Maybe! Would i put that in with the batch file or give each drive rename its own vbs script?
-
Hi All. I map all my drives via bat file, a seperate bat file for pupils and staff. Now a teacher expressed an idea that it would be good if i could change the names of the drives from the default path shown to something more friendly. So when you map a drive lets say to \\server\home\ it will show up in my computer as a drive, with the above and the drive assignment. So is there a way to change it to something like "Childrens Work Area (H:)"?

afraid not, run a virus and malware scan on the whole hard disk. Nothing comes up at all. Its like there is a service or process bottlenecking the memory or cpu but the issue is also in safe mode which leads me to beleive something is up with the core of 7. Lost my rc disk so cant do a repair which sucks. Life goes on, was able to salvage my files and such so its not a total loss.

Hi all. Ok ive been using 7 since beta and RC, and have had the RC installed on a acer travelmate 5720 since it was released. Today i switched my laptop on and it took 5mins to login and then the system suddenly went VERY VERY slowly, when i mean slowly i mean it took 1 hour to boot into safe mode, login, move 5 files totalling 2gb from one partition to the other (on the same hdd) and then reboot. Has anyone got an idea what the issue is? everything runs slowly or hangs, my CPU light is constantly on but task manager shows little or no cpu utilization. If i click on something that requires a lot of CPU time it seems to take an age to open. And just in case someone asks if its a hardware issue it isnt as i installed win7 pro to my other partition and its working perfectly. Help

I havent ever heard of a profile or a setting that makes sophos switch computers off.. i have no clue about cc3 networks but sophos itself afaik cant switch pcs off. Have you checked event logs to see if it is sophos shutting things down or another program?

Well as much as id like to tell the teaching staff what to do i cant really i can only configure things how they want it lol. I have said that really they should be teaching the kids what they need to do regards logging in but they say its too time consuming etc hence my idea of a windows xp esque logon screen with boxes for each year group to click and then use their passwords. I know i could do it if i took them off the domain but i dont like that idea.

Well; Teachers often push eta's to head to the ict room to login the class (as mentioned above i already have the same idea with logons yearr, year1, year2 etc depending on what the ict coordinator wants) most have either simple passwords or none. But the eta has to come up login the class then run the program (most time 2simple software or edcity) and get the kids to the right area for them to come in. This school is only reception and y1 and y2 so the lower kids really arent capable of loging in so i dunno, just wondered if there was soething i could do, ah well =-)

take it thats a no then =-)

Hi guys Have a quick question and some theory based stuff. I work primarily in primary schools and have around 200 - 300 devices across 6 schools. I have a large junior school while most of my other schools are mid size juniors/infant schools. Once thing i have found is that teachers and eta's spend a lot of (wasted) time logging machines in and setting them up etc. I wanted to know if there are any other primary oriented techies out there and if they have found any useful tools to help children and teachers alike log into machines and run things quicker etc. Basically i was thinking of something along the lines of some kind of graphical login where you simply click on a box (like the normal non domain xp login) where there is a name and a password box. Then the same requirement for the desktop, i have all the most used icons listed on the desktop i just wondered if there were any cute tweaks people could use etc to make things easier for staff and children alike. Thanks in advance peeps! B

Here we go again! Apologies for digging up my old topic but this is related to the issue above. Since my last post regarding a swap out, i have had one of my supplies come take a look and he surmised a fault usb cable for the smartboard, swapped out this is now working OK however -; The teacher has a usb pen drive that has now stopped working, coming up with the usual usb device not recognized, there is another teacher who doesnt teach much in there but is getting the same with her pen drives. Both pen drives work elsewhere on other machines and i have tried both these pens in the original machine that i shifted into the ICT room and they both work..? I hate these USB issues. Any ideas guys?
-
Wow thats news to me, every install of wininstall ive tried on my new servers just spits its dummy out unless i remove the cable or do the other thing i mentioned, ah well, you live and learn, thanks!
-
Hi. This happens because WinInstall LE has been discontinued by ondemand software and they have disabled registration and installation of any new copies (unless you're smart). This is probably to get you buying their new msi packagers etc. a few ways around this are as above removing your network cable through the install, and also if you already have wininstall installed elsewhere, you can simply go to c:\program files\ondemand\ and copy the wininstall folder there to anywhere you need it, share it, permission it, bobs your new uncle. Unfortunately i didn't get anywhere with those solutions guys, have canned it and just swapped it with a machine from ICT, no usb in the ICT room so itll do, thanks all =-)

Hey Guys. I am in a bit of a conundrum, i have a PC that isn't recognizing any usb devices apart from 1 mouse, the story goes like this: Last week the teacher was using the pc as usual to teach, smb, pen drive etc were all connected and such then she connected a camera and ALL the usb devices stopped responding. Being the smart teacher she is she tried the usual of restarting the machine, then switch off all electrics, leaving for 30 secs and restarting again, no joy. Basically ANY device that uses USB now comes up with "usb device not recognized" unless its the mouse, that mouse works in every port on the pc front and back. I have tried formatting the machine and placing a brand new image onto the pc but still the same issue. Any ideas as im stuck apart from replacing the machine. B

