10.5.8 kerberos printing to Windows print queues still doesn't work. I'm not sure of 10.6 but wouldn't hold my breath. To get it working you will need to download and install the following: http://www.deploystudio.com/Downloads/ksmbprintd_v1.1.dmg Follow the guide on how to get the queues set up. In a nutshell, go to Printers and add new printer. Customise the tool bar and add the advanced option. Click on advanced option and then choose the Windows printer via SAMBA with kerberos support v1.0 Fill in the boxes and choose your driver. This should then work providing the driver is correct. But of course if you don't need kerberos printing then ignore all of this

we used to have Winsuite here. I removed everything when i first started and rebuilt the lot from ground up. Treating kids like their dense doesn't help. Kids will learn what they need to learn to get to what they want to do. It's staff that hold them back. We have kids in Reception that can login. They have to type in their username and password and these are built using their firstname, first letter of their lastname and a number which is based on their age when they first started at this school. Admittedly not all of them can do it but it's good typing practise anyway. Get's them used to finding the letters on the keyboard and matching them up with actual letters (they have their logins on a name card that they take to the ICT room). Hope this helps.

This isn't entirely a fair point. Apple have to abide by the publishers T&C's, and because of the massive market share that iTunes has, they tend to get a raw deal. The publishers make it hard for Apple to sell DRM-free items on iTunes as they gave rights to Amazon and the likes first before allowing Apple to sell them DRM-free. Of course it doesn't help that Apple themselves out-price them from the market. One thing i would never do though is buy videos from iTunes. Bought one, never again! This is exactly what i would say. I don't mind the iPad it could be good at what it does, and looks alright. Not quite what i was wanting but then that's me. I just iterate that the laptops for teachers scheme ended years ago and if staff need a laptop for their work, then the School is not obliged to get them one. If you've ever used a mac and flash then you would understand a little as to why Apple have done this. There rumors going around that Steve Jobs had a Q&A discussion after the iPad launch where he basically called Adobe lazy. And in all fairness, they are. Their coding is shoddy at best when it comes to the flash plugin on OS X. Even v10 is pretty dire and that's an improvement over v9. Watching iPlayer or anything using Flash video and all you can hear if you don't have headphones in are the fans at constant velocity almost making my Macbook pro take off. It would feel more at home on a runway But the internet is so heavily reliant on flash now that its a sorry state that you can't browse sites unless you have the plugin. On the plus side though at least you don't see all those annoying ads. Pro's and con's

What we try to do is this. Any software that will not run properly under xp because it's too old gets left out. We then look to replace or upgrade. This isn't an option for most primary schools but IMO should be looked at. Quite a few applications now tend to just be exe clients that run a .swf file off the server. I have recently looked at getting 2 pieces of software that aren't compatible with OS X running fine just launching the .swf under the Flash player. But the main reason for the upgrading of software is that all School's IIRC should have a VLE/MLE up and running by 2010. If you look at new software the licenses should cover some software to run in the VLE, thus providing content for your school, killing 2 birds with 1 stone as it were. This is what we are trying to do. After all what's the point in struggling along with software that doesn't work correctly on modern OSes? I think OS chice is irrelevant now since most/all app access will be done online.

Can you recall what the plugins called? I will look into the robots.txt, although it's just the edugeek projects template. Not much else has changed

Well, since i started this thread and tried a few of the responses (haven't tried all of them due to time) my site still doesn't show up at all. I tried the site: prefix as mentioned by ajb and it shows that a plugin has been crawled. Thats it. I think i need to create a site map. I will continue on with this. Thanks for all the replies though.

Are you going to be using the same clients on this new network? If so you may be able to set up and configure RIS on the 2nd DC and create an image of one of the clients (if they are mostly the same type). You can then deploy your new image, just the way you want it but also utilise the image after the infrastructure is rebuilt since the image will still be current. This would also alleviate potential viruses (you mentioned AV being out of date) on the clients and bring your clients machines bang up to date with updates, but should also remove the duplicate SIDs. Pre-Stage the machines and the naming will also be sorted.

