One of the techies here wrote our Signing in software, again like most of the others he would love to go back and rewrite it as he was learning while coding. Ours does visitor signature, QR code generation, QR code sign out, takes photo of visitor, AD integration.. prints ID badge (Brother QL-570), emails staff member when a visitor has signed in to see them. For repeat visitors they can sign in using a MiFare card. There is an admin interface for office staff so they can see who is currently on site and also print a fire evac report. It runs on a locked down Windows 7 installation, mini-ITX PC, 21.5" Touch Screen (Dell S2240T ), Brother QL-570 label printer It works great for us, he's saved the place a heap of cash and we are really happy with it.

[sims] Sims Server Performance Benchmarks - 2016 Edition
SpaceInvader83 replied to Sam_Brown's topic in MIS Systems
School Info 1186 student school (SQL 2012, Solus2) Sims server VMware, 24GB RAM, 6 Cores on Xeon E5-2640 @ 2.49ghz , HP Lefthand SAN Sims Benchmarks 5 Seconds Client Login Time (from launching Sims to front page using trusted logon) 160 (16seconds if no one else is running reports, I can see blocking when querying the sims db while running the report) Seconds Reports >> Students >> addresses >> Year 7 >> 1 Reg Group 8 Seconds Search "Smith" student name in main screen search box 1 Second Search "Smith" student name in main students screen search box 1 Second Find Student Page N/A Seconds Solus 3 launch on server ldf - 203MB mdf - 8.1GB I seem to suffer from similar issues to others here, mine is evident as when I look at when the slowness occurs I can see blocking on the SQL server, so someone running a large report can bring Sims.net to a grinding halt, soon as this blocking clears it all goes back to normal. This is probably a config issue at my end but I've never really been able to nail it down to anything, admittedly my mdf and ldf are on my OS drive but my initial reading led me to believe as we run on a SAN this shouldn't be any issue, this may not be the case. -

If you preview the report as oppose to running it do you find it much quicker? -
There is a post on the Avast forums regarding this, we haven't pushed the task to update out yet and have set program updates to manual. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=183389.0

From memory it really is that simple, I'm pretty sure I renewed and chose renew with new key and it worked seamlessly .- 1 reply

Chromebooks and a Virtual Environment
SpaceInvader83 replied to RJohnson91's topic in How do you do....it?
We use lots of Chromebooks here, most are personal devices where the users login with their own Google Apps account but we do have a shared resource of Chromebooks that are set up in Public Session Mode, works great for us, user accepts policy to login to the chromebook, they can then log into whatever they wish, upon exiting the session the settings are binned off ready for the next user. This is how Google recommend setting up for shared devices. With public session kiosks (also called public sessions), multiple users can share the same Chrome device without the need to sign in. For example, use public sessions to configure Chrome devices for use as kiosks, loaner devices, shared computers, or for any other work or school-related purpose for which users don't need to sign in.- 2 replies

Very interested in this thread as we are in the process of doing the same, I looked at Syncdocs but I'm just not convinced. Ideally I want to sync the shared areas like the original poster while keeping a local copy, with a view to eventually getting rid of the local copy. Backupify is the backup solution I've been looking at rather than relying on the 30 day backup from Google.

Sorry to bump an old thread did anyone achieve this? Thanks

Toshiba Satellite Pro R50-B-12B Service Manual anyone?
SpaceInvader83 replied to GeekyPete's topic in Hardware
Remove the plastic end caps from the hinges (Kensington lock goes through the one on the left), they slide away from the laptop with little force... remove 1 screw from either side under these hinge covers, unclip bezel as normal. -
Just check they are actually getting the Program/def updates, here we put an outgoing policy on our smoothwall to allow the Avast update IP's straight out to the web, the IP address' that they use for updates look to have changed just before Christmas. I do a lookup on the update servers it lists when you try updating in a client, namely iabs.u.avast.com and ivps9x.u.avast.com and add them to Smoothwall.

Connectvity issues with HP Chromebooks and Meru AP320 APs
SpaceInvader83 replied to Bruce123's topic in Wireless Networks
We have the HP Chromebook 14 G3's, the only issue we had was originally they came shipped with an old version of Chrome OS 36.12 I think and these suffered with connection drop outs which was even preventing signing in reliably, we updated them to v45.XX and it seemed to alleviate our issues. It's probably worth noting we are running controller version 6.1-0-3 but we run a custom firmware version on the AP's (D41367) due to reliability issues when it first got installed after many engineer visits. -

SpaceInvader83 replied to Bruce123's topic in Wireless Networks
AP 320's are EOL but will carry on working on your current firmware, we have around 200 Chromebook 14's and don't seem to have any connection issues but we are running a slightly older version, controller is on 6.1-0-3. -

SpaceInvader83 replied to SpaceInvader83's topic in Hardware
Accupart look just the ticket I'll give them a try, thanks everyone! -
Just wondering if you could recommend anywhere for laptop screens? We currently buy from a supplier called AJparts, anyone recommend any more? Thanks

Scratch 2.0 Install Method (no .msi)
SpaceInvader83 replied to Andie's topic in Educational Software
I'm pretty sure scratch runs off a network share fine if this is an option instead of deployment. -
Hi this is probably really simply, but I have Cisco Unity setup as an auto attendant so we can have menu options on a certain extension. This all works fine but it only allows a single call to it at once, we have 6 lines in total so would want this many theoretically to all be accessing the auto attendant at the same time - currently if more than one person dials the extension it is engaged. Thankyou Simon

Yes we use them here, it's been painless to be fair ( 2 years in) - from my point of view no issues. Very simple sync app that pulls the data from sims to there server, support is very good but like I said I've rarely had to deal with support as we've generally had no issues.

We are running Meru kit and had a couple of iphone users running ios 9 who couldn't connect, we just reset the network settings on the devices, reconnected and it was fine. I'm hoping it doesn't end up being a wider issue.

iPads able to receive apps without apple id's?
SpaceInvader83 replied to the_dude's topic in Cloud Services
Sounds like you won't need to have an apple ID account signed into the iPads at all once ios 9 is released, which can only be a good thing for management. It will however stop anyone who uses a single itunes account on all iPads purchasing just a single licence per app and deploying to all the iPads they manage.
