Wow, I didn't know that....

I'm praying to the elders of the internet that our department is not asked to order pretty ultrabooks for our next set of student laptops. Going to double the workbench time for repairs on simple jobs like missing keys. While I rate TOSHIBA pretty good, I'm a bit annoyed with our Tecra R840s. The hinge is attached to the lid by very tiny plastic 'blobs' and doesn't take much welly to break them. Lenovo is on my wish list, I was very impressed with the demo units we got sent last year. All about those hinges baby.

Lots of DVDs come with digital copies these days. I have no idea what DRM they use though as I stream everything..

Hm, I haven't had a successful 'from scratch' deployment since we updated to sql'14 and autumn 2. All various errors. Sigh.

Just made a new laptop image and now having trouble deploying SIMS to it. I keep getting the 'UnknownFailure' about 5 seconds into the 'Copying agent files' process. Helpful.. Firewall is turned off at both ends. Anyone encountered this and how did you troubleshoot the problem exactly? Many thanks

I think this changed with the Spring release. It should now be pointing to a Capita hosted online portal. If you want to host the files locally, need to download the documentation pack from Capita and upload it to the SIMS server, and repeat after each new release.

We just have a TV w/embedded PC pointed at BBC News channel. Going to look at getting Xibo running at some point instead.

Hi ladies and gents, I am looking for a (ideally free) CMS to start designing a new external website for the school. The media resources team are currently updating a 2003 Sharepoint site. We in the IT office want to do away with this back-end quite soon and move to something more modern and simple to modify, without looking simple! After setting the new website up we will then hand it over to MR to maintain, so it needs to be fairly easy to update images and perhaps move a couple of 'modules' around. Wordpress seems to be the most obvious one, but I would like to know what you suggest/using for your schools. Many thanks

Have you tried using PCPartPicker? It will also help find you the cheapest prices. If your primary use is gaming, an i7 is wasteful.

I've only been here a year and a lot of teachers have personalised their machines, I don't really mind this as they are coming up to 5 years old . *cries at budget* I wouldn't expect a PGCE to do this though...a bit cheeky imo.

Been going through the cupboard-o-doom and shifting through the now abandoned for a year PGCE scheme laptops to assign them to general staff today. Was going well until I found MR SMITH's laptop. MR SMITH seems to have self-righteously slapped stickers spelling his name in a juvenile font, as well as random zombies across the lid of the laptop. They are proving difficult to remove. So, got any tips for removing nasty stickers and sticky residue? Also keen to hear your stories and policies for this. If this MR SMITH had tried to return this to me I would have told him to get out and clean it before returning.

I get the impression that an Academy Trust has offered your school help if you join up with them. If they have a good rep then hopefully good things will come toward you. If your school want to become more autonomous with the same SLT then it seems like a disaster waiting to happen. However this is coming from a Techie in a currently imploding school so I'm very cautious about everything now

Here here...I believe I work in a school with a similar situation in the local area to the college in the news, and am a constant witness of abuse described by yourself. There are a few bad apples and ofc it rubs off on some of the more easily influenced children. Let's just say I am definitely going to think twice about confronting the next student who kicks my office door open, especially when the police are already called out on average 3 times a week.

Hold on a minute though, I was under the impression that new customers cannot have unlimited tethering anymore since a month ago. Wasn't it changed to something along the lines of 5GB tethering for any 'All you can eat' plans instead? My £12.90 plan is excellent value, had no problems.
