Hi all, I normally go with intel processors (never had an AMD) but willing to mix things up a bit. I have been offered some new laptops with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor but have nothing (real world) to base it against. I have read up on the processor and it looks ok, it's obviously not the best or anything, but I wondered if there are any Edugeekers that have used them and can give me a little feedback.

Hi, I am currently isolating so cant go in to the school. I am trying to help a teacher fix her Smart interact TV from home :-( The teacher cant use the touch on her Smart interactive TV She said the sleep button is flashing red and the pens don't work either. She has tried a different laptop. I also asked her to remove the USB and plug it back in on her laptop. Any ideas?

I find that approach so clunky. Why not just let me do fancy text boxes etc while in the document, so I can see all the other page elements, just like slides.

So things like Text boxes and text with shadows are all possible in Slides but not in Docs. Drawing something like an arrow is simple in Slides but not in Docs. Even rotating a text box I can do in slides simply but not in docs. Am I missing a simple button to turn these features on in Docs or is there a big difference in features between the two.

Hi, I help setup a few Google Classroom's but seem to be receiving email notifications for the class, even though I have disabled notifications. Any ideas?

Yep I was told this is not a good idea on shared Chromebook, but don't remember why. Perhaps it's not an issue for just a class of students.

Year 5 at a primary school want to get some Chromebooks but can only afford 7 devices now. Would I be best seating them up with a shared account, separate accounts, some kind of guest or kiosk mode????

I had to visit a couple of schools today and both were packed with kids. One of those schools is in a very wealthy area, the teacher is sure a lot of her pupils have stay at home mums but have sent the kids in anyway. I also noticed the government changed some guidance last night, something about children without a quite area to work can now get sent in. I think they are doing this to get back at the teacher union stuff the other day. I am also not sure where schools now stand from a safety perspective as schools are now effectively closed, so i think the government can get round that safety issue now.

It still gets bug fixes and patches until April 11, 2023. I did get a quote for Office 2019 pro but they don't really have the funds. I think I tried that last time and had issues, but will have another go next time I am with the teacher.

We use Office 2013 pro on Windows 10 but keep getting staff saying Office no longer works. What seem to be happening is they are accidently clicking an office icon in the start > tiles menu, this then opens a different version of Office with a message saying its not licenced and blocking them from editing. When they later try to open a document it is now defaulting to opening the unusable version of Office and not our licences version. As a get round I am getting those effected users to open the Office 2013 program first and browse to the document but this is a short term fix. I did try uninstalling the tile version of office that is causing the issue but it seems to come back after a while Any ideas?

Just trying to get the jump on this issue before I visit the school tomorrow. When the teacher selects HDMI 1 on the Smart TV the TV displays a smartsupport screen flashing on and off constantly. They have turned it on and off and tried another laptop Any ideas?

I managed to use restricted groups to make my local_admin user an administrator. I'll look at LAPS in a few weeks. Thanks all

OK, so I have worked out part of my issue but not the fix just yet. When I setup a new device I always create a new local admin account (local_admin) with a very complex password and disable the built-in admin account. At this school after an IP range change there were a number of desktops that for whatever reason didn't pickup the new IP range, couldn't see the server anymore and when I tried to login using my new 'local_admin' account it was no longer an admin account, so I couldn't easily fix the issue. BTW it was the LA that did the IP migration. Because the LA used the destructive part of restricted groups and I didn't realise, I was then not able to login as my 'local_admin' account when some clients lost access to the server. So now I know this school has restricted groups. Next I need to workout if I can add my new 'local_admin' account I have manually setup on all computers into the restricted groups already there, so it becomes a local admin. When I look at the GPO it just lists domain groups, not users. I am hoping it lets me add local users in a similar way it adds domain groups.

Well I have no just discovered that the LA setup restricted groups already, and looking at the link above they used 'Members of this group' which wipes out all local groups. So now I need to get my head round how that all works :-( I'll start a new forum post if I have any questions about that

unfortunately this also requires access to the domain server to get at the passwords, which I would like to avoid if possible. I could be wrong but think this just adds a domain group to the local admins account on the client machine, I need to set the actual local admin password that comes built into Windows desktop OS.

Just wondered if there was a simple way to set the password on the built-in local admin account on all domain clients? Currently we have the built-in local admin account disabled but recently had an issue after needing to change our IP and subnet to a new range, and almost locked ourselves out from every client computer on the domain. Managed to get back in by using a back door to enable the built-in local admin account so have decided it might be best just to have this account enabled, but with a very strong password. I don't want to use LAPS by Microsoft as this looks overly complex just for a small primary school and we also don't want random passwords for each client. I want to set the same password and then keep this in the safe. Most forums seem to suggest using SolarWinds but with all the news articles about them being hacked I would rather see if I can find a different way. Any ideas?

I know you have now switched things to a different backup, but just in case someone else reads this, some server management software hook into VSS, this can cause Windows backup to bork.

Just noticed if I go to Windows update history it lists the last updates as March but I have installed updated since them, I do the host updates termly. errors or important info from Windows update log the above file is very big but it does seem to repeat the same issues above throughout. Got the following listed in event log - - - Updated - - - OK, Just going through the above to make easier to read - hold on EDIT - DONE

Our only server is a host with 2 VMs. I just tried to install Windows updates but it errored out (didn't take note of error). I then tried to reboot it but it just stayed on the desktop screen, same if I try to log off. I did manage to get it to reboot using a powershell script sent from our server management software but still have the same issues. I just ran sfc /verifyonly and it has found issues with the server files :-( The lock command has worked so I have left the server locked (hopefully I can log back in) Both VMs are running OK on this host but I cant get access to the school until after Christmas so I am not going to do any fixing until then. Just wondering what I should do next? Do I run sfc /scannow from cmd and see what happens?

YAY that did it :0) The help page I was following started of by saying 'delete the downloaded config files'. and create new ones lol
