You can run WGM from a 10.6 client and still manage the 10.5 clients from the same machine. You don't need 2 separate machines to do this. The only thing that would change is if there are any differences between the 2 clients. i.e. dir util being moved.

Yep. Your 10.5 Server won't pull down the 10.6 updates. My Advice? Upgrade your server if you can. I recently upgraded mine and the server generally behaves better than it did on 10.5.8. Also now 64 bit which allows it to utilise more RAM and more threads (important for AFP). The cost for an unlimited client version of OS X Server 10.6 run us to the tune of .... £179

You cannot install a version of OS X that precedes new machines. The drivers (usually Graphics) are not on the CD/DVD for the newer hardware. OS X requires these drivers to allow it to boot into the GUI required for install. You can image a machine with an earlier version, but only if the image has been updated to the latest build. This usually has the newer drivers added (usually as part of a .x increment). Since the airport hardware is the same there should be no issues with this. Not sure about the nvidia drivers for though. Although it shouldn't be an issue as that is what i have done here. I run the (alu edu) imacs using 10.5.8 connected and managed to the OD and AD.

Download the trials of each and see which one you like best. Don't forget VirtualBox Also you can use Boot Camp.

What is the laptop sitting on? If you are using it on your lap, make sure that the vent at the rear is not covered. The vent for the airflow goes right across the back of the macbook pro where the screen hinges. Anything blocking this vent can result in increased heat. Also if you use it on a material such as a duvet or blanket then it can act as an insulator. Apple tend to use the body of the laptops as a sort of passive heatsink i think. Seems to get hot enough to feel that way. And if you do anything using flash that will ramp up the fans and make your macbook pro fry. Youtube especially. I have never managed to get used to the glass trackpad myself. The trackpad may also need to wear in a little too. My other halfs was quite stiff at first.

 & T for new tabs in safari. Most other Windows shortcuts work as well i.e.  and tab key allows you to cycle through the open applications. To enable sharing for Windows users you need to enable the SMB option. System Prefs >Sharing >File Sharing >Options >Share files and folders using SMB (Windows) But you may know this already. Also take a look at the tutorials for XCode. They may point you in the right direction. Also you may want to set up Spaces and Expose to allow for easier use if using just one screen. (virtual desktops like Linux)

Is the curl -s wrapped or is that a carriage return? If a carriage return then would that cause an issue? Other than that I'm not sure. Maybe you could try the crontab command on the command line.

@ BootManager, So which aspects of the DNS rebuild did the trick. Perhaps a summary of what you did (as opposed to the massive post you made. Some may not want to read it all. ) might help. I for one am curious as to what you did try in the end and what was successful. Did you use reserved DNS entries coupled with reserved DHCP addresses?

Could this be done using WGM? Try adding the plist to the list of managed prefs and see what happens.

We are an all-mac school. Our Admin Staff also have iMacs on their desks, although as mentioned they need to use Windows on them due to SIMS and FMS requiring it. The class-rooms do currently have Windows running on them but with access to SIMS via the web browser this may not be the case anymore. I am just going through the process of finding out what software is needed on the Windows side and see if there is a web-based version or an alternative. The back-end though still has an AD system along with an integrated OD.

I forgot to update this thread. I eventually found an NVidia chipset update that is separate from Apple's Bootcamp drivers. I manually updated each client. As each client was updated the Software deployment from the GPO applied successfully and software was deployed. The drivers in Apple's Bootcamp seem to be out of date. Therefore i recommend updating these drivers as soon as you install XP, to alleviate any potential issues. The driver I downloaded and installed was: Nvidia NForce update 73.1.0.0 I thin kthe version installed using the bootcamp drivers was 71.x.x.x or something like that. But I will check the new drivers anyway to see if they have been updated again.

I use googlemail for my mail and calendar. Accessible on macs at home and on phone. Not fantastic though. Could integrate a little better. If she doesn't use mobile me there are rumours that it might be made free. Perhaps 7th June? Also if you have exchange, thats probably the best solution. Works quite well with ical from what i've seen of it.

IMO when training is given, it is given as general information. Only when you use the products in your environment do you realise that some things just weren't covered that you did need to know about. Training cannot cover every eventuality, but is there only to provide the basic understanding of something or a process. So even after being trained on a product you may find yourself coming up short on certain things, which will usually result in searching the web for answers or asking in forums such as these. Isn't this one of the reasons the Internet has become so useful, especially for IT guys? If people think that by having training on a product means they know every little nook and cranny of it, then I think they too are being a little naive. Sometimes you just have to figure things out for yourself (with a little help from your friends )

I must say I'm a little confused about your comment. How does this make things easier? Surely if you don't want to deploy a package but still want to mirror it, you just disable that update on the software update server. You don't have to update the clients with the updates that your server has. You can choose which ones to deploy. Also once on your own SUS server you can deploy to clients a lot faster than you would be able to download them. Even if it is only once. You could also stop the clients asking for the updates by unticking check for updates. Or am I missing something? If so then please help clarify things for me. You may very well be onto something.

Where in the Users home dirs is the trash found? If they are at the root of the users' home dirs then perhaps something like rm /UserHomeShare/*/.Trash The * is used to replace the user name. It should traverse each account listed in the homeshare and then delete the .trash file in each user home dir. Make a back up first though. You could maybe test the process with a separate share with a copy of home dirs in side.

If you have a 10.6 (I think it is also in 10.5) OS X Server then you can disable the guest account for machines through WGM. Just go to the preferences for a computer list and apply the setting inside the login option. This obviously assumes that you have your machines added to the OD (not necessarily bound) and in computer lists.

There is a tips and tricks document found somewhere on the AFP548 website. IIRC in the back of this was a whole list of unix commands that are useful for ARD. You could get the commands by listing the man pages but you need to know the command first. ARD coupled with the Unix commands is a very powerful tool for remote administration. Learn a bit of terminal and then you are pretty much unlimited to what can be done from ARD. Also have a watch of the terminal tips video in the link I posted in the other thread. Right. You will need to do a bit of tinkering first. Remotely log into all the clients as the local admin. Then use ARD to set the proxy settings (there is a command in the templates section in ARD) and also specify the excluded addresses if you need to for your update server. Now this is done check to make sure that this account can see your server (run software update manually). If so good. Then log out. Then using ARD you can do a number of things. I tend to just run softwareupdate -i -a. You need to specify the admin user when running the command. This will list the updates for each machine and then download then and install them without any manual intervention. You should be able to all of the updates remotely without ever having to visit client. Occasionally though you may get some issues with some clients. This how i set mine up.

If your Mac Pros are less than 1 year old then give Apple a call. you could also try to play the source files (iMovie event folder in the Movies folder) directly in Quicktime to see if they are indeed skipping or if it is just iMovie causing the issue.

I would obtain one of these mac pros and then rebuild the OS and applications from scratch. Don't re-image if that's how you deploy as the issue may be with the image/imaging process. Then test again. This will check to see if it is indeed an OS/app issue.

What's the setup? are they networked accounts? Local accounts? versions all up to date? What differences are there between the versions on your macbook and the mac pros. Also make sure that all the firmware updates on the Mac pro's have been done.

You are correct. Even the Apple docs as far as I'm aware don't cover everything fully enough to get a complete overview. However, there is perhaps a very little known section of Apple's site that does have some good tutorial stuff. I do like to watch them myself from time to time.
