We have moved away from Inventor, it was overly complicated for the students and staff. The final push to move was when we received an email asking us to renew our license, just like previous years however this time we couldn't. When attempting to renew our license, the free option was removed and we were asked to pay. I contacted the support team at Autodesk but never received any type of reply or help. Our staff are now looking at using Sketchup, they say it does enough for what they need and is simpler to learn and teach.

I use double edge "Safety razor", once you get used to it it's fine and can give a better shave. The cost of the blades are also cheaper compared to the disposable blades such as Gillette.

SharePoint shared resource folders - layout ideas
noelmm replied to petben's topic in Cloud Services
Instead of using multiple document libraries we used a sub site for each department, this means they can have their own landing page with department specific information displayed. Each site has a tile on our main site which simply links to the subsite and works quite well. Taking this approach has allowed us to be very specific with our permissions if we want to be as we can simply break inheritance on the sub site level and put new, unique permissions in place. -
Teams Sites or Just SharePoint for Staff Departmentals areas
noelmm replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
We used SharePoint sites, one per department. This gave us the option of having each department have a slightly custom version with relevant links etc on the site homepage so students and staff could access resources or see a public facing department calendar with trips etc. Each site has 2 document libraries, one for staff and one for students, both with restricted access. While it took a while to setup it seems to work well for our needs, we still have a teams channel per subject as well so our departments can have meetings etc but this is more of a throwback to lockdown. -
Thanks Andy, I just found the option as you replied.

Hi all, Last week we had a new Papercut solution installed and during the testing we requested that staff could see any billing codes assigned to them so they can select the correct one when printing and this was working as expected. We left the engineer finishing the install on Friday afternoon and came in this morning and found that users can no longer see the shared accounts when they release a print job. I have found the option for "Select shared accounts from a list" isn't enabled, if I enable it it gives the list as we want. Does anyone know how to do this for all users in a group? Thanks Noel

School burns while Fire evac prints - InVentry & Papercut
noelmm replied to EliteCommander's topic in Physical Security
We are moving to papercut over the summer so hopefully we won't have this issue with our inventry reports. Currently we use Equitrac and simply have a dedicated laptop on reception that is mapped directly to a printer so when a user presses the report button instead of having to release a print job it just automatically prints, it takes no more 30 seconds to print the report this way.- 23 replies

[bromcom] How staff can see just their Performance Management.

Our open call has been updated to say the end of August, although I wouldn't be shocked if that gets pushed back again. -
[bromcom] How staff can see just their Performance Management.
noelmm replied to Rob_D's topic in MIS Systems
We've had an open call with Bromcom for months about this, we keep being told it will be introduced later in the year. Our SLT were told this basic function was there when we purchased the module, we quickly found it wasn't which makes the whole aspect of it unusable. -
We've just installed some Viewsonic 4k 65" screens and plan to do more over the summer. The screens come with built in whiteboard software which can also be installed onto a windows laptop so a teacher can create a lesson and save it and then simply load it using either the laptop software or app on the TV if signed in. There is an option to convert file types so you may be able to convert your existing resources to the Viewsonic format. If you didn't want to convert files you can still import PowerPoint files and possibly others into the whiteboard software or you can simply connect to the TV by HDMI or wireless presentation and use the screen that way.

We have a word template where all of the information is pulled into and its a simple enough system to setup. You can have comment banks, although we don't use them they can be useful.

Some of our teachers have claimed this is for CPD to try and put the onus on us to provide a laptop. As I have explained to any one requesting the software, you can state it's for CPD but you are actually working a second job to earn extra income, as such we are unable to support the teacher. Once I have put my point across we haven't had a problem with teachers other than 1 staff member saying they would need to pull out of the contract as they couldn't purchase a laptop currently but they still understood and were fine about it .

I've tried this several time over the last few years on domain joined devices, only ever got it working on 1 and couldn't replicate it. My official guidance now to all staff with this request is they need to provide their own laptop and we do not support the software.

We've recently purchased 7 stone machines (standard desktop form) and not had a problem and the customer service was great, I really couldn't ask for more. What sold me on Stone was the 5 year, next day onsite warranty.

