  1. Another issue would be if they did something similar to what Apple do with their itunes content. You can download it once but if you lose it then you will need to re-purchase the files even though they have an entire record of your previous purchases. It only takes a couple of manufacturers to do this an then it becomes standard.
  2. i had to do this with one of our logos. I used flash to redraw the lines since it is somewhat easier to create the lines in Flash for me anyway. Worth a look in case of a "next time". Good work though sysman.

How do I ghost a MAC

No but i have been wanting to try and set up some sort of run once script on first start up to rename the client and then join it to the domain. This is perhaps the only thing that really needs to be done on the XP client side. The only thing stopping m is A) knowledge and B) time. If i do get the time though i will post my findings. PS. Does anyone know if pre-staging a mac would help in the client hostname being applied when it restarts, similar to RIS?
  4. As far as i know Safari only uses NTLM Authentication, not kerberos. You can see if kerberos is working by simply logging in looking at the kerberos app (or by typing kinit at the command line). Navigate to a share on either the AD/OD. If you go to an AD server in the sidebar in Finder you should see all of the shares that you have access to mounted without needing to authenticate. You will also see a ticket handed in your kerberos app for the service used eg, afpserver/servername.fqdn.com. If you are unsure about yor kerberos domain on the OD run sudo klist -kt. This will list all of the kerberised services and also what realm they are kerberised with. They all should be the AD realm apart from one afp service and vnc i think.
  5. You could try this...The Graffiti Creator - Home Of Graffiti Art There's some free graffiti fonts here http://simplythebest.net/fonts/graffiti_fonts.html You could also try this tutorial if you have access to photoshop http://www.rnel.net/tutorial/Photoshop/12208
  6. Can you not also get a free graffiti font? Although what you have is waaay better than what i could do, i just think that the font you have along with the crayon seems a little child-like, especially for the year 7 to 9.
  7. I would love to use public transport. I absolutely love using the London underground. Admittedly i have only used it a handful of times when i went to the Bett show but i thought is was great, excellent fun. Its just in the West Mids its rubbish. IIRC the metro (tram) from B'ham to Wolvo stops at wednesbury after around 11.30pm at night....Why???
  8. Because you either use one or the other. Taking into account the cost of running each one individually, you cannot realistically afford to run both at the same time. So if you decide to go the public transport route, chances are you aren't going to be running a car and keeping it at home. So when the time comes that you indeed need a car it won't be there. My point is that its a decision, unless you can afford to run both then you are very lucky.
  9. It was just an example but considering the weight of this thing it has done a fair bit of traveling for a computer. It was at my home and then it moved with me to my new home and then moved with me again to my second new home only for it to be loaned to my sister whilst she did a media course, and so it moved back to my original home. She has now moved out and it now needs to come back to my new new home. Not really something you want to do on public transport. But i do occasionally take hardware home from work. For example only the other day i took 2 imacs home to create a test-bed similar to works. I also had an xserve on my back seats that was being transported to it's new location. I move quite a bit of hardware around. Something i could never do if i only had public transport. Not because its late or expensive. Just because it's not really feasible. Sometimes you just need a car.
  10. I wouldn't want to walk the measly 6 miles i have to travel to work carrying a powermac G5 everywhere. One of the reasons i need my boot

How do I ghost a MAC

Yep but if you check out Apple's snow leopard server pages netrestore is listed. Its right at the bottom
  12. You could set up a gallery in a restricted area and then set the permissions to special. This is how i created my virtual staffroom. Staff have to authenticate to access it
  13. I think most people miss the main issue, for me it is anyway. The cost of public transport. If (where i live its west midlands travel or was) they know that more and more people are to start using the public transport then the cost doesn't go down. It goes up. So the more people use the public crap the more it'll cost everyone. So no-one wins apart from the owners/council who can say that they met their quota for CO2 emissions. When i used to use the buses it cost some like £2.50 for a day-saver. I think that is now nearly double. The last time i purchased one of those was around 2003. That's not that long ago. And what about the folks that suffer from travel sickness when on a coach/bus? I, personally only suffer badly on coaches/buses but never in a car Anyway, my 2p

How do I ghost a MAC

It'll be interesting to see what Apple do with Net-Restore since Deploy Studio is quite simple and also pretty flexible to use. If their system imaging util is anything to go by, i think i will stick with Deploy Studio
  15. HodgeHi

