We had a projector stolen at my last school. In our case, it was an education-specific model and they'd managed to gain entry and whip it away without showing their face. We'd reported the theft and since we'd kept records of serial numbers, the reason we managed to get it back was because a) said person didn't stop at us with their life of crime & b) police had noted that the projector wasn't the type that the average consumer could normally buy so cross-checked our reported S/N with the one on the projector they'd seized. Like you say, keeping an asset register up to date is crucial if you want any hope in seeing stolen equipment again.

I had one that did this (had to send one back under warranty with faulty trackpad) and in the end had to reprovision then deprovision the Chromebook before it'd disappear from our tenant. There was still a stuck job for it but somehow I'd managed it.

Just a follow up to this - in order to make the trip worth their while, they don't just want to leave us with bins but want to make a pickup there and then before they'll leave us with bins, which defeats the original reason for getting the bins in the first place!

One of our Admin staff has a similar Philips Air Filtering unit which also apparently has 'smart' features. When it's in an error state, it frequently shows 'FO' on the display. Think it might be trying to tell us something...

I had this when Inventry asked for similar details. The IP address bit is them asking for the IP address(es) you've allocated for their equipment to access your network, because they like to do that themselves before they come to fit the terminals. I'd have preferred setting DHCP reservations but that wasn't an option at the time. Under the MIS connection details bit, the Username/Password is for an account you've set up on your MIS with basic access only so that Entrysign can pull (allegedly) basic user details across to their platform. The SQL instance/database names is so their connector can talk with your MIS. The Inventry connector still has to connect via our external SIMS connector instance, but for some reason won't work without the SQL instance/database names.

I had this thought when I saw the post earlier. What's the point of a Pen test if you're making it easy for them to break in? I'd have thought the real point to it is to leave the defences in place and then it's up to the testers to find a way around them.

I don't know, it might last several years more considering we still had about 48 17-year old Core 2 Duo desktops (all with original parts, bar an SSD and a RAM upgrade each) still running up until I removed them over the last 2 weeks.

Is there something silly like licenses you have to add first, before it'll take any more APs over the initial one you've added? I always remember a Motorola controller we had at my last place, you could add as many APs as you liked, but it'd only address the first number of APs you had licenses for.

Does anyone know of any WEEE recycling companies that will supply a small skip or container for a short period, allowing me to fill it up before they pick it up again later on? Preferably free but I'm aware it could cost, in which case anything free or cheap. I'd normally do a Van pickup but a lot of our broken/EOL kit is spread out across the site and as we don't have a central place to put it, it'd take a while to gather it all up before getting it picked up and I'd like to be able to shove it in a skip/container at my leisure.

Does anyone know of any companies in the UK who will repair a Sawgrass SG500 Sublimation printer? Reported as not working with a large puddle of black & yellow ink under the printer and after cleanup, turned it on to an error code SC200-00 which suggests an issue with the maintenance unit. As per the instructions on their website, I took the right-hand side panel to discover everything drenched in ink so no wonder it doesn't work. Cleaned it up as best I can but now it throws up a different error. It is now beyond my capability when it comes to printer repair so would like someone else to look at it and tell me whether it's worth repairing (which it probably isn't) or buying another one.

Used to do a lot of that in my last school, especially where lack of money came into play. Much like the time we had ancient PCs in our Motor Vehicle workshop and the Staff & Students used to moan something chronic about the speed of logins. So I took Windows Thin PC (which hadn't been out long) & deployed it on the PCs and set them up to the degree where a user would login and it'd take a lot less time to get to a usable desktop than before. What they didn't see behind the scenes, was everything I did to make it look like it was logging in like a normal desktop PC but instead would seamlessly whisk them over to a Terminal Server session instead. Logging off was much the same and once the TS session disconnected, there was a script that detected that and continued the logoff of the user on the PC. All this in a couple of days I seem to remember.