What I do is every term go through and delete any of the reports and documents users have generated as these get saved automatically to the DMS, this normally gets us down to 1GB even with us publishing reports to MCAS.
-
We've reported this problem to Bromcom many times over the last few years to always be told the problem must be on our end and no one else is reporting issues. We've always been able to show our internet speed is more than sufficient and access other webpages etc. as normal when seeing problems.

After sitting back and admiring it for a while I'd give my current setup to one of my nephews who is just getting into PC's and then use it for some virtualisation and maybe gaming.

That would explain when I've deleted cached profiles it's helped the situation but it always comes back. I may need to run a profile delete script at logoff, the only problem is that would increase login time for the students.

Hi everyone, We currently use Photoshop CS6 and never had a problem until now. All of a sudden, we now have a teacher report issues when students are trying to open photoshop files stating a low storage error. I‘ve checked the machines and there is more than enough space available on the local drive and the memory is sitting around 30-40% utilisation. Event viewer isn’t showing any errors to speak of so not sure what’s happening. We use OneDrive so I thought that in conjunction with Google Chrome is that causing an issue where the browser cache if filling up however the files shouldn’t be large enough to do that (the files are around 30-40mb). If the student receives the error (not all users will) they will restart the device and be fine for a while and then it may come back. It doesn’t matter what student uses what machine, it appears to happen randomly (user A can be logged into PC A and see the problem one week but not the next week). I’ve attempted to use Senso to see what the machine is doing in terms of resources etc but Senso takes that long to connect the student has already restarted the machine. I’ve asked the teacher that next time this happens (they will be using the software towards the end of the week) to ask the student to see if they can download the file to a usb stick and open it from there before rebooting the machine. I’ve also provided the teacher with the instructions on how the students can clear their scratch file etc. but I’ve been told that didn’t help. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look at next? Also what software (free) are you using to monitor resources etc for a remote machine? I’ve used the computer management option and connected to a remote machine but I’ve always found that to be slow. Thanks Noel

Hi, We're currently looking to purchase an interactive touchscreen for one of our classrooms. Currently we have a 65" Clever Touch screen with WePresent. I'm looking for a 75" screen with a good touchscreen (the calibration problems with our current Clever Touch made the touchscreen unusable) and wireless presentation functionality and multiple HDMI ports so we can have hardwired connections also. I've been in contact with one supplier (Stone Computers) and they recommend ViewSonic screens. Never having looked at ViewSonic screens of this type (I've had multiple standard monitors and they were great) what's everyone opinion? Also can anyone recommend any suppliers I can contact in addition to Stone based in the West Midlands/Shropshire area who can supply and fully install? Thanks

You're right it does but you would be amazed at how many students during our mock exams couldn't even print a document. Using the autosave feature just gives the exams officer that peace of mind and since using it we haven't had any one lose their work. I remember a few years back a student sat an exam (real GCSE paper) and afterwards simply shut down their laptop and didn't save or print the work (they must have ignored and prompt to save their work) and lost everything, it caused so many issues that I wouldn't want that to happen again.

We have the same problem with our invigilators, most of them either do not know how to open a web page and log into the clock website we use or they simply won't. The setup of the laptop with clock etc each morning during exam season is now just part of my daily routine and only takes 10 minutes and at least I know it's done. As for the student laptops for those users who requite one I wouldn't expect an invigilator to really touch them, we have it setup that we log them in with a specific account and exam WritePad starts automatically, the students then complete their work and press print and it prints to a shared printer in the room. Once everyone is happy that the work has printed the students leaves the room and we clear the work ready for the next exam and put the laptops away. I wouldn't consider any of this an invigilators job, nor would I want them to assist with it as they could make a genuine mistake and delete a students work before ensuring it had printed correctly etc.

I'd like to know this as well. Ever since we went O365 (moved to SharePoint in September, been OneDrive since January) our local authority no longer backups our data as they say a backup strategy isn't required as we now have access to a recycle bin (I have access to the 2nd stage) and we can restore a document library if needed. As a result I've considered a Synology solution but need to do more research before I justify asking for that type of money if it's not needed.

Have you tried Facebook? Most printers now have dedicated groups on Facebook and the members will know any quirks with the specific model. You could also take a look at some of the more popular youtube channels for 3d printing such as Chris Riley or Teaching Tech.
