it sounds like you have ad users logging in but have force local home dir. This means that each ad user will have a local home dir which will mean they will have to choose to save to the network location. The way i got round this was to use synching on log out and background synching if needed. But i only did this on the heads machine since he was the only one using parallels.

Hmmm. It's a tough one. I currently have the 3g iPhone. Not 3Gs. The difference is quite a big one. This is the speed. The 3G gets quite sluggish at times and annoys me now and again. But i have never used the Pre so cannot compare this point. The biggest advantage for me with regards the iPhone is the app store. Having had a Hp PDA, Acer PDA x 2, it irritated me no end having to keep finding the apps to install, then installing them. This i think is where the iPhone is always going to do better than others unless they can come up with a better store. And now At and T have allowed VoIP on their network here's hoping that it will reach our shores.

I like iTalc. I have just started to roll it out across our machines. I like the fact that it doesn't actually use passwords to authenticate. It works quite well as well if the machine you are using it on (teacher station) is up to the task. A naff graphics card ain't gonna cut it to be honest. I once ran it on an integrated matrox g200 something on my HP server. It didn't work too well though. I have since put it on an iMac with an Nvidia 9400 mobile chip and although the graphics card isn't still the greatest out there it does work reasonably well. I had around 40 machines on the screen at one time being monitored. It has quite a few tools in it too like most do. We had NetOp here before this and i think in comparison this is as good if not better than the version we had, v4 i think it was, although i also ran this on the HP server. The only downside to iTalc i found, unless someone can correct me and tell me how was the deployment of the client side app.

I moved from Symantec 10.2 to Endpoint 11 over the 6 weeks. I must admit it is actually not bad. It has stopped quite a few little things from spreading across to other clients from visitors USB drives. I haven't even configured anything and the IDEs get updated fine the client's AV all seems to be working Ok, and more or less right out the box. I have only had to deploy the client app to the clients. Overall i am quite impressed. The reporting pretty good too with easy to read results and also nicely laid out. It does require ISS to be installed though but i think it's worth the upgrade. Seems to be quite resource friendly as well.

Do they work with exchange 2003? Snow Leopard's exchange support is for 2007 + only. Not sure if the iPhone is earlier than that.

I can sync my mail and calendar. I just would like to be able to sync my to do list as well.

Unfortunately i won't have any control or say over the Apache install/configuration. The XServe has it's own Apache install and so the StudyWiz will be a 2nd install of apache. Quite how this will work I'm not sure of either. But, we will indeed have a 2nd domain name for the VLE and was going to use a 2nd IP for the SSL since Apache warns about virtual SSL domains. So we will have vle.eatonvalley.sandwell.sch.uk pointing to the 2nd IP address which will point to the 2nd Apache install on port 80. I can't see any real problems ???

Hello, I didn't know where to start this thread and if you read it you will understand why. I have an Xserve which currently serves our School Website (Welcome to Eaton Valley Primary School) running over our Joomla install. Now we were going to use this for our StudyWiz VLE installation as well. We have been told that this should be fine. I received an email today saying that they need a dedicated Server to run the StudyWiz on. They configure and run a customised Apache install on the Xserve. They have asked the following: So my question is, are they correct? Would there be a problem running 2 sites side by side on the same port number? I'm not too sure of this one.

I think you need your head looking at paying yet again to watch something. How many times do the UK customers have to pay to watch something? We pay TV license, then we pay to subscribe to the likes of Virgin/Sky, then we have to pay for pay to view TV on the subscribed TV, then we subscribe to our internet connection, only to pay for stuff that's being streamed across it???. Why? I wouldn't mind (wait, that's a lie) so much if i could even watch something on BBC iPlayer the following day after its been aired on a 10Mb connection without it constantly stopping.

Does ISA support Ident authentication. This is the way i went when using Safari with our School Guardian filtering. I found we had issues when using Safari with NTLM auth. It broke a fair few sites. I used the identd for OS X. There's a package install available for 10.4. This worked with 10.5 as well. This was with Leopard and Safari 3. Not too sure how Safari 4 fairs with NTLM auth. The identd works by passing the currently logged on Aqua user to the ident server. I was the only user to use it though since i never had the chance to deploy. We no longer run our School Guardian at the moment

Hello, I have started to migrate from my MobileMe to Googlemail. So far things have been so so. Apart from me accidentally erasing my calendar and thus missing an appointment for some training, its gone alright But one thing i would like is the synching of my to-dos from iCal onto the google Servers and then onto my iPhone. Does anyone know the best best way for this or has even done such a thing. The current method i have is a web part on my home screen which is ok, but requires internet access. This would be fine if the signal at our new school was even worth having So any ideas? Thanks.

