Disconnect the monitor and start up the mac mini. Go for a coffee whilst waiting for it to get to the login window. IIRC you will also need to login without visual aid. If you have username and password fields then its easy to do. The other way would be to use ARD to log in remotely. Once logged in i think if you re-connect the display it *should* detect the display. Failing that use ARD to remove the plist file. Which one it is i have no idea

You could use 2 APs. Split the net-books down the middle and join half to one AP and the other half to the second AP. Or get an 802.11n WAP. Apparently 802.11n WAPs can support more concurrent connections

The other point is having staff install stuff like lime-wire etc and downloading shed loads of stuff inc. the associated viruses and then bringing them all into the School's network. Where do we stand on software that is unlicensed as well as downloaded and illegal music.

Having added this to a registry on one machine i can say it didn't make a blind bit of difference. I'm not too sure as to what the setting does but it didn't change anything in the start up process. It stated that it was preparing network connections for a while (which seemed about as long as before) and then said applying computer settings but as soon as it came up it disappeared. Also one big note; the machines still say domain unavailable even when at the login window, if you try and log in too quick. I have only seen this when usually on a wireless network. Not with a 1gb network connection with cat6 from end to end. Still not deploying deployed apps.Tested the same deployment on the white intel-based machines. Deployed on second boot as soon as i ran the gpupdate /force and restarted them. so it is definitely something to do with the nvidia stuff. One note also worth mentioning is also the OS X partition has similar issues in that it can take some time to pick up an IP address and also drops connections to the network and as DMcCoy knows all to well this can have disastrous results for network-based home accounts if disconnected for too long. All in all i'm not too impressed with my new machines I may call Apple and see what they say about the issue.

I could do with a few of those to if you have any spare ones left ? USB to PS2 that is. I need them for a usb keyboard and mouse onto a KVM. Do they even work? for a KVM that is.

Am i wrong in thinking that if you upgrade either xp or the server then you also look to upgrade the cals to connect to the newer server/from the newer client. I'm sure i read that somewhere or dreaming of MS rip-off schemes

Hmm I got this error very recently but so much has gone on since I can't quite recall... IIRC I had to change the type to redirect all users to the same location and then set the folder redirection location. I use \\servername\homeshare$\%username%\mydocs I'm not too sure what the grant exclusive rights needs to be. I think this can be enabled for my docs redirection but not for desktop and start menu.

I wish I could tell you mate. We have been paying forit since June and have yet to install it since we can't get a 2nd ip address on the server. We currently have our website running on said server through apples apache, but StudyWiz install their own apache since they customise it so heavily. Due to this we need the seond IP to point to that that version which has yet to be done . As soon as it is up and running I will create an account for you to have a look at it if you want. Interestingly though it is the only vle provider that would allow us to host the system on our own server resulting in the cost per annum to come down considerably.

I looked at dokeos when I was in search of our vle. It was ok but lacked some of the modules that can be found formoodle. I also looked at drupal-ed. This one was good in it's theming ability but at the time but again lacked the modules. In the end we decided to put our Xserve to work and went with StudyWiz.

It gets to a point where the more you learn results in the more that breaks and you end up fixing because of your new-found knowledge. It's quite amazing though just how many of us wanted to do something else before IT. It might be interesting to have a poll about how many of us went into ICT as a last resort.

I was actually pondering this over the last 7 - 8 weeks. I was so fed up with bashing my head against stuff that just refused to work. I thought there has to be something else more full-filling. I would love to be a surgeon. If i had the cash to burn i would try to put myself through med school and perhaps GCSEs, a level, degree before that . I also thought fireman as well. I am quite an active person although i don't do any fitness or nothing. I can't do stuff for doings sake like that. There needs to be a reason (i suppose health would be one). Its just age that concerns me (I'm 31). I didn't do too well at school and so would perhaps need to resit for most things. Make me think maybe i am lucky to be where i am currently

Censornet? It's a squid/dansguardian but in a pre-built fashion. Not sure if it's still a no-go or if its just self-compiled stuff you were referring to. There was mention of v4 being made open source. Not sure if thats happened yet though.

I think we're forgetting that these are iMacs Oh god why oh why oh why? If it ain't broke don't fix it!!! This sounds very similar to what i have noticed. DHCP takes an absolute age to obtain an IP address and can often time out before it does. Re-connection of the cable does have an immediate effect though I think i may be ever so slightly screwed in this one I did read a support item on MS website about removing DHCPSensing but this had no real effect. It may help with the issue on the RM ones though, but to be honest the NVidia chipset may just be real crap.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone else is using the new education imacs for Windows use. If so are they having problems with Group policy or does it seem to work fine? It is only really apparent when trying to deploy Software using GPO. It looks like the Network card doesn't start in time when the client polls for the software to be deployed. I had this issue with the White intel ones but this was just a case of disconnecting the network cable for 10 seconds and then re-connecting it again. I have tried this but it fails to make any difference. It works for the time while it is logged in but after a restart it fails again. I can confirm this by running rsop.msc from start > run and it comes up with a exclamation mark waiting for software to deploy but needing a restart. Before this it was a red X stating the specified domain could not be found. Any ideas?? TIA

So i have managed to resolve my logging in issue. I was trying to resolve an issue with iWork taking an age to start and thought it to be perhaps a filtering issue. I found this not to be the case since another site was using the same proxy address and software with ni issues. I thought maybe firewall issue... It turns out that it was neither. I used my router's IP for the forwarding DNS server in the AD. Although the Internet was working and DNS working fine internally, it was causing issues with iWork not being able to resolve properly. Once the Forwarding DNS Server was corrected iWork worked fine. Strangely though my login problem also disappeared. I'm not too sure why a forwarding DNS IP would cause problems with an internal logging lookup and client logging in but there you go. All seems Ok and pretty quick now again. Thanks for your help everyone. Most appreciated.

OS X Server 10.5.8 v1.1 has been released which again says it will fix the issue with regards to the serial number and multi-homed servers

I do this as part of the deploystudio imaging process. No scripting needed, just tick a few boxes and enter a few details This suits me well @MatthewL Do you use the joindomainorworkgroup for this? If so have you got an example that you could share of the script you use?

I'm not to sure about disabling netbios. I'm not sure whether it would a, break anything or b, resolve the issue with regards the shares. Because all users can access them they are mounted using Kerberos from the side bar. Ironic that the only servers you can mount via Kerberos using the side bars is ad ones. yes I will be seeing you on the 4th sept. I have placed an order for snow leopard client and server to see how it goes as well I have managed to get the users logging in but finder still seems slow but that's another thread. I have tried creating an OD User and created a sharepoint for his home dir on the os drive. I set the share up so everyone had read/write access and full control over the share. I propagated the permissions and created the users home folder. I logged in and still finder took an age to load.

Good evening, I was just wondering if anyone has used the JoinDomainOrWorkgroup function/command. I am looking at it for a possible method to script my XP partitions to join the AD after being re-imaged. I thought a script to lookup the active hardware/mac address and finding the corresponding Hostname, renaming the machine using this looked up hostname and then joining the AD. Has anyone got an example and possibly a description of what each bit does? This should be good if i can get it to work. Would be a fully deployed XP/OS X machine from bare-metal to fully up and running. TIA
