Can i ask why? If a user configures their login profile correctly OSX can be as secure on a laptop as windows. File vault is supposed to encrypt the entire user home dir and if the user configures the machine so as you need to login from sleep/screensaver, this should be enough for security? Plus if you configure file vault for them then you can set the master password.

I think thats how much the phone (cost-wise) will be for that tariff. So if you want the £35 p/m you have to put down £185 for the 16GB phone. I was sort of expecting the conversion to be something like that considering the conversion rates at the moment.

It's OK i have managed to sort it now. The problem was our school is moving and i had already packed all my stuff up ready to go. I was reluctant to go through all my boxes to find the OS X Server CD. But i did in the end and was lucky enough to have it sitting on the top. Booted off the disc ran disk util which fixed quite a few permissions and then rebooted. Logged in and all was fine

Hello, I have just installed the OS X Server 10.5.7 update on an Intel Xserve and on reboot it got to the login Window. When i login it just goes to the Space image and stays there. I can't login as any other user since i have disabled all other logins (including Root) for this machine. It is also our mail server although no real mail is stored on it. How can i get this thing back up ??? Any ideas. I have logged into single user mode and run fsck -fy and fsck_hfs -fy /dev/driveVolume and it comes back as all things are fine. I am looking at how to run Disk Util in single user mode but can't find any info. Apparently in Tiger /etc/rc did the trick to start things off but it is no longer there in Leopard, according to the Forums i have read.

You have a mac? You could try Berio. If you want to record a windows thing just launch it in a VM

I was under the impression that os x would not not install ok anything over than itsown hardware anyway? Unhacked that is. Also that the only version of vmware that can virtualise os x is vmware fusion and parallels server. The ones that run on os x anyway. Or am I mistaken?

I too had poor experiences with Toshiba laptops. We had some Sat A2100's i think they were. No end of problems with the batteries.

Download a trial of Parallels Server. At the last beta it was installing OS X Leopard Server and OS X Leopard (IIRC) onto Apple Hardware. You can VM OS X/OS X Server as long as the virtualising software and the VM reside on Apple Hardware. Both Parallels and VM Ware i think are no allowed to VM OS X. It just needs to be done on Apple Hardware.

I used to use NTLM authentication for the Macs but for some unknown reason the sites were broken each time. I have since started to use identd. This seems to work better than NTLM authentication and is also transparent to the user. I would recommend this method over NTLM personally. You can also use ident on the XP side as well. This is the way i am going. With the mac side you can send the credentials of the current aqua user and also specify a user by default in the system prefs tab that is installed with the identd software. Since it sounds like you have a fair bit of money to hand yo may be interested in AdmitMac rather than going the Xserve route. This allows you to manage the OS X clients right in the AD.

I had to set up some mac minis for the nursery. Not quite the same but i used the parental controls to lock it down. This seemed by far the easiest thing to do. In your case depending on the requirements i would start with the configuration of universal access and then. You could turn them on and then disable the keyboard shortcuts. You could on the other hand configure the universal access stuff on the normal accounts and configure the keyboard shortcuts for those instead.

I haven't come across this issue as of yet. I have tested on a mac mini with 2GB ram and a networked home dir, but on a smart board. I hope this isn't the case since we have just ordered a complete smart board replacement here. Really good deal for the boards. I have seen issues with the activ Vote systems though.

Ive used a few Hitachi Disks over the last few years and i don't recall any of them failing on me. I think the ones stuck in my Apple RAID (4 250GB) are hitachi drives as well. If i purchase any drives if the hitachi ones come in cheaper i do tend to buy those.

Well it's not me in charge of the firewall rules or ports, so no i don't do it. How would you firewall off non-UK addresses? Where would yo go for that sort of information? I'm just getting into the network side of things at the moment
