Hello, I used to use RsyncX to update my Joomla installation. It worked fine. It is now well out of date and although it would do for what i need it for unfortunately i cannot find a link to download it now. So i thought i would give the command line a bash. Now it doesn't seem as straight forward as i would have hoped to use Rsync at the command line. I would also be looking to upgrade to 3.0.x but i can do this bit OK i think, following a tut from Bombich. My question is how would i be able to update the files for Joomla 1.5.9 to 1.5.10 using Rsync from the command line? Does any one do it like this? and how do you guys update your Joomla install Thanks.

What differences are there between the two? If there are differences such as proxy settings and stuff such as static DNS entries, Ip address and others, then it may be worth configuring locations. Locations allow you to set different settings for your network connections and then save them into a sort of profile i.e. work, Home etc. Then you can switch between them on the fly. It does actually work really well.

I would still be inclined to use Net-restore, if it works with 10.5.6. The reason is it is simple to image a machine, it creates the .nbi file as well so you just save it straight into the NetBootSP0 folder and also you can stick your .pkgs into a folder on the server and edit a script to locate them. This will deploy the .pkgs after the image has deployed and it's automated. You can also set net-restore to find the name of the machine from a CSv file and it will rename the client for you after the image process has taken place, during the by-host preference settings part i think. Overall i think it works fantastically well and also can deploy the Windows side if you're doing things that way. Just my 2p worth. You can no longer download net-restore though from Bombich site, you will need to find an alternative source.

How well do updates go after all the modification? Do source files over-write the changes or does it work quite well? Also an australian company has written a plugin for MRBS that allows it to be used via iCal. Has anyone found the code or used this or even managed to do this themselves? If so how? Thanks.

IIRC i think i saw a basic proxy configuration under the web service option. This is of course 10.5 server...

Theres a squid and dansguardian installation that you can get. I think the guy who used to do it was called dave lopata. I will see if i still have his web address. There is a package that you can also download here but this may not be what you were asking at all. If not then my apologies.

IIRC if you boot from the installation CD and go to the tools menu and click Disk Utility. Erase the external drive. You should then be able to continue the installation as normal but click erase and install option for the installation. I think this creates the correct format option anyway. If not then do as the previous poster suggested and format as a MBR partition. Then continue the installation as normal. As far as i am aware there are no other things you need to do to install onto an external. If you have a power PC mac then booting from USB ins't so easy, but apparently it CAN be done. You will need to find links to do this. Alternatively you could clone the internal HDD onto the external drive. Thats what i did for my Net-Restore drive.

We have decided to go with StudyWiz since this was the only package that seemed to be quite flexible in how it was set up. We already had an Xserve available that we purchased to run our Joomla and Moodle on. This still put us in good stead for StudyWiz since we already had access to Apples' WebObjects package (something that you would need to purchase in order to use StudyWiz on a Windows Box). The guys at StudyWiz allow 2 methods of hosting. The first is that they host the server externally. The 2nd is that they install their software/application on our server and we run from there. This helped us in 2 ways. The first was that we had more control over our own server. The 2nd was that the local install could reduce the costs per annum considerably when compared to the other VLEs around. For example. I think IIRC DBPrimary was asking around £2,000 for the first year. Thats fine but then it went up the following year (estimated i think) and then up further in the third. This was hosted on their servers. StudyWiz. The first year would be expensive but if you look at long term ownership and you host it yourself then you are quids in from what i can see. The first year has the costs of Training/installation and setup fees and other items. But the following years for us it should come in at around £900. This is based on the amount of Pupils you will have accessing the VLE (teachers and Parents are free) and also per pupil is at £4 each. Now we have have a few more concerns as well with the next couple of years in regards to available funds so we gave the guy who we got in touch with for StudyWiz a call and looked to see what we could do. They are also quite flexible in how you set out the first year costs (ie spreading the cost of training over a couple of years instead of just the first). All in all i am pretty happy so far with the way StudyWiz have helped with our situation. it hasn't been installed yet as i need to configure a few things at my end, but i will update on how i find the whole experience. They are going to install the software remotely from Tasmania so, should be interesting. I also found another VLE when i visited the Education Show. MyLearning it was called. It looked pretty good but expensive for us. BUT on the plus side it is pre-packed with content and sherston have some stuff that you can stick in it as well. Also according to both sherston and the guy on the MyLearning stand in is the most standardised VLE platform available. DBPrimary also seemed very good. It's just a shame that we couldn't reduce the cost a little more for the per annum costs.

Yes, i have three. This is what i use but if the machines have been logged into windows and then shut down from there for the day then OS X does not start up the following morning. This only happens when the machines have been in Windows hence me running a script to restart them rather than shut them down. I just need to know if there is a way to restart the machines rather than shutdown so they always stay on if coming from Windows. I hope i explained a little better this time.

I think the new AD-OD PDF from bombich explains how the whole OD permissions/policy system works. What get overridden by what and which takes precedence. You may wish to read that. It is a great read and very informative. The new one even goes into how augmented records work and how to create your own. There are also the Open Directory guides on Apples own website. These are also worth reading, but more importantly than any reading i think is to keep trialing things that you find out. Of course this can only be done if you have a mac at home or time at work to look at things. This is what i did. I am like yourself. I have had no formal training whatsoever on either Windows 2003 or any Apple product. Once you get it set up and working then it generally just keeps ticking over (although i still have issues with my SMB service i need to look at). I think the Application signing has something to do with the sandboxing that Leopard introduced although i am not certain. The failing permissions could be an overriding issue, for example, they may have permissions on the computer and the users' group. One has precedence over the other, similar to Windows GPO I tend to set most of my permissions on the computer lists. This has made things simple but also a nightmare when it comes to sorting out permissions further down the line if any changes are needed between pupils and staff. There are also workgroups as well. A user can be a member of different workgroups. If this is the case then the user can choose which workgroup to load on login. This gives a bit of flexibility as the user can choose what restrictions to apply when they log in. I hope this gives a little idea of what can be achieved. For more information though i would recommend reading the Apple guides as well as the other PDFs have been written. You can also download an evaluation of the Leopard Server now from the Apple website. Also check out AFP548.com for even more articles. Some of these are very technical docs as well.

