  1. Hi folks, I am bit concerned with my Apple server. Just recently I have used the keyboard and when I type on it, I am getting weird characters appearing and not the letters or numbers that are supposed to come out. I have tried restarting the server but it hasn't helped. I have checked keyboard and language settings and they all seem to be fine. Have I pressed a key combination by mistake. Any help would be great.
  2. Is there any free tools out there which will allow me to grab a OU from AD, export it to a CSV and then import the important info into an Open directory. I have tried rightclicking the OU in ad, its offers and option to export to a CSV, I have tried this but when I import into users management on MAC OSX it doesnt seem to work.
  3. So whos broughts COD4. What an amazing game. Modern warfare is amazing. You need to buy this game people. The most reliastic game I have seen in a while.
  4. we have an adaptec snap server 520 with 2tb and have purchased a SAN bloc for additonal storage. Can start out as a NAS box but can be setup with iScsi for SAN type setup and you can add storage as your school data grows and you can mix and match SATA and SAS drives. Brilliant investment, really good web interface and is very reliable. Migrating data from windows servers has been an issue even though it has its own migration utility
  5. I would take a more pro active approach. Install some printer management software and then compile a report and show SLT your findings. Once they see those then they will pay some attention. Imagine how much man hours a week you could save by not replacing toner and cartridges. My rule is take out all your inkjet printers and replace them all with lasers with high yield capability this will involvles less time for techies, will save costs in the long run and the printers are far better.
  6. If you looking for a printer with a brilliant Yield per toner. I recommend the HP CP3505 series printer. 6000 pages per toner. Has some real clever web based features.
  7. Hi folks I need to think about moving our mailbox store which is currently sitting on a hard drive which is a bit short on space. I have got another drive on the same server which I would like it moving over too. Is it just simple case of me shuttdown the services, moving the store over to the other disk and pointing the store to the other location. I am not sure if this will make a difference. Currently the store is sitting on some nice WD raptor 10000 rpm disks on a RAID 1 array and accessing mails are easily retrieved. I am planning on moving it to a bigger RAID 5 array using enterprise level WD SATA II disks. Will I notice a big performance degration if i did this? Any help on this would be appreciated

  11. Thanks Chris. Is advanced Installer an application?
  12. Thanks for you help but I have run into a problem This is the path to the file Set oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") oShell.Run "RegSvr32 /s " & chr(34) & "\\QBDomain\netlogon\Cars in Motion script\Picclp32.ocx" & chr(34). This is the path to the netlogon share where the OCX file resides. I not very good with VB script but created a batch file (.BAT) and put the script into there and got the following error when I ran the batch file : "oshell.run is not recognised as an internal or external command. operable program or batch file." "chr is not recognised as an internal or external command. operable program or batch file" Do you know what it could be? Your help is much appreciated.
  13. thanks for that, is that all the code.
  14. Hi to all Hope everyone is well Please help me on a issue we have in our school. The maths department have purchased some software called "Car maths in motion" and its been an absolute pain to install but we have managed to get the software working on the server. As the software sits on a remote share when pupils try to execute the application it comes up with an error: "component picclp32.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid" Basically it means the OCX file needs to be registered on every single workstation using the app. The question I have is there a way I can script something so that when a user logs on it can register the OCX file or is there a third party tool that would do this. Any help on this would be much appreciated. :?

  17. Hi folks. Was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I am looking for a backup program similar to your NT backups, Veritas for windows for a MAC server. We currently have an XRAID which stores all of our pupils work and I want a program which can schedule backups everynight (I currently have to do this manually by copying the folders and dragging them onto the remote share). I have had one suggested which is if I have a .mac account i can backup to a remote share, ideally i dont want to be worrying every year about renewing the account. Does anyone suggest anything else? Thanks
  18. Hi was wondering if someone could help me. I not very good with linux but I will explain the problem and hope someone understands what I am trying to do. Our backup server failed which was a windows server 2003. and all our windows servers and web server which is Gentoo Linux would backup up their data to this backup server. There was a perl script which my predesessor developed which ran on the backup server and it would copy the data from the windows servers fine and for the linux server he mounted the volume onto the backup server and it would create a *.gz file which cotained all the HTDOCS of the linux server and this was the backup of the webserver. I have now purchased a new server with server 2003. installed the same perl scripting software. My predessor left me instructions on exactly how to restore if there was a server failure. But on the new server it not working how it should. On the new server all the windows directories are copying over fine but the Linux share just won't mount. I not very good with linux but briefly know how to access its Webmin software which I access using https://servername:10000 on the linux server. Theres absolutly loads of features and I am not sure if I need to change anything in there. I just dont understand why it doesn't work because it's an exact replica of the old server. I have even used the same computer name as the old one and all the drive letters are exactly the same. Please help!
  19. The fuser unit is removable and i would be interested in purchasing one. if you could pass me your details plexer. Are you a registered company and also do you do 30 day credit or accept cheques as payment ?
  20. Hi was wondering if anyone could assist me with a printer problem we are having. We have a Samsung Ml2250N and its begun to leave a smear mark in the middle of the page. We tried replacing the toner and it didnt make a difference so we effectively dismantled the printer and then gave it a good clean with some compressed air and damp cloths but this hasn't made a difference. Can anyone suggest if there is a certain place in the printer where we need to give it a through clean or could it be something else which we haven't tried. The best way for me to explain the mark is if you have a biro and write something on a piece of paper and then immediatlely run your finger across it, it will leave a smear mark, thats probably the best way for me to explain it. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I have attached a picture to give anyone an idea of what we are getting. apologies for the quality. thanks.

  23. Hi to all We looking to upgrade the client software of ultra VNC to the most up to date version as it supports better security and more for what we need to use it for. The most stable version at the moment is 1.0.2. I was wondering if anyone has already created an MSI for this to roll out via group policy or if there is a site which can show me how to create the MSI. My colleague has been trying but he seems to be having problems with the ultra VNC service. Thanks

  25. In the summer we just purchased some Apple Mac's along with an Xraid and Xserve. All works great but i see a problem for the future...... At the moment the way it is setup is I have all the pupils home directories sitting on a 400gb Windows file server. When pupils logon to both the Windows and Macs they can see there home directories on this server. I can see a problem once pupils start to create large movie files on this server its going to run out of disk space... So I have this new 3.5tb Apple Xraid which I want to utilse better and my plan is to move all the data from our windows server to this xraid and for both windows and apple to see the new location but also whilst moving the data I need it to retain the folder and file permissions. I can see this being done with something like xcopy but have read that sometimes there can be problems as it doesn't copy all the ownership or other permissions. Has anyone moved data from one server to another server and having been able to retain the permissions? is there a script which can do this or an after market solution? Any advice on this will be much appreciated. Thanks
