Hello all, This is just a heads up really. Upon installing Snow Leopard Server and adding our Joomla Website to it, i found that Apple have updated PHP to version 5.3 Now Joomla doesn't currently run on PHP 5.3 and so needs a patch to make things work again. This patch as far as i can find is still currently in beta. The issue i faced was that the main menus were not displayed on the home page and they were not visible in the back end either although the menu stated that there were 34 items. Upon installing the patch located here If anyone knows of a patch that has been made available for production i would love to know, but until then this seems to work for the majority. I haven't noticed any issues as of yet. Hope this helps someone else.

Then you may have been lucky. IIRC they stopped the shipment around about then. I'm not sure if it is related but the Remotes magnetically attach to the side of the White iMac to stop them from getting lost. They don't do this to the alu ones But I'm not too sure of the desgin of the new remotes, but do like the look of the mouse...and the 27" imac...and the new macbook looks quite pleasant...and....

Blu-ray. I reckon they are relying on the speed of the internet increasing enough to dislodge Bluray in favour of the streaming of HD films. Sticking in a Bluray player could potentially destroy their HD film sales/rentals. These haven't really taken off as well as the iTunes store has. Apple remotes haven't been shipped with imacs since the white imac disappeared. Most importantly though and something i think most people whose Schools are venturing into mac ownership is the mac mini shipped with server pre-installed. Doesn't have a DVD drive though. So when you mess up the configuration you had better be good with the remote install

What is the CAL connected to? the Server or the client? I am trying to get away from the nonsense that is CAL licensing to the extent where i am possibly looking to use my OS X Server to provide most if not all of the services and use it to manage the Windows Clients. I have yet to test this in production though.

So does that mean 1 CAL per device or 1 CAl per device per OS?

The way i ready the scenarios Tiger isn't one of the OSes that are granted the upgrade rights, unless the scenario was just an example one. I do have a question of my own though. Do Microsoft view other OSes such as OS X 10.5 as clients in their own right thus needing a CAL for each OS if it connects to their servers whether it be exchange or just server 2003 file servers?

Is this disc the one that came with the machine. I found that the new Nvidia education imacs cannot boot off of a DVD that is lower than 10.5.6. So to clarify if the disc you are using is 10.5.0 - 10.5.5 retail or other then they won't boot due to the graphics card drivers not being part of those builds. Possibly the same thing with your external HDD. You may need to update the version you have to 10.5.6 and above.

I went for a CCNA. Useful at work for finding faults and optimising the network since my networking skills/knowledge weren't the best. Also a good certificate/qualification to have under the belt since it is known world-wide.

I think you need to crop the images to the right size before uploading. It's how i did mine.

My brothers just finished installing win 7 on an HP with 8GB ram. Win 7 64bit edition ultimate. It also the p8700? core 2 duo processor @ 2.53 i think it was. He did a comparison of this boot up to login against his first gen macbook pro running 10.6. The win 7 went through the bios post and got to the logo appearing before the macbook's apple logo appeared. But he managed to log onto the macbook pro before the login prompt appeared on the win 7 . I know this doesn't mean much but one thing that struck me as being slightly poor is the fact that the snow leopard was an upgrade install from 10.5, and all his settings, apps and crap was still there. Yes, you could argue that it had perhaps cached most of the info, but the amount of times the win 7 laptop had restarted, that should have cached some stuff too. Poor comparison, i dunno but in sheer performance the HP win 7 laptop should have beaten it hands down.

if you have insurance its best to leave the cables to the engineers. We have just had a new build and our cabling is still under warranty/insurance and would be made void if messed with, apparently. Would've loved to fiddle with it though

@bladedanny Please accept my apologies My experience may be down to the image sizes being deployed. I deploy the base image of OS X 10.5.8 and deploy apps usually afterwards using ARD. We don't use any of the Final cut stuff here so that keeps our image sizes down