I looked at Pure IT when finding desktops recently - They don't seem very good value compared to ICT Direct. Although we had to go with a 12-month warranty just to keep within a certain budget, the Optiplex 3060 on there is still more expensive with a 120GB SSD & 2-year warranty compared with ICT Direct's 240GB SSD & 3-year warranty Other companies you could use whose prices are also very close to ICT Direct's are below. We used the LTSB versions at our last place for many of the same reasons as some others on here. I used to do various odd testing, trying to get to a happy medium with the SAC versions but it couldn't be done, at least not the way we wanted it. I always remember trying to set a Start Menu layout, I was creating it in 1803 but for some reason the layout wouldn't apply properly to users. So I tried creating the layout in 1709 (as I still had a VM with that version) and applied it to my test users logging into 1803 and miraculously it worked fine if I did it that way! It was little things like that that made us think we weren't quite ready to make the jump yet. Current place, we use the SAC versions and they work rather well.

Beta, Generic and KMS Client keys which are already published elsewhere on the internet as far as I could tell.

Just to add to this - although they installed a newer version of Windows 10 on ours so we're at least in support for a while, it's still bound by a 20 connection limit and once you have more than 1 screen and a few users connecting to the console app, this uses up the 20 connections very quickly and then you end up with screens that can't connect or users complaining that the console app doesn't work. Why they couldn't have offered a option to install the backend to a proper server is beyond me.

I'm curious what spec the hardware you got is? We got it installed recently and I noted that the 2 units are both running a Quad-core Celeron J3455 which are barely better than the Dual-core Celeron N4020 in the Geobooks and it shows. These CPUs are not supported by Windows 11 but since I wondered how they got away with that one, I noticed they're running Windows 10 LTSC IoT edition which is still supported for a fair number of years after W10s general support ends. We have a few other schools in the Trust using Inventry but we also have 2 other pre-merger schools which went for EntrySign. Not sure what the hardware for those is like but the interface seemed nicer.

This is likely as I found with some ER DVDs of mine. Seasons 2 to 4, most of the discs won't work at all but a couple of the discs in Season 2 do work but intermittently. The common denominator here is that all of the discs from Seasons 2 to 4 are manufactured at the Cinram plant in Olyphant, PA where by all the other Seasons were manufactured in various plants elsewhere in the world and work absolutely fine. There are a number of discussions on the internet relating to this manufacturing plant and disc rot with Warner Bros DVDs where the assumption seems to be that whatever the chemical formulation used in the manufacture of the data layer, was allegedly fine until about 2006.

As far as I could find out, Microsoft are only doing this on recently created Tenants. Whether this is 1, 2 or 3+ years old, I'm not sure. Ours is 9 years old and Microsoft have left ours alone. Once you've risk-assessed this (as mentioned above), you'll need to go to your Azure Active Directory, go to Overview, click the Properties tab and down the bottom of the page is a section called "Security defaults". It'll most likely be enabled for your Tenant and this enforces MFA for all users in the Tenant. If you're truly okay with turning this off, change it to Disabled and click on Save at the bottom of the window. That should hopefully take away the enforcement and allow you time to set MFA up at a later date.

I think the clue is in the bit that says "(uses more power)" and I'd imagine that Windows detects that the laptop is a device where a battery is present and hides the setting. I'd imagine there's some setting elsewhere that allows you to add it back, but Windows being Windows, it'll be hidden somewhere obscure.

Does anyone know if Google Workspace/ChromeOS has an equivalent to the User Loopback Policy Processing Windows has? I'd like to set up a particular app so that it installs for users of certain Chromebooks but not on others and I don't know whether it's possible? Thanks.

I found this wonderful lever that flashes a set of amber lights on each side of the car, this seems to tell other road users where I want to turn. /s On a more serious-ish note, I had a MK4 Vauxhall Astra for years and never realised there were courtesy lights above the rear passenger doors. These were off when my Parents had the car originally and when it was passed to me, I had it for a number of years before noticing them. Later that year, I ended up scrapping the car.

Yes, but GSM isn't planned to be switched off for at least the next 10 years so why can't they send alerts via that for those who have 3G phones? EDIT: Should clarify that I'm referring to the UK rather than Australia which has already phased out GSM.

Which makes sense to me now as my Mum didn't get it and her phone is only 3G compatible also. My Nokia 6.1 got it despite repeated text messages from Vodafone suggesting that my phone doesn't support 4G (it does) and my work phone got it as it's a 5G phone. I had read somewhere that the protocol for sending alerts has existed since the GSM days but it seems they're not using that.