I personally looked into creating a Wiki based intranet. The main reason was that the Staff could then be responsible for adding the content instead of me. They could create articles based on the topic they were doing. Since our school has a year split across 2 or 3 classes it made sense. Then each member of staff could 'add' their links and stuff that they use for the benefit of the other groups. Also it made it easy for the kids to access resources online since they didn't have to type them in. Unfortunately the weakest link in this resource was the Staff. They never used it, like most things set up here.

Since my site runs on the Joomla Edugeek template (also thanks) I'm not entirely sure as to how to go about some of the things mentioned. Such as validation. It looks like there is an issue with scriptegrators highslide plugin for it's webgallery. But how would i resolve this as it's a module/plugin? PS. How would i make my url in my sig clickable? Is it just one macbook or multiples of? If you have a fair few to do it may be worth looking in to investing in a Mac mini and a copy of OS X Server. 10.6 is a pretty good buy. Then what you invest in is a platform which can leverage Net-Booting. Couple this with Deploy Studio (which in itself is relatively easy to set up and configure) gives you a scalable method for capturing images and deploying them. This is the method I would recommend personally.

i assume that you have more than mac clients than just the xserve. Try running the server admin tools on one of the clients. See if the same happens. You may also wish to invest in a client for admin purposes if you don't already have one. This makes managing the clients using WGM a whole lot easier as i have had trouble managing print queues directly on the server itself. I also think that this is a DNS issue. See what happens when you run the command: Host fqdn.server.com and: host IP of server These should come back with the correct results which are the same as the DNS entries. To be honest though if you have an AD DNS server, use this for your DNS as Apple's implementation can be troublesome. Also is the Xserve only running as an Open Directory Master? Or has it been joined to an AD infrastructure also? The screen grab: Windows key, Shift + 4, or alternatively use the grab utility found in the utils folder.

I don't understand what the fuss is about really. I didn't catch the jobs thread that everyone is talking about. But i would like to mention one thing. When your in the Job centre, reading through the jobs pages in the paper, do you all stop and read each advert, and if you find something that you don't agree with, then start ranting for eternity about these things? Me? i just skip over it to the next one, and so on until I find one that suits me best and i like. It should be the same on here, and any other jobs advert website. To summarise, see something that you don't like in a job advert? Don't take it like they set out to hurt you directly, just move on to the next advert. No need to get aggressive, nasty or feel the need to make a vicious comment. In fact no real need to make a comment at all. Oh, and please don't hurt me

They're probably not going to. They will most likely look to HTML 5 to bring the video standard instead Flash. Apple seem to have already stated their position by leaving it out of their platform for so long. Adobe's Flash app for the OS X platform is well under par compared to Windows. Each time i watch anything flash based on my macbook pro the fans ramp up.

You can choose to set your http proxy to either manual or automatic on an iPhone that is.

I did want a full digital connection but this will have to do. Oh, and i also run OS X server 10.6 on my mac mini as well as a media centre. So it has many jobs and does them in almost silence. Never hear peep from it. It's like having a well-behaved child that just gets on with it And my servers been up over a year now, very solid too.

Yeah. It worked fine. I didn't connect the audio to a surround sound centre though as i don't have one...yet. From Apple's site: I have the intel core 2 duo mac mini with intel gma 950 graphics and output 1080p to a 40" samsung series 6. I run iTunes and use my iphone with the remote app to play content. Worked really well. Just need to tweak to prefs to start movies full-screen automatically and you don't really need a mouse/keyboard. And i agree with the EyeTV. I just wanted something i could connect my virgin TV to though

Yep. It is.I used to run my mac-mini over DVI to HDMI. The mac-mini also has a digital optical out as well (i think) which allows connection straight into a surround sound system.