Not necessarily true. If you mean the configuration of the partitions themselves then yes i would agree it can be time-consuming but i found the main issue to be Windows configuration. Joining the domain, renaming the computer etc. But this is because i need to spend more time getting it scripted. Using Deploy Studio and leveraging OS X Server's net boot service can make deployment very quick. If you only need to deploy OS X then your way out front. Deploy Studio can rename accounts based on the computer name you give to the machines mac-address when you add them to the deploy studio console. You can create different computer groups giving you complete control over what you want to rename the set of machines. Also you can create workflows assigned individually to each computer group, giving you flexibility over how each workflow is used. For example i have 2 computer groups, 1 ICT Suite, 1 Mobile trolley. I have ICT-Suite-01-15 assigned for the machines in this group and Macbook-01-15 assigned for the macbook trolley group. I have created 2 workflows. One assigned to the ICT Suite group and 1 to the Mobile trolley group. The first workflow has the partition tool, format tool, re-image tool and bind tool. These run automated one after the other. The partition for the ICT Suite group is 100Gb (OS X) and 40Gb (Windows). I can copy this workflow and create the 2nd for the mobile trolley and change the setting for the partition creation to 40gb and 40gb. I can also change the default images to deploy. So the ICT image i created i can deploy to the ICT Suite group and the mobile trolley image to the mobile trolley. These are examples but in all honesty the whole process once you have got it up and running is not that long. I did a suite of 32 in around 1 hour IIRC, All bound and name changed. Hope this helps.

You could also lock the keychain and then change the admin password. This results in the 2 passwords (one to login and one to open the keychain) to be different. So even if they hack the local admin account, they shouldn't be able to access the keychain.

Hold down the apple key and drag the icon off the menu bar. This is the same as removing the tick in 'display in menu bar.'

If you have a valid license for activ primary 3, download activ inspire. This has both the studio and activ primary 3 and you can switch between them as you want (requires restart of app though).

Does anyone know where this data is stored? I may be able to get some assistance on reading the data directly from the database itself and create the file that way, unless someone has another way to skin this particular cat. @dhicks, Would you be able to share the script? I'm not really in the need for the groups myself

Hello all, I'm not really sure if this is one for your guys as it's more of an administration thing really. What i am wanting to do is design a report in SIMS.net which will run every night/morning checking for new admitted Pupils. The report would extract these pupils into a .CSV file which in turn would be used to create their accounts in the AD for them to log in. I have looked at designing a report but it doesn't seem to have the flexibility i need to create the reports on the fly without prompts. I want to be able to specify the current date for each day and have it return the admitted pupils for that day, therefore giving me the new users each time if there are any. It seems to only allow me to choose on prompt. Does Sims. net have the power that i need to create such a task? I also need it to be able to overwrite the .csv file each time the report is run without being asked. Hope you can help. Thanks.

I think it would be a cron job, but this has move over to launchd now? I use ARD as well and have WGM set up to tunr the machines on each week day at 8am.

Hello all, I have a laptop trolley which currently has a Colour Laser printer attached to it. The problem is when this printer gets disconnected it goes offline at the server end and then when re-attached it doesn't come back online until i manually restart the Spooler service. Now i was looking at an alternative setup. Each classroom now has a mono laser. I was wondering how i could get the laptops to print to these printers depending on which room the trolley is in. So say one room is called G01 and the laptop trolley rolls in. How could i get the laptops to print to G01-laser-printer, and to G02-laser-printer when it rolls into classroom G02. Sorry for the longish description. Just couldn't find the right words to describe it so a hundred would do Oh and this is a Primary School so it does need to be a relatively simple process. TIA.

Have a look at the AD-OD integration stuff in the mac section. It has a vbs script that will add the user from a CSV file which will populate the password field, the home dir field, the letter mapped to their home dir and also populate their home dir with a documents folder. It will also create the users in the OU that you specify. It's quite a good script. You will need to create the Home Dir share manually but there is a wiki entry on this site for that, whether using mandatory or roaming profiles. Search for profiles in the Wiki section to get what you need.

i Have noticed the same thing. I thought that maybe it was just something that i myself had caused when setting up the users home dirs since they had their own dock plist file inside their preferences IIRC. But then the setting should override this. I will look into this again on Monday.
