Apple School Manager and Meraki MDM
thebyronic replied to wordy00's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Hi Wordy, I believe that only devices bought after March 1, 2011 will enrol on the DEP (ASM). So I doubt the iPad 2s you have will go on there. It sounds like you are using the 'Shared iPad' feature of ASM? Shared iPad is only compatible with certain devices. Found this on Apple's site - *Shared iPad is supported on iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4 with 32GB of storage or higher. In regards to forcing apps onto iPads without user interaction, you would need to use VPP Device Assignment. This assigns the VPP license to the device rather than the user. We use DEP and Meraki for our staff and wanted to have all the iPads setup and ready to go, to hand to staff on an inset day. We wanted a set of apps pre-installed before handing them out. We quickly realised that VPP Device Assignment was the only way this would work. There are some drawbacks to using this: 1. Your iPads need to be iOS 9 or higher 2. You need to have Meraki SM Enterprise (not the legacy license, which we had! Now limited to 100 devices -_-) We also went to use managed Apple IDs for staff, so that we could reset passwords etc.. I spent a week trying to get Apple's FTP working so that I could upload the damn CSV file, again had Apple support on the phone... When I eventually got the bloody thing to upload, went to test using a Managed ID and realised that you couldn't download any apps with it! All the documentation I had read, didn't say anywhere that you can't do certain things like downloading apps! The Enterprise team told me that I'm not the only person who agreed that we should be able to set permissions where we can staff IDs can download and student IDs can't. He said he would pass it on to the dev guys who would look at maybe putting that feature in. This document explains what you can and can't do with the IDs - https://help.apple.com/deployment/ios/?lang=en-gb#/iorf82eca43f Regarding the linking of Apple School Manager to an MDM, the way that I understand it is as follows: Buy iPad from re-seller (or Apple) > Tell them your DEP ID > Re-seller adds the device to your account > You add your re-seller ID to your DEP > Once added, device appears in ASM > Assign to Server > Choose server (Meraki) > Done! The device will then appear in Meraki under DEP where you configure it, tag it etc.. I spoke to Apple Enterprise support recently (dealing with a warranty replacement) and they informed me that there isn't a way of just adding a random iPad to the DEP. You have to buy it from Apple or a re-seller that's registered with DEP program. The way that it works with replacements is that they swap the serial number on their system which then replaces it in your DEP account. Here are some links you may find useful (you may have found these yourself): https://documentation.meraki.com/SM/Apps_and_Software/Using_Apple%E2%80%99s_Volume_Purchase_Program_(VPP)_with_Systems_Manager https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202995 One thing Apple Enterprise Support did say to me, is that they want to hear from Educational institutes regarding issues and and potential features and want to work with schools on Apple School Manager. As I say I found them very helpful! If you ever ring Apple support, just say straight away to them you are an enterprise customer and wish to speak to the enterprise team regarding the DEP and ASM. Anyway, hope I helped! :-) Arran -
Another thing that caught me out is that the iPads need to be iOS 9 or later and you can't be on the Meraki legacy license to be able to use device app assignment and not apple id assingment. I couldn't understand why it kept asking for the Apple ID and password -_- And yes I had to do the same thing. 'Purchase' the apps in VPP, add it in the app section of Meraki, sort my tags out for the apps, then go back into the apps page, click on the app and simply hit save changes (without actually doing anything). The classroom app isn't being used by us here at the moment. We haven't the right devices for it. How annoying...

