Hello all, My day has started off pretty badly. I have been having networking issues on and off now for a while. It seems as though there is a broadcast storm happening which cripples the network. I have enabled the STP protocol but this doesn't seem to do anything. All the switches seem to be affected but restarting the switch with the servers connected generally resolves the issue. I'm not entirely sure what I need to look for and where to start troubleshooting an issue like this. My switches are SRW2048 switches. I have a number of things I could enable but not sure what they are and how they would affect the network. For example Flow control is currently off for all ports. Should i enable this. The STP setting has a few options as well. Which one is the right option? Hope someone can help me with this. It's driving me nuts! Thanks.

Right. I found some old RAM 512MB. The 256MB is onboard so thats a bit better. The machine is now up to 736MB. However the Nelson Handwriting is still slow to catch up with the writing. The pen is already past the first curly 'C' and the pen is just starting the draw the red line. I have found some updates on the RM website that I can apply. If i had a floppy drive that is

Thanks for all the ideas. It's quite interesting how many people have these knocking around. The nelson handwriting problem was basically the tablet couldn't keep up with the drawing on the screen. RAM may well speed things up a bit but i don't think I would have that type of RAM around here and don't think it would be worth upgrading it just to use 1 piece of software, although I do think it could be good in Nursery/Reception. I also did think of using it for the booking system and even Staff webmail Access. I was thinking of having a 'floating' device in the staffroom that can be passed around. The trouble is keeping it charged up and on. I was thinking a iPad for these roles as well as if it like the iPhone it will be in an always on state making it quick and easy to use. The VNC one is interesting as we currently have a projector in the Hall using just a wall so lacking interactivity. I will see what RAM it takes and see if I can find some. I will know then what options I have. PS. I currently use MRBS for my room booking system. I am thinking about how to make it easier to use on a touch interface. Any ideas? Hello, We have about 5-6 old Centrino 900MHz Tablet PCs. I'm struggling to find something to do with them. I thought about using them as an aid to help pupils with writing skills. Unfortunately it seems they can't even run a simple application (Nelson handwriting?) which is flash-based. Even browsing is slow. So, any ideas what can we do with them?

Hmm. What was wrong with the Tosh? If the board has been replaced and the nic is onboard then the mac address would surely change. If the WDS is set to only respond to known clients then maybe you need to pre-stage the tosh laptop. This puts the machine in the AD already and then the client is known. It should then pick up the image and rename the client according to what is in the AD. I may be barking up the wrong tree though. Not used WDS /RIS in years. It's the only thing i can think of since you say you haven't changed anything and nothing else has been tinkered with.

Have you looked at this? AFP548 - Record Augmentation - Part 1 - The Cylinder of Destiny can you confirm that you can see the augments using the DSCL command. In all honesty I tried to get the IMHandle one working before but couldn't get it working so I left it and never went back to it. If you are successful perhaps you could post a write up on just how you did it. Would love to see an example working. Unlike mine Also I'm not sure that the createhomedir command works against AD users. Unsure as to whether the augment will make this work. If I understand correctly the augments only come into play when a user is logging in. As you would probably be using the creahomedir on the OD server I don't think the records would be merged together. If you are trying to created the Home dirs for AD users, i found the best way was to extract the user list using the DSCL command in terminal. Then using this list to script the creation process. The only downside to this is you can't query the groups and get a list of users inside those groups. Unfortunately it's all at once or nothing. Hope this helps.

Maybe try re-installing the OS from the DVD /cd drive to see if this helps one of the clients. After re-install try binding this machine. Also update your Deploy Studio and then try again. It does however say that you should re-build the image /.NBI for the latest version though. Maybe try rebuilding the Client and then imaging that machine once built? Just a few things to try. As you can probably guess, I do suspect that the re-imaging is a possible problem. I have seen a few things that have been a little strange after imaging and all related to Directory Binding (macbooks losing the OD bind after restart on the same 3 machines.Exactly the same image). At least we can remove another potential cuplrit.

How have you deployed these machines? Did you use deploystudio? If so take one of the machines that is behaving badly and re-image it. I've had a few where the Directory Services hasn't quite bound properly during the restore process.

You may just need to open up the correct ports from MS remote desktop. Its all that i can think of. I can't think of any other reason why a firewall would block a connection other than rules. You could take a look at this http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/rdfaq.mspx

Do I dare mention iMac?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me any idea if I'm doing something wrong or if indeed the icons have disappeared for the admin settings. I have some white folder icons and when opened, just black dots (bullet points). I'm sure there use to be some small basic icons. I have read that the admin tree is now theme-able. I look in the pix folder in the root moodle folder and theres nothing in there. I have changed themes but cannot find anything in there either. I downloaded 1.8.9 and that has icons in the root pix folder but cannot get it to install. I tried copying the pix folder into my 1.9.8 install but that didn't do anything either. What am I missing? Do they now HAVE to go into the themes themselves? I don't think they had to before. Hope you can help. I'm beginning to lose hair.

i Think the trash folder/file is hidden. You may just need to make it visible to delete the .trash folder. There is a command for terminal that can do this for you. Or you can get an application that does the same thing. I've never done this on the Server before though. Once example: Apple - Downloads - UNIX & Open Source - Change Finder You could then crete a script that deleted the users' .Trash file from each of their Home dirs. You could probably do this bit with out the first bit though

I think teachers get paid adequately for what they do. They have PPA so they can have time during the working week to get planning and preparation done. Could you say the same about ICT Technicians/Managers/Network Managers? The boss even had to stop the staff going home to do it as instead of doing the planning, preparation, they went shopping.

