Unfortunately, this has had no effect and students are still able to search YouTube through Classroom. Could this be because we have classroom.google.com in Custom Allowed Content?

We have HTTPS inspection on for YouTube. Google Classroom is part of our Custom Allowed Content category, which is set to Do Not Inspect, and we're worried about what might happen if we remove it from there.

Here's a tricky one - We've just seen that some students have discovered a way around our Smoothwall blanket block of YouTube using Google Classroom. Our policy is as such: - YouTube is set to Moderate Restricted Mode in Google Workspace. Users can watch restricted and approved videos. - Smoothwall blocks YouTube for students, EXCEPT for an allow list which allows students access to specific YouTube links only. This way, students cannot go to YouTube.com and start searching for videos - Videos must be sent to us by teachers and approved by us before students have access. The issue is this: The student will go into Google Classroom, to one of their classes. On the Stream tab, if posts can be made by students (which is by default ON in Google Classroom), they can click on "Add YouTube video" and then just start searching for YouTube videos. Moderate Restricted Mode still applies, so many of the videos are unapproved. However, this means our Smoothwall allow list is bypassed, as students can search for and click on videos that have not been added to the allow list in Smoothwall. We've found a setting in the Classroom settings that will disallow students from posting to the Stream tab and only allows comments, which disables the workaround. However, as far as we can see, there is no way to turn this off for all Classrooms, so the teachers would have to go through all of their Classrooms and switch this off manually. I realise now that I've probably posted this in the wrong place, so I apologise in advance - But since it involves Smoothwall, I thought I'd post it here. As this is the only way we can see to remove this bypass, does anyone know of a way to change this setting in Google Classroom en masse? I don't think we can rely on teachers to go through every single class they have on Google Classroom and switch the setting off. Thanks in advance!

Update to this, as the adapter arrived quite late and I've only just got around to testing it - When plugged in to a monitor, we get two black screens with a cursor that can move freely between the two! At this point, I think we have to chalk this Chromebook up as a loss. I can only think that it's a problem with the motherboard, or integrated graphics. The recovery screens must be baked in and they don't require integrated graphics, kind of like a motherboard's BIOS on a PC. I can't explain why the cursor is fine, though. I can't think of anything more to try. Thanks again everyone, hope you have a good half term break, or at least a nice long Jubilee weekend!

It's Hardspace: Shipbreaker full release day today! It's a sci-fi spaceship scrapping game, which I played a little bit in Early Access and enjoyed. I'll hopefully find some time to play it tonight.

Somehow, I managed to wrangle with ChromeVox long enough to get everything connected and (supposedly) onto the login screen - Unfortunately, the issue still persists. I've just disconnected the screen connector and plugged it back in while the Chromebook was on, but that hasn't changed anything. We ordered a USB-C to HDMI connector on Friday, which I think might be our last hope, so we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks again to all who has replied with ideas!

Unfortunately, yes!

Yes, the screen appears when in Recovery mode and during the powerwash/recovery process. Once this is done, the ChromeOS splash screen appears before returning to the black screen with a cursor. ChromeVox then starts talking as it would if you leave a Chromebook on the Welcome screen for a little bit. Unfortunately, it's out of warranty, too.

I'm not sure how to go about that, since it's a freshly recovered-from-USB device that isn't set up and, as such, isn't currently connected to the WiFi.

It doesn't have HDMI, and we don't have a means to convert USB-C to any kind of AV. That might be worth a try though!

The weird thing is, the Chromebook appears to be working under the black screen - You hear the ping sound that you get when you're turning on a Chromebook for the first time, and after 10 seconds, ChromeVox asks if we want to switch it on. The screen's backlight is working fine, but it just doesn't display the Welcome screen like normal.

We're on Leeds-57, and I'm not able to replicate the issue following those steps. Perhaps it could be something with the newer version? We also installed a new Smoothwall box recently, so I don't know if that makes a difference?

I can't remember the factions all that well, but I remember playing one skirmish against AI where I built walls, cannons and trebuchets, and had a dragon that I attacked with. Looking at the wiki, I think that was the Aramon faction?

We have a Pockethernet and a Netool tester. Pockethernet is much easier to use as you connect your phone to it using Bluetooth, and the app is very simple. Netool is good but it creates a WiFi hotspot instead, which isn't as simple, and the app's UI is a little more complex. We mainly use them to see which port on a switch the connection goes to, so I'm not sure how useful they might be for your issue.

I have tried Supreme Commander before, but it was a demo and I don't think I gave it a lot of time. Since it's cheap, I'll grab it - Thanks! I think I only ever played one C&C game, and I couldn't tell you which one it was...

Admittedly, I've never played against another person, but I still love it. I struggle with and get disappointed at newer RTS games in the same vein (looking at you, Planetary Annihilation) because I'm constantly comparing them back to TA. EDIT - I also have TA: Kingdoms, which I haven't played in a very long time. I might give that a go soon!

In this bridge period between big story games (since I don't want to commit to anything massive right now), I've been playing one of my favourite childhood games - Total Annihilation, an old school RTS game. It's 25 years old this year and it somehow still has a small semi-active community of players and modders. I've been installing various mods and it's re-invigorated my love for the game! GOG.com is just an amazing thing.

It's well worth playing if it piques your interest at all!

Admittedly, I played on a controller - Third person games feel weird to me using mouse and keyboard. God of War for PC is on my list to pick up when it's next on sale - I've never played one, but I watched a bit of it and I want to play it myself!
