All those that use SSH, how do you get around the non-static IP? I was thinking of getting the services set up on the firewall so that only my IP address was allowed. Obviously if my IP changed then i would be up the creek.

We have a server located externally now instead of in school. I would like to be able to manage/control it from my home in case of any issues that are raised. The problem for me as far as i am concerned though is that i don't have a static IP address at my home. I am with Virgin Media who have stated they do not do this sort of thing and if I wanted it i would have to go to their business package. So how do you guys get around this sort of thing?

If we get the go ahead to order some of the Lego Mindstorms, we may have some roamers (the machines, not sure where the software came from) available

Just found my install guides for censornet. The default root password is root.

I would look at Moodle's XAMMP packages to start off with. This will give you a complete install with all software required by Moodle. This way you can play around with it and break it

Our school has been looking at VLEs for quite a while now and we in the end decided to go for StudyWiz. We looked at Moodle but couldn't see an easy way to theme the VLE for use across our Primary School. We have kids aging from Nursery? maybe from reception to Year 6. We wanted something that the young kids could use and didn't look to baby-ish for the year 6. Moodle from our point of view was just too rigid in its look to do anything with. This was one on the reasons we left it. I also found it a little hard to get to grips with the administration process as well although i didn't spend a great deal of time on this side of things as was looking into ways of changing the look and feel. We also looked at Dokeos and also drupaled. Drupaled was looking good, it just wasn't as prgressed as Moodle. We also found an online VLE that you could sign up for free to and use. It looked interesting although i wasn't sure how the LEA would react to use using a platform such as that one. But the reason we went with StudyWiz is that they allowed us to install their software to our local server and then host it there and just pay the costs of the Pupils accessing the VLE. You don't pay for Teachers or parents. This made the costs per annum very reasonable especially for a Primary School's budget.

To me when i was viewing in Safari, it seemed like the links were just under the actual text. Maybe that might help you could stick a white block underneath and make this the hit area/hyperlink?

Hello, I have a Polish friend who is interested in working in the ICT Sector. He is currently studying with me for his CCNA. he would like to gain some experience within this sector but doubts his fluency with the english language. Personally i think its pretty good. He is also studying his Essentials for the certification. He has good skills with Linux and knows his way around a PC. He also is a quick learner, surpasses me anyway. So I would like to help him out and see if there is anything going either ICT industry or School? Thanks.

Here, as most of you know, we have moved to OS X. This allows us to utilise the iMovie to do the video side of things. But we also use a free application called framebyframe that does stop motion. We did some stop motion using the macbooks with some Logitech webcams for portability attached to them. This was a great success. The kids then exported this as a movie and imported into iMovie for effects and editing. You can do all of this stuff on a Windows box as well though i should imagine. We use comic life to some extent although it could be used more. I am thinking of getting iWeb started as well since each user can have their own website and then build stuff around what they are learning. I thought about having blogs and stuff for the kids to track what they are doing and their thoughts on literature that they are reading and notes etc. From a control point of view we are/were looking at purchasing the lego mindstorm kits. The software is multi-platform and is also relatively simple to use. Cost i thought was pretty good considering what you got. They are also developing the KS1 stuff as well from what i gathered at Bett this year. I have a few ideas and have spoke to the gaffer about setting up a fort-nightly meeting with himself, me and a tech-savvy Teacher. This would allow us to discuss the areas that need improving and also the areas that are succeeding. IWBs are throughout the school. Some users good, a few great, most reasonable.

Thanks for the offer. We have now though decided to just send the voice data over the cat 6 cabling and terminate at the switchbox. The guy called it sending voice over data rather than voice over IP since the IP protocol isn't going to be used. The rj45 at the user end will be converted to a standard phone socket. Thi sis how i understood it anyhow.

download netstumber and scan the surrounding area. It should show you all the surrounding wireless networks and also the channels that each are on and the proximity of the network too. This is perhaps the best way to find out what's going on from a wireless point of view. Also when 802.11n came out, apparently the strength of the signal would if it was close enough would over-power 802.11g networks

Now your asking. I can't remember what make the machine was or what the board was. I do know that it wasn't a Dell. Give them a call though and explain the issue. They may be able to point you in the right direction. It wasn't just 1 or 2 we had though. It was a whole load. Around 20-25 machines IIRC.

We contacted the vendors of the mainboard that was in the machine and they sent us a link to download an application that would generate a GUID and flash the board with the new one. We had to do each one since the boards all came with the same GUID meaning we couldn't RIS any machines. Is that the same thing?

You would be better off speaking to Smoothwall for a cost since they would be able to give you an accurate cost since it is based on the total amount of concurrent connections to the filtering system. But as a guide i have 60 licenses and it costs us around 650 per year. This i think includes support and updates.

School guardian can be either hardware or software i think. I had the software which you download as a iso and then either burn to a cd for install or mount and install in a virtual machine. I'm not too sure about the hardware side though. It's not that bad cost-wise especially when you factor in the excellent support as well. Almost pays for itself.

We have the Safety Net filtering on our line and it sounds like its just as bad. At one point we couldn't download tux paint as sourceforge was blocked. Then we had the boss having a furniture site blocked. He was trying to find some quotes for desks and tables. He was stunned to see it blocked for porn

Slightly OT but is it me or does the whole of the promethean sites seem really slow when browsing? Each time i have had to navigate through their site (which is pretty bad as well) it becomes painfully slow and actually quite annoying after a bit.

It also happens on Safari on OS X as well. Version 3.2.1 (5525.27.1), which means this may also be the case on the Windows version? Still a great website though.

I think the school guardian does what you need. Maybe there is a possibility of a trial so you can check what you want is available

i have recently been looking at a drobo for home use. They seem to be pretty cool and simple to use. A network sharing device can be added to the box as well. Not sure how it would perform in a school environment though. Would be interesting to see.

I am not sure what the password it is asking for since it has been over a year since i last installed it. I may be able to find the disc out and try a re-install. Tried to download it but it was taking far too long. Around 7 hours for 240-odd meg iso

Thanks Tony. Do i need to start SSH first before i do the rsync as per the man pages or will it just use it by default since the destination is remote? I have been looking to implement the bombich remote backup/sync method of backing up using rsync and also ssh along with public/private keys. This will alow me to schedule the process without any need for authentication. I have updated to rsync 3.0.5 as per the tutorial and have added a public/private key (in a test environment). All i need to do now is test the wrapper script and add it to cron. I think thats all that is left. And then to put it into production.