How do I ghost a MAC

Deploy Studio can also Remote Install normal PCs and it works quite well. Relatively quick. Deploy Studio is also quite quick for macs. Just deployed a dual boot system this week. Both partitions took about 2.5 minutes each. After reading your last post HallX, i would probably suggest Deploy Studio. It will help with all of the other stuff you would have to do before binding to an AD/OD setup. For instance Deploy Studio can be configured to rename each client after the image process, but more importantly can also re-configure the Local KDC on each mac partition. This is important as it will stop your machines from being able to join the OD domain as they will all be seen as the same machine by the OD Master. Also Deploy Studio can be viewed remotely DURING the imaging process. It can also be set up to email you if a problem crops up.
  16. Hello all, So it looks like it is my turn now with some AFP/Finder grief. I have re-built my domain (both AD and OD side of things) and have come to teh point where i need to create the shares to store the User Dirs. There are currently 2 issues that i am facing the biggest issue is the shares fail to mount in Finder. I get the message on the screen, although that is only when i double click on the mounted share to access it. So i reality the share is mounting, OS X just can't navigate it. But it's only a problem through the side-bar. I can click on my home dir and view the contents just fine, which are stored inside that share-point that the side-bar can't navigate through. The other issue is that i am trying to create the home dirs for the AD users but when i run createhomedir -n /Active\ Directory/All\ Domains -u ADUser, it ignores the AD part and just runs against the OD FQDN. Whether the 2 are linked i'm not sure. I'm just hoping someone can give me a little help as i'm losing the will to live. Errors in the logs as well are in picture 2. TIA
  17. No you can add AD groups to the OD groups but IIRC you cannot nest groups. For example, OD_Staff_Group > AD_Staff_Group > AD Users will work but OD_Staff_Group > AD_Staff_Group > Year_1_Group > AD User more than likely won't. I don't know if this has changed in Leopard though but i could never get this to work in Tiger
  18. Hello, I just looked at the Meet the Staff module found on the right hand side of the home page in the Joomla 1.5 to see if i could ad a hyperlink to the bottom. I was going to link it to a second page where all members of staff are listed so parents could find the name of the teacher for their child/ren. Unfortunately when i did add a link at the bottom it screwed up the layout of the four blocks. I went back in to the module and just added a few lines in to place them back onto their own lines. But on save they revert back to the wrong location. How can i get the module to display correctly again and how can i just add a simple hyperlink without breaking it all? TIA
  19. @CPLTD How much would it be for the controller and say 5 APs? Also does the controller power the APs as well or would we need a second switch to do this? I have already purchased a 48 port PoE switch for the job, just in case.
  20. I'm not really comfortable with any coding language. Even HTML gives me grief Here's what i got though. It maybe could do with a little tidying up but should work for anyone really. #!/bin/bash # userlist.sh #Exporting the Usernames dscl /Active\ Directory/All\ Domains -list /Users UniqueID| awk '{print $1","$2}' > $PWD/Users.txt #Setting UIDs variable as the list of names in the Users.txt UIDs=$PWD/users.txt #Change the HomeDir variable to the location of the Users Home Dirs. HomeDir=/Users/TestHomes/ #Create the User Home Dir location folder sudo mkdir $HomeDir #Creating the name variable with the names from the users.txt file (UIDs variable) for name in $(awk 'BEGIN{FS=","}{print $1}' < "$UIDs" ) #for name in $(awk 'BEGIN{FS=","}{print $1}' < "$UIDs" ) # Field separator = : ^^^^^^ # Print first field ^^^^^^^^ # Get input from password file ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ #Run through the users.txt creating the home directories for each user do sudo mkdir $HomeDir/$name sudo cp -R /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/ $HomeDir/$name #chown each Home Dir to the users who owns it sudo chown -R $name $HomeDir/$name let "n += 1" done exit 0
  21. According to this site it seems i got 7 years for drug smuggling
  22. As others have said i re-image usually every 6 week break to re-fresh all the machines around the school. Any software that has updates released are applied during the re-imaging process. Also to remove and slowness brought about by Windows. XP fresh with SP3 is waaay quicker than Xp SP2 and a tonne of patches.
  23. HodgeHi

    Net-Restore

Hello, Does anyone have Net-Restore versions 3.3.6 and 3.4.6 available that they can create a download link for? Since you can no longer download it from Bombich's site and all other download sites did not mirror it, it is proving impossible to download. TIA.
  24. My mac mini and OS X Server at home has been solid now for over a year
  25. I am trying to create a script for the home dirs of the users in AD on the OS X Server (see the coding forum). I need to be able to list the group members so i can extract the staff group users and create their home dirs in the Staff folder. I also then need to be able to extract the pupils users and create their home dir into their own pupil folder. I could just create a single user dir for all of them i suppose I also would like to extract the PrimaryGroupID so i could chown using the UniqueID:PrimaryGroupID /Users/$1Username This should then sort out the permissions side of things. So far i have managed to get the list of Users and their corresponding UIDs and using this list created their home dirs and also copied the pre-created home dir template into each one. I just now need to sort out the permissions
