly and use garageband. They also boot into windows. So far very few issues with the trolley. Even that said though i am still in the same thought as yourself when it comes to wireless. I don't like wifi networks. It's not as easy as people make out to set up. It's easy to get going but when there's problems, they can be very difficult to resolve. It's gonna be murder when the laptop per child scheme really gets underway.

Is the first one IE 6? Cuz i have the same issue. Every other browser renders the header fine except IE 6.

PS. I have been thinking about the creation of an assessment module as well for pupils so they can see their progress and the grades /comments they got after handing in a piece of work. Possibly adding an assessment table to hold the data. I thought i doesn't really NEED to be in SIMS since we don't extract the data from there anyway as we don't use it. Perhaps some graph/chart module blocks or something. Would this be easy?

Thanks for all of the responses. Since creating the thread we have had some good news with regards to hosting our VLE on our own server. This will help us to achieve what we want. I am considering using the edu-moodle template and creating a primary-based template from that. Most of it is fine just possibly change some of the icons used and make some of the fonts a bit larger to allow the younger kids better access (more space to click on links). I will also be looking at possibly trying to create some of the content myself (using flash). If any of them are any good then i will look to posting them up here on edugeek. The Boss has already agreed that we should start sharing more resources between schools. Maybe an area on Edugeek to allow the sharing of resources for VLE's? one more question though. Is there a way to specify a fixed layout for the modules that users have when they login and cannot change? I was looking at the fixed blocks section. Is this the correct thing to use? I haven't really got into the Moodle side of things yet. We are waiting for our new server to arrive. Thanks.

Hello all, hope you have had a good day. I have been looking at our websites today and have started thinking about external access to them for editing files and updating data. We currently have an Xserve that runs around 6-7 websites, each with its own root folder in the webserver folder. The issue i have currently is that if i use the url to connect to the server and add the path to the web site's root folder and use the username of the admin account i can connect fine. But i can then backtrack right down to the root of the local drive. Obviously this is an issue. But the root folder isn't shared either? I don't think i am approaching this correctly. Anyone know how to configure this correctly and securely? Hope someone can help as this will enable me to work a little more flexibly. TIA

sorry to re-direct a little but how well does the strata system work? We have been looking at this system. How much is the system to install? I have installed Asterisk and have managed to get a connection from a piece of software. At the moment just seeing if it is a viable solution for our school. As for the issue was it working before or is this something that you are just implementing. I have read that wifi connections for VoIP can be a bit flakey due to either lack of bandwidth (distance perhaps could affect this) or interference.

Most of the answers i have found seem to suggest that the file in question (picture?) cannot be found and so you end up with a message similar to this. It sounds to me that the user needs to bundle the image along with the powerpoint file so it can find the image when viewed. This is what is suggested on MS site when it is a video. I also found this site that may help: QuickTime and a TIFF (or JPEG) decompressor are needed to see this picture

Hi, After finding this thread, it gave me an idea of a project to add to our site. I found a great tree but now need a tutorial/video to help me make it 'grow'. There was an example of the sort of thing i mean on Adobes website when it first started out. What is the process called? I have searched for growing flowers but end up with Titchmarsh Anyone know of a tutorial to do this? TIA

If you have updated to XP SP 3, have you updated the boot camp drivers as well. There is an update to the boot camp download which is required apparently for SP3.

Could it be the nested OUs? I may be wrong but maybe you need to add all the users into a single group on the AD something like student filtering and then link that group to the smoothwall group. I can't remember if this was my problem or if it was nested groups that i had an issue with.

Apparently this is going to be replaced in the next version. How well though is anyones guess. I suppose we will just have to wait and see. It's a good job i don't use any

Don't forget that if you require a good level of support for VB and such then this is lacking in Open office as much as any other free open source alternative unless this has changed...

It all really depends on whether they are in Windows or OS X. Apple uses a US keyboard layout on all their keyboards. The @ symbol is above the 2. When installing XP using boot camp, you install the drivers and stuff. As part of the installation their is a keyboard mapping installed. This is called UK keyboard layout (Apple) or something like that. If you don't make the Apple layout the default mapping for the machine and then join it to a domain/add new users, the users that log in won't get the right keyboard mapping.

Then it sounds like they are using the alt key instead of the shift key. I am typing this on a mac right now and if i use the shift key i get £ and if i use the alt key with the number 3 i get #

Pages is OS X alternative version of Word. It comes with iWork. You can get a demo version off their site for 30 days. This may be able to import the document correctly and then export the document in the correct manner. You could also download Open Office 3 for OS X and avoid all the nastiness completely if you run Open Office for Windows at the workplace.

I've had problems trying to save iMovie 08 files on network home dirs in the past what i tended to do was to use iMovie 06 instead as i found it is easier to use anyhow. It is a free download for those who have iMovie 08 installed.

what version for office for mac is she using? If you have a copy of the document and it isn't a confidential one. Upload it to here and i will see what happens at my end. I have access to office 2004 and office 2003 for windows. Its just i don't recall having an issue with the 2 versions when we ran them together here. PS. What happens if you open it in Pages?

we are looking at it to give us internal phone system. Our external it support may be looking at implimenting a borough wide voip system (a meeting about that next week) so ours may hook into that one. I was going to use skype to test configuration settings first off so to see if I can make a call to call connection. Where could we get some voip phones from that are supported by asterisk

would skype do the trick for this? we run both windows and os x so skype would be ideal.

Hello all, I am in the process of looking into how VoIP systems work. I posted here a little while ago as to where to start. I have since downloaded AsteriskNow and installed it into a Parallels VM. Where do i go from here? Where would i start the configuration process to allow users to contact each other through the asterisk system? Can we use a software based voip client (such as skype) or do we need additional hardware. What would be essential configurations to make before any thing else like extensions is added? Sorry for all the questions. I would like to have Asterisk running in a trial environment to get my head around the whole configuring process. I have downloaded the o'reily book for asteriskNow and will be reading it pretty soon. It is BIG though Any help appreciated.