I am currently looking at Computeach for their MCSA and MCSE combined course. The way computeach work has recently been changed a lot so the price has SHOT down. Basically computeach is now totally elearning based, no more travelling down to their in center days etc if you dont want to, you can simply do all your learning online, reading, cdroms etc at home and then book your exams at your nearest prometric center. The way you learn is that you pay per month however you HAVE to take a 1 year minimum contract at the price of 1679 for the year (that figure includes vat), you pay this price regardless of the course(s) you do. If after that year you havent completed the track etc then you pay per month (1679/12) for the remaining time it takes you to complete your track. In that price is: · All course material e.g books, manuals, CDROMs · Full Tutor Support e.g phone, fax, email, · In centre training (practical and theory) · All exams · Licence software · Fully industry recognised qualification · Recruitment service · C.V help · Interview training Hope this was helpful, im making the same play to my SMT so hopefully ill get onto it as the price is unbelieveable

take a look at LNL - Printers For Schools They supply printers for many LEA's and i have just had my first delivered. They supply high end color laserjet printers, namely konica minolta magicolor 5650en and a couple of xerox models. The kicker is you have to purhcase 3 sets of ink from them (~£600) but the toners do 6000 pages for standard carts and 12000 pages for the high cap carts but otherwise the printer is FREE You are free to then go elsewhere for toners but their prices are unbeleiveable cheap, cheaper than anyone i have found in my local area.

i get too much time lately, gives me chance to get ideas around getting the heads of my schools to pay for a MCSE though =-)

Hi Guys. Yes MS have come back to me today. I spoke with Alfie again in Microsofts UK Licensing team, however everything that he said is unofficial. Basically what was said that it had gone away to "RMT"(Who?) for a decision regarding miniframe, they had come back with an incorect response that it should have server licences and cals etc, they sent back the right info stating that it was not a server OS and such and thus they needed to re evluate, the licensing team are still waiting for an OFFICIAL response from them, however the UK licensing team got together and are advising the following: For however many systems etc you are using through miniframe you should have 1x CoA. So 1 miniframe with 6 useable systems means you have to have 6 CoAs. This is not an official response and cannot be quoted as such but this is what the UK licensing team are currently adivising that everyone does. I asked for an ETA from RMT however Alfie said that he will be contacting them to push them along or receive the answer tuesday and he will contact me either tuesday or deffinitely on the wednesday next week. Thats all i have guys, please dont quote anything as i have mentioned several times, its all unofficial at the moment but it is sound advice. B

id certainly agree on the 20-30 bracket per hour, i work in 6 primary schools for a half day per week plus 1 day emergency support if required and i only get £10 p/h from the LEA so id certainly say 20 if not 30 tbh.
-
But what about those of us who dont use vista at all? purely xp across all my schools currently.
-
As far as i understand it especially if the network is done via device cals, it should only be 1 licence per machine but i hate licensing stuff and it always confuses me. I can see there might be an issue, 1 license being split into 5 virtual machines and such and the guy at ms did say that if that is their determination then it should have licenses for each VM. Blah, dunno, interesting peice of software and certainly keeps the cash in the school budget but even so, if we have to shell out another £500 on CoA's then it would still be worth it tbh.

Right just got off the phone with MS and spoke to a very nice gent named Alfie in their business licensing department. basically he said that microsoft are aware of softxpand miniframe software and are looking into the licence implications, they have had to pass it up to "the powers that be" and are awaiting a response which should be somepoint middle of next week. I have passed on my contact details to MS and they have said they will be ringing anyone who has done this regarding this licencing issue etc to let them know of the outcome, so right now there is no details from MS regarding softxpand. Regarding the mouse and keyboard usb thing, i take it you use 6x usb hubs (for 6x machines) and have to have 6x usb free on the actual machine etc? Assuming this is true i take it that a high end motherboard would be required to have that kind of expandability or maybe even a server board for the PCI/USB amounts needed. B

I recently went to an ICT showcase in huddersfield and found a miniframe system being used by 4 kids with digitalbrain primary. I must say i was very impressed with the miniframe stuff and i have already begun following through some quotes for prices and specs etc. Once thing i dont understand is.. well how does it work? you have to have 1 seperate vga card per monitor you use? how do all the mice and keyboards attach etc and sound i dont understand? 1 card for 6 machines? i wish there was a crosseyed emote =-) I plan on contacting microsoft regarding the licensing issue. B

Thanks to both of you, i have made contact with LNL and are discussing things with them, it sounds exactly like you both described and the must buy toners from them set my bells off too but ive seen their prices also and they are pretty cheap. THanks again guys =-)
-
Hi guys. Just want to say - Yes i HAVE searched and seen the other thread regarding LNL and the free printer offer but the last post was nearly 2 years ago and i wanted a fresh discussion. A head in one of my schools has pointed me to the website etc and she swears she has experience with them and that they are very good, the catch is indeed that you have to buy 1x set of toners per year that you have the printer etc and all support repairs etc are free. Can anyone who has had experience with LNL customer service, the free printers for schools program or anyone with general experience of lnl/konica magicolor 5650en printers pipe up? Want to make sure this is proper before i get it plopped on my lap and have to fix a POS printer that i didnt want in the first place etc =-) Btw, didnt know exactly where to put this so if i have infringed, my bad, please shift me in the right direction =-) Thanks again geekers