See now I have found that apple support are quite responsive. I am doing the same thing this summer, preparing iPads through the DEP. Had a few issues, rang support and asked to speak to enterprise support, get through and they deal with me there and then. If they are unable to resolve the issue, they ring me back or email me, never taken them 2 weeks. I even had an issue with their FTP portal when trying to bulk upload managed Apple IDs. They had to escalate it to an engineer. Within 2 days it was fixed. I see a lot of people on here posting about Apple deployment issues, and as Apple don't seem to provide much in the way of online guides / support, I'm thinking of writing something based on what I'm using (Apple School Manager (DEP) and Meraki). Have to say though, their VPP support for apps and purchases is really crap and unhelpful! :-)

[ipad] Easy way to transfer photos and videos from iPad
thebyronic replied to Zoom7000's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
That's fair, I suppose it is quite expensive. The other thing we were looking at when finding an iPad solution, was Aircatch but from what I remember it's a one way thing, only able to get things from the iPad, not to the iPad. Made by a company called BITS? :/ -

Sorry I meant that it will allow people to change their AD password remotely. -

I think we paid £2k in first year and a grand year after. Not just useful for iPads, allows our students to access work / shared drives outside the school etc... The new version is going to have reverse password changing and calendar (homework) support. :-) -

Not free no, but worth having! We are the same, not currently using iPads in a 1:1 environment. And yes freeyourfiles.co.uk -

+1 for Foldr! Use it here, for us it made the iPads worth having in the school! Had a look at the new version at BETT this year, can't wait for the release at Easter! -
If I'm honest, No. As we only have 10 licenses, I have been putting them on manually as and when requested. If the school were to buy more, I'd look at attempting this again. Sorry I couldn't help.

Same problem with impero on the macs.. found that you have to alter the proxy bypass settings to get it working again. Have heard they are releasing an update to fix this.

Hi All, Haven't installed the new configurator yet as I've seen the many issues you all have been having. Spent an hour on the phone to Apple support this afternoon to fix an issue with an ipad that was refusing to supervise with AC1. The advisor on the phone said that Apple are very keen on hearing all issues you guys might be facing with AC2 and any feedback etc... Just saying it might be worth ringing their support if you are having issues. 0800 107 6285 Cheers Arran Oh and just realised I only post on here when its to do with Apple, says it all really...

+1 for AirServer

Good decision regarding the hwb. I agree, very clunky and slow! Just hope management don't take to it too much, it being 'free' -_- We use O365 here anyway and find it brilliant! Compared to our old exchange!

[ipad] Tranferring files from iPad to PC or network...
thebyronic replied to Koldov's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Had this same issue come to light recently. With other video recording related apps anyway ... Found an amazing (slightly expensive) solution called Aircatch. Not bought it yet but had trial it and worked perfectly allowing saving of files directly to the Windows network share! Pretty cool considering its Apple. -
Ok, this is weird! Just tried an older version 3.0.12 and it worked :/

Right, need help with this again! Bought 10 licenses, packaged up using an mst and it installs fine. But does not activate! When you run Airserver the first thing it opens is the Activation box! Even though I have put in the PIDKEY in the mst! I've checked the proxy and the address activation.airserver.com isnt blocked. (White-listed anyway) I have even used Orca to edit the MSI directly and put the PIDKEY directly in! And still no luck! Even when I run the install manually, during install, the Serial Key box is filled in with the key i added to the MSI and STILL no luck!! But! When I put the key into the activation box (after install) it works! But that obviously defeats the point of a silent install! Help Please!

Yea i did see on one of their support forums and gave them an email... they did indeed send me a deployment guide!
-
Oh I see. I knew it was all done through a webpage with a link in an email but wasn't sure of the amount of keys .. im glad to hear that it is just the 1 Thanks for your help!
-
Aha Thanks! At least I know it is doable! Also I have been wondering, in terms of license keys, If we were to buy say 50 licenses, would they provide us with 1 key for 50 (like most others) or will they provide me with 50 separate keys? I only ask as I emailed their support regarding site licenses, and they said they don't offer site licenses, only bulk purchasing... :/

Hi All, Now this one may have been asked before, but I couldn't find it from searching. The Secondary school I work for is looking at Airserver for our staff iPads. I've finally got it working with our terrible wireless network and it connects and mirrors fine. The problem I've got is that, how do you push out Airserver and have the package name the computer according to the Computer name and set a password? We will be deploying this on our current CC4 network but will eventually have it running on our Vanilla network (once we have moved across to it) Or, do I have to go around manually installing it to all teaching machines? :/ Thanks in advance!