Hello, I have just been reading a thread with regards to shutting down XP clients at the end of the day and starting them backup first thing in the morning using WoL. Now i have a question to all those that bootcamp their macs in school. I have WGM turn on all the macs in School at a set time first thing in the morning. The only thing is though is this. When a pupil has been on the Windows side and has shutdown the machine. If that was the last OS to be used that day then the policy to turn them on in the morning doesn't work on those machines. I have setup a script that restarts any mac running XP and then it reboots to the Bootpicker screen. This allows the OS X shutdown script to turn them off. Does this also happen to your machines and if so how have you combatted this problem? Mike Bombich mentioned it on his site and suggested to create a script to restart the machines to the bootpicker. I tried this but the user doesn't have the rights to do what i want according to the eventvwr logs. Hope you can help. This one has been niggling me for a while.

I saw this but was put off by the last comment. I have downloaded and installed it. The last comment suggested that it wasn't working with 10.4.10 but that may have been something to do with his setup/firewall. I will report back with my findings.

Does anyone know of an ident daemon for OS X 10.5? I need one to use ident authentication to my smoothwall box.

What about implementing a RIS server (i am assuming A windows setup?) I say this for these reasons. If there is say a server at each site, then RIS can be set up and controlled from Group Policy. This would then allow the volunteer to re-image a machine with restricted access. They would only be able to use the images they have permissions for. I think that is how it works. This would also alleviate the cash spent on apps that do jobs that can be done for free. If you already purchase a Server 2003 license and have volume licensing at each site. I have made quite a few assumptions in this post but hopefully it may help a little.

I think i did go with 777. I'm not entirely sure as it was a while ago. I set up the user permissions as follows though, local user full access, web user read only and everyone no access. Not sure if i should put them here?? This allows the web users to browse the sites whilst allowing the local user access to edit and change files. I thought giving everyone user no access (since everything seems to work fine without any) should be the safest option. Any thoughts on this?

Do you mean inside each one? How would this work when upgrading sites such as Joomla, Moodle? Would it not make it harder to do these things? So SSL requires individual IP addresses for each site. Would this then allow me to use as many self-signed certs without errors appearing in the logs? The sites still work but i am unsure as to what issues/vulnerabilities could arise from keeping it this way. Thanks for the advice so far though guys. Most appreciated.

Hello all, So i am readying a Mac OS X Server (10.5.6) ready to serve out our web-pages, VLE, Support desk and email. But first i have a few questions. 1. I have currently set up the sites so that the DBs are on a different server from the Web front-ends. So each website (Joomla, Moodle, Support desk) has to connect back to another machine. Is this a good idea. The two servers won't be in the same location. 2. If the first answer is yes it's a good idea, then is it a good idea to use non-standard port numbers? For example moving MySQL's port number from 3306 to something else. Moving IMAP port numbers to something else? and SMTP? Is it worth the extra hassle of configuring? 4.MySQL Permissions for DB access. When configuring Joomla, Moodle etc. You create a user to connect to the DB to. What permissions should this user be given? Do they need all of them or only a select few? 3. The final one (I think). I have numerous sites hosted on the one server and all of them use a log in facility. To protect the passwords i am using SSL. Now the problem is Apache complains about using SSL in conjunction with Virtual Hosts. This is something i need to research. But if this is the case how can i use more than one SSL site on one server? Hope you can help. I think that's everything...for now Thanks in advance.

You can use Apple remote desktop to change some of the records. Click on the machine you are looking at and then file > get info. This will bring up a window with the details for the machine. You can click the edit button and change the data shown. Whether this changes the data on the machine or just in ARD i'm not sure. Have you also restarted the machine since?

Can you not just delete the keychain itself? Doesn't os x re-create the keychain with the users login credentials?

How did you create your user accounts and how are they managed? OD or AD users? Their profiles are stored where? How did you create the OS X profiles? I have changed users passwords (in AD) and IIRC they have updated in the keychain also. The only issues i had is when users chose to remember the Proxy password and then their password had been changed. I haven't looked at the issue for yonks though so not sure where it is at now. How i created my accounts is like this. I created a temp user, like you would when creating mandatory profiles. Log in as this user and configure the system as you would. Delete the keychain and then logout. Then using terminal copy the users home dir onto the server. Copy the temp users home dir into the default home template. When users log in this is the template that they should get, unless they are AD users who have force local home dir turned on. I think then they get the local system template home. I can't guarantee that though. Someone would need to confirm. Hope this helps a little

I take back what i said previously. Only Yesterday did i have the issue you described. It seems that time is what kills Finder the most. If the disconnection and reconnection is quick say around 2 - 5 secs (maybe a little longer) then all is fine. But if there is a good deal of time between disconnection and reconnection then i think you will see issues. I can't really be entirely accurate. The reason is because there were other factors involved. The member of Staff was re-connecting into a switch as opposed to straight into the wall. This may also have had an impact. Finder did eventually come back albeit painfully slowly but was still unusable. The only thing i could do was log off. So my apologies. My mistake. Can you forgive me? PS. Thanks for the link. I will look into it.

Has anyone or is anyone else using the DBPrimary VLE System. I would like to hear of your opinions of the system.