Hmm. Interesting. How do you know this? Have you seen it in action or used it? Just curious as to how you come by this information. It would indeed make things more difficult.

I would consult the logs. If it is time skew it will state in the logs. If it is pre-auth it will also mention it in the logs. It could just be that they take a little longer to connect than the others. Also what type of machines are they? Edu iMacs, standard off the shelf iMacs, Mac pros? Also are they dual-booted? If so you could check to find out what network chipsets are used in Windows. Apple's System profiler doesn't give you this info as far as i know. The reason i ask (and i keep mentioning this each time i hear of these issues) is that the Nvidia chipsets can take longer than usual to find the domain.

I've just been seriously thinking about your proposal while ready the thread. It's an interesting one. Users can backup their iPads using their home machine via iTunes. Data can be encrypted through the use of enterprise encryption when iPhone OS 4.0 arrives. Deployment is supposed to be easier as well, by allowing deployment of iPads over wifi connections. All good points to consider. You could even opt to get the Keyboard with Dock connector, thus removing the potential to lose the keyboard. There is also a camera connection to allow import of photos from School cameras and a VGA adaptor to allow the iPad to connect to School projectors (with a supported res of 1024x768). Now the negative points. There would need to be a iPad version of whatever software they use to create IWB flip-charts for use in School. Whether this be Promethean or Smart. Now, Promethean/Smart could be at an advantage here if they utilised an adaptor and released an iPad app to create the flip-charts. The only downside to this is that they couldn't utilise SWF based resources ( are you reading this promethean ) This i think is going to be the hardest point to make positive, the lack of software support that is used in the classroom. Access to files and saving out of the iPad isn't really an issue i don't think, as you could potentially export over wifi and save to the VLE. We use Studywiz that already has a mobile app that supports iTouch and iPhone so already works with the iPad. You also have keynote and pages on the iPad for productivity in that sense. But on the whole. Very interesting. I was thinking about getting myself one. I may just do that now and see how i fair with it. @AngryTechnician, What did you use for your surveys? LimeSurvey? Great piece of Opensource software. If you did how do you go about creating conditional questions?

There is a specific way to get the time to sync correctly in OS X Server. I will see if i can find a link that outlines the process. My OS X Server was always drifting. In the end i decided to look into it and found a doc on Apple's site i think it was.

What you could do is have the Home dirs stored on the Windows servers and then have a storage solution for the OS X Server to provide a video storage location for the video files. You also need to take into account that if they are copying the files down and then saving them back up when complete you have the wait time of copying files backwards and forwards as GrumbleDook mentioned. Also take into account that if these files are going to be large then times that by each user doing the same. Eg, Each pupil would be logging on at the same time, locating their files and downloading them all at the same time to work on. This will increase the time each user will have to wait. One option could be Final cut server, if Final cut is the software you are looking at using. The guys at our local CLC have started to use this as it does exactly this for them. Pupils work off the files stored on the server but Final Cut downloads a low-res version onto the client for working on. Once all edits are made and saved the XML file is then sent back to the Final cut server where the high-res version is updated with the changes. I think that's right You could TRY this. Not sure if it would work though. Have the users log in from the Windows server for their profile but have a login re-direct for the Movies folder to the X-Serve. Not sure if this would work though. Would be interesting to try

@Synack, I agree with what you say about the Eu. It is somewhat unfair. While i see the point with what that they are doing or trying to restrict, it restricts just what MS can do for the end-user. Apple have proven this with the integration of their software. @mbrunt, What would you consider a real OS? I'm curious. I consider a real OS one that lets you get on with the tasks at hand. That doesn't get in the way. IMO a real OS should never really be noticed. And i do think in some instances our kids can produce work at a quicker pace. E.g in Pages they don't have to mess about with the formatting of the images on the page just to stop text from going all over the place. You could argue that these are things that should be taught. But does word 2007 still do this (honestly, I've no idea. I've never used it ).? Also in some aspects having a simple interface to work with can help. A simple Finder, for example can assist in the younger children in developing their skills without the risk of damaging an install of the OS. We don't just cater for kids aged between 7-10 or whatever year 5 and 6 are. We have to cater right from Nursery level up to year 6. This has its own problems. @GrumbleDook, I agree with what you saying with regards to how the software/hardware is used by teachers. Surely having options/alternatives is also a good thing. There's some good Windows only software and some good Mac only software. Also some Windows only software can work on macs too, if they're tweaked a bit