I don't think os x utiise CALs. You just purchase either a 10 client or an unlimited client server license. Over here the unlimited license for 10.6 costs roughly around £250-£300. This would also allow you to take advantage of using Deploy Studio along with netinstall and deploy the images across the network. This works very well since you can also rename and bind the machines to the ad as part of the imaging process as well as deploy additional packages along the way.

IIRC OS X doesn't like the dollar on the end of shares. If i added them on the end then the shares wouldn't work. However i can't recall if this was a problem with SMB on OS X server or just OS X in general accessing SMB shares. If the netlogon and sysvol shares use $ then its irrelevant any way since these can be seen in OS X. So this would answer the question of if it is just OS X server's SMB and also render hiding shares as pointless, at least from the point of OS X anyway.

You could create a default template. What you would do is create a Local user (template) and then run all the apps and configure Finder and other items as how you would want them to look. Once this is done log out of the machine and log into the client as an admin user. Then you can run a command to copy the template user's Home dir into the default template of the machine itself. This is found at /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/ To make things a little easier at this point you could use the app Template. I used this myself and works well. But what i did for my users though is copied the template into their already created home dirs found on the OS X Server. I think though that the forced AD Local home picks up the systems default template. But if you have an iMac and it could be made available, then i would use that as your OS X Server to help manage the clients. It doesn't have to be an XServe and the Home dirs don't have to reside on an OS X AFP server as far as I'm aware.

I struggled to get my mac mini working at optimal res on a samsung 40" tv at 1080p. Until i read the instructions that is. For anyone out there you need to tell the tv which hdmi connection you wish to use for PC connection. This will then switch the PC channel over to this HDMi port and route the sound going into the red and white (RCA?) ports as well. My old man has his mac mini connected upto a 46 " samsung (both of these are series 6 by the way) using VGA. He has real trouoble getting his mini to detect the resolution all the time. I use DVI to HDMI and have had no problems. VGA apparently should also be auto-sensing but i don't think it works as well as DVI/HDMI. Zak, if you have 2 1080 options, one will be i and the 2nd p. I can't recall if it states the p .

I, personally would be using the iLife suite to create the content. Using the footage created by the kids could be a good way to show off their creative skills with the software that we have in school i.e. Stop motion animations etc. Hmm, it may have possibilities i suppose...

What did you use to create the digital signage, or how did you go about it? Our head has been in talks with life channel and i would like to have an alternative option to hand. There is a demonstration that i am attending on life channel and want to go in armed with as much information as possible although keeping an open mind. Is the content that they provide worth the additional cost over a standard digital signage system? Is the content easy enough to create? Is the content that you create limited by the system in place? Sorry for all the questions, just after some useful information about this Life channel. TIA

Hello, The Head was approached by a company called life channel. I think they approached him and not the other way around as far as i am aware although i may be wrong. Does anyone out there have this already and if so do you rate it would you rather have gone with a pure digital signage company. Apparently life channel stream content to you that is related to schools i.e. drugs awareness, knife crime etc. If you do have it and rate it what are the benefits. If you don't like the system, why is this? Also anyone out there with a digital signage installation, how is it paid for? Do you buy the system out-right a build your own content or do you pay an annual fee. Life Channel has a 3 year contract attached to it IIRC and it is £5000 per year. I thought that was quite expensive but apparently they do provide the screens. At the moment i am unsure if we keep the hardware after the 3 years. Personally i'm not quite sure about the life channel system and so was wondering if anyone has it who can share their experiences. It would be interesting for another digital signage deal for comparison though. Hope you can help. Thanks.

I may be able to help out with the HD version If you have a license for ilife 08 i think you are entitled to the HD download.

I will change my settings in WGM to use the full path. See if that sorts the itunes problem.

You could probably hack it onto the iBook but there are usually reasons why it won't run on those specced machines. I think for iMovie the reasons would be slow/sluggish use. HD 6 is just as good as 08, better in fact since the 08 version had all of the transitions/titling stuff removed. Only when 09 came out were they all put back in.

I have just re-visited this and have found that the above doesn't really matter. Yes, it matters if the slash is not added to the end but the main issue with sending out the ARD command to do the softwareupdate -i -a is that the clients need to have the bypass proxy domains set for the computer. Managing these settings using WGM for the computer groups does not work. You will have to manually add these settings to each machine. Luckily you can also do this using ARD Use the command networksetup -setproxybypassdomains "network-device being used" *.local 169.254/16 192.168.0.* *.your domain.name.com Replace network device being used with the device you wish to set the proxy settings for, the IP with your IP address range and the domain name with your own. Now you should be able to run the softwareupdate -i -a as root without each machine needing to be logged in and software updates done manually. You could also configure the softwareupdate -i -a to run as a schedule in ARD and then have automatic updates downloaded and installed. HOWEVER, i do have one strange issue. If i log in as an admin on a client and run software update it sees itunes 9.0. even though if i list the updates using root from ARD after i have just installed some updates, it sees nothing to install.
