I know it's generally not a good idea to do this, however when a user gets a block page with the reason: "The server's certificate did not match the domain name", is there any way to bypass this? Science receive vouchers they can spend on equipment and the site that they use to receive these uses a URL which throws up this error. I'd love nothing more than to get them to fix their error but in the meantime, is there a way to bypass this for just this one site for one user only? If not, I'll have to keep telling them that there's nothing I can do to fix the issue (beyond moaning to the site owner(s).)

Yes, we are and I can't sign in as an Admin since it thinks I'm a new user with a new license.

Televisions definitely do but I've yet to encountered a monitor which hasn't come back on after the power has been cut. I'd have loved to have done that though, but all the schools I've worked at have always gone for the lowest cost option which is a double-socket per computer and nothing else fancy.

Don't worry, I've not realised there is an actual Teams admin centre and everything I need to do is in there.

I'm not actually sure which forum to post this under but as it's related to Microsoft 365, it seems the best one to put it in. Admins/Mods: please move it if it is the wrong one. I'm tearing my hair out with this, I have Staff (Headteacher specifically) who cannot create new teams in MS Teams and I think (but not entirely sure) that I need to add users to a policy under "Teams & groups" in the 365 admin centre, however despite being a Global Admin and a Teams Admin, I don't seem to have the ability to add users to an existing Policy, nor can I create new Policies. Someone please help me?

One of England's largest school academies to go phone-free

I'm curious as to which other Schools in Devon are giving out the Yondr pouches as ours are doing the same but we only introduced this earlier this year. -
First day back, what has, or is, going to break?
MrEprise replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
It's not like it was a good product to start with and it sounds like the Trust are moving away from Inventry to Entrysign. -

Odd. There is an update to this. Scomis have confirmed that ESS have changed the field and refuse to revert the change and Inventry has turned around and said they can't (or won't?) change the field either, so we've reached a stalemate. -

Inventry. It looks like the Reg Group field in SIMS has been renamed to Tutor Group (probably by ESS in their latest update ) and is now breaking our exports to Inventry as their importer expects Reg Group for the field. -
So far, It's been a odd Summer Holiday so far and a bit more taxing than normal (also long post as I explain why.) I had an APC UPS fail in an odd way (displayed "Internal Fault, Contact APC), then fix itself after I unplugged it & the battery for a few minutes, then plugged it back in again without the battery and left it for some while where it no longer displays a error. I then plugged the battery back in, ran the self-test and it seems to check out fine. Not sure I trust it now though. No idea of warranty as it was purchased by my predecessor who didn't leave much in the way of documentation (but that wasn't really his fault due to the usual MAT politics.) I also had a HPE server catastrophically fail after a cabinet move (out of our former Reprographics dept. where the room is now becoming a Behaviour Unit and I don't want to leave server equipment in there,) where it wouldn't turn back on no matter what I did to it i.e. swapped around components, tried a PSU from one of the working servers (though not something I'd really recommend doing) and nothing I tried seemed to work. Luckily, it was still in warranty but only by one day, where by the next day it would have expired! It also turned out the iLO still worked and was able to prove it an issue where a motherboard replacement was required. As luck seemed to be on my side that particular day, HPE agreed and sent out someone to replace it. The guy they sent had an uncanny resemblance to Johnny Ball and had an air of eccentricity much like him. Turned out he'd been doing the same job since the 1970's working for DEC (then Compaq, then HP up to HPE in the present day) where he was repairing VAXs and PDPs. One interesting anecdote was that he was called out to Hinkley Point B back in the early 2000's and asked could they have another PDP-8 for redundancy in case one of the existing ones were to fail. Yes, he had to tell them that this really wasn't possible as getting the required S-shape backplane was next to impossible to source. These were both in the same cabinet so I do wonder if the UPS took out the server in some way, which it very well might have done. I've also had to deal/will be dealing with the following while doing the above: - a new Photocopier contract so making room for new copiers while simultaneously trying to move the old copiers out of the way (of which there's no ETA on collection) then dealing with the unexpected arrival of an engineer which I didn't get prior notice of. All nice guys to deal with though. - removing an ICT Suite so the room can be split in half, while also deliberating how to turn one half back into a suite. Some members of SLT want it back as an ICT Suite with desktops while others want it as a normal classroom with Laptops but don't realise I probably won't have the budget next year for them.) - deployment of refurb Laptops for all teachers - I didn't initially have budget for these as the Trust said they'd find funding for it, but then it turned out that I'd be paying for these out of my own budget after all somehow. This of course was decided 3 weeks before we broke up which meant it was all ordered late & so I won't get these until the second day of week 2, all the while trying to remove old desktop setups and trying to find storage for it all. - lots of last minute submissions on the HelpDesk for room and office moves that I need to somehow allocate time to go do and find equipment for. - trying to get rid of a rat that had managed to get into the IT office (the door was briefly open while I was moving equipment in and out - I guess long enough for it to hop in while I wasn't there.) Not for the squeamish, it did eventually get captured by one of the Premises staff but did meet a bit of an untimely end with the business end of a long pipe. Our pest control guy said it was for the best but I couldn't help feeling a bit upset that its life ended that way. - managed to get locked in our Maths & Music block while upgrading Music's computers with slightly better ones. The computers are situated at the far end of the building in 2 converted practice rooms so are soundproofed. When one of our Premises staff shouted out asking if anyone was still in the building, he heard no reply and carried on locking and alarming the building. Cue me walking back into the Music classroom and subsequently hearing an alarm going off. Oddly, this noise sounded distant so I didn't realise I'd set it off until I went to walk out of the building and found myself blocked by a locked door. The building has 2 entrances at each end so I had to run back to the other entrance where both the alarm was louder and where I saw said member of Premises walking back to the building to find out why the alarm went off. Imagine his surprise when he saw me knocking on the window of the door! Fun times had by all...

Cloudstrike, Azure, Google, etc. When cloud computing goes wrong...
MrEprise replied to Koldov's topic in General Chat
Depends which way you look at it. It did affect some users in as much as various 'cloud' services were unavailable for those people who rely on said 'cloud' services. -
Watching that reminded me of this video from Linus Tech Tips when they tested an "Unbreakable" TV from China. https://www.youtube.com/embed/4eSADWuZskk It survived what they did to it but they didn't test it while mounted to a wall and I'd imagine kids would just see this as a challenge.

They wont have been completely bricked as HP do include some sort of BIOS/UEFI recovery on their systems. It's usually a case of downloading an older revision of the firmware and running it on any system, then when prompted there should be an option to create a recovery USB stick.

Do you know which version drops support? I'm using macOS 12.7.5 Monterey and this still works.
-
I had the business version of that. It was all black and they'd omitted 9 of the multimedia buttons at the top. Bit annoying but still a nice enough keyboard.
-
A member of our Student Reception staff has one of these. She'd bought it in some while back asking if I could possibly repair it for her so that she could use it at work. A spare keyboard her husband had lying around from his work (MSP), I soon found out why it needed repair - a beverage of some sort had been spilt over the left-hand side so a number of keys on that side had stopped working! I ended up stripping it down, cleaning it then getting one of those circuit scribe pens (the ones with conductive ink) and drew back in the missing traces on the membrane. 3 Years later, she's still using it without any issues.

I have one of the various "remakes" that Microsoft made over time. It was horribly cheap feeling, very light and I couldn't get on with it at all. Back in the box it went.

I'd always wanted the Intellimouse with Intellieye (Optical version) when I was much younger. Saved for ages for one and when I had enough money, it'd been discontinued. Sods.

Isn't that a Time & Motion Study?

Yep, InVentry SIMS Sync wasn't working either. They've had to go back and re-compile their Sync tool with the necessary API changes.

I assume you mean Windows 11, not 10? We got ours last year too. Imagine my surprise when I also discovered probably the same non-supported CPU - a Celeron J3455, couldn't believe it when I saw it. I'm thinking InVentry bulk bought many hundreds of these devices with this CPU and are fully intent to using them up rather than writing them off. I imagine it to be the same scenario with the Geobooks and why so many of their devices have the pretty naff Celeron N4020 CPU!

Took me a while to find it in various catalogues available online but it's OM1. A site called yumpu.com has it listed in one of their catalogues as 24-core multimode OM1 fibre.

It's a shame it's become a issue in this way as it's been quite useful when some of our users get a strange glitches or missing items in Explorer for example. Their article is slightly wrong though in that it doesn't restart the GPU driver per se, instead it restarts the Desktop Window Manager (which in turn resets the GPU in some way) so it's only been a thing since Windows Vista I believe.

Friend of mine who used to work in the TV repair business uses a Cello brand TV - says these are really quite good. A UK based company who also assembles the TVs in the UK, all based around LG components so the smart TVs use WebOS but they also do non-smart ones too.

Just a point on the almost free part, I offered them 6 large wheelie bins full of old & broken IT kit including 60-odd Core2Duo Desktops & they wouldn't take it for free as they said that they'd need at least 60 '10-years-old-or-less' working desktops or laptops to break even. We use everything to death so I ended up telling them that they weren't a viable solution in that case, as our Trust is reluctant to pay for IT waste removal. EDIT: Oh and if anyone is wondering why our Trust don't necessarily want to pay, it's because they've been spoiled over the years with companies who could remove their IT waste for free.
