In the end i just kept it simple, i have created a new user "W7NC" (Windows 7 Name Changer) and put the .exe in the desktop folder of that users profile, finally i set the user to auto login from the answer file so all we need to do is double click the program, input a machine name, bish bash bosh =-)

Hi Guys A colleague of mine has created us a little program that can change a computers name after the process of WDS has finished, we have our images auto login to a network account so we can change their name and then move them into their right OU's etc in AD. I wanted to make it easier for us than clicking about to rename the computers and as such our coder made us a little program. What id like to do is have this program run on the first login, it needs to be run elevated and im stuck on how to do it either from the answer file or having the shortcut on the desktop. I have tried placing it into the user profile desktop folder so that itll be on the desktop on first login so its a simple right click and run as admin but the profile is named something else upon login. Can anyone suggest a way to do this via the answer file? i considered having a mapped drive done during logon then executing the program but i dont think it is possible to execute a program with elevated priviliges unless doing the right click run as admin etc. Thanks in advance

Thanks all for the input The board is a HP board and i have been told to contact an authorized repairer to get the board and such. chances are, depending on cost i will just get a new server and image the server thanks all again i love edugeek =-)

Hi Guys Quick bit of background on the issue im having: 2 weeks ago one of the 2 hard drives on our server failed, normally not a problem, bob in a new drive and rebuild the raid right? well we purchased a replacement drive from HP and begun the rebuild, unfortunately the drive fails to rebuild on 3% After much tooing and frooing with HP, they have come to the conclusion that the raid controller on the motherboard is on the fritz and as such we need to replace the board. My question is thus: If i purchase a third party PCI raid controller card, place this in the server, take our original drive that has the data and raid on it, and connect it to the new controller, will this controller then detect the raid and that is it degraded and then allow me to add a new spare and rebuild the drive? I am not great with RAID so i thought i would ask those who are in the know Thanks all. B

As mentioned in my OP, i am currently testing a HP MS6200 with 1x t200, 1x plugable Dc-125 and 1x Axel m80 and so far havent had any huge issues. If you have a good read of the documentation that is on the multipoint site it shows that 4 clients or so requires a dual core. anymore is quad and such. This is why im planning on doing the 6-8 clients on the spec i listed in my previous post.

some interesting reading in here for sure. After my initial over zealous aim of 20 machines on one system i think scaling the idea back a bit is probably prudent. I am now considering building 2 machines with multipoint server on and running 6 clients from both of those stations. The only limiting thing is i have a budget of ABOUT 1300 including licensing so what i am thinking is the following: i7 3770 (3rd gen) 16gb ram 1600 ram evga z68 mobo 650w PSU 2x 60gb ssd's

Thanks for the replies guys. Would that amount of zero clients not even work over USB3? we're initially looking at 10 at the moment but may expand it further. So as i understand it id need to run x amount over usb and x over the network as well?

Hey All I recently recieved an eval unit of the Hp multiseat solution and have been using it to test within our ict room. Reason i am posting is, i have been reading the documentation that comes with multipoint server 2011 and from what i understand on the hp solution, it shouldnt really be able to run 10 zero clients based on the spec of the machine. I am putting together a spec that will run a multipoint server for 20 machines, and wondered what you guys thought of the following: Intel Xeon w3690 hex core gigabyte g1 sniper motherboard 16gb ram 2x 10k rpm sata 3 hdd's 850w power supply. I havent settled on which zero client to use just yet as i have another eval unit coming from plugable to test their dc-125 zero client. Thanks for everyones thoughts!

Indeed! Plexer has given me some ideas as an alternative to this tech. I am scheming a beefy machine right now to act as the host as i write =-) Thanks again all. Would still appreciate any and all opinions on the thin clients and such that you guys have though!

Hey Thanks for getting back to me. Ive checked firewalls on the machines and the settings seem fine, tried it off and on with exceptions, both have the same result. The time and date thing could be a possibility, will give it a check sometime today =-) Thanks!

in regards to organizational units, yes they are in a different group, but they are not denied any access to those shares regardless of pc the user is on. so for instance, everyone has read access to the sophosupdate share as, as mentioned in op, all machines pull down the updates that are placed in there by the server. On the ict machines, this works fine, however the laptops and 1 office machine dont seem to like the share edit: i also creatred a secondary update share for the AV but the machines mentioned also dont like that share either.

Hi Guys Having a weird old problem with a few laptops and pc's. We have a windows server (2003 standard) located in the heads office. On this server are a couple of shares, specifically a share titled MSI for all installation packages, and sophosupdate for our where clients download updates to their anti virus. For some reason, all the pc's located in our IT room can find these shares fine. laptops from classes (6 laptops) and the only office machine we have cannot get access to them, although they can ping and see the server by going to \\server When i browse to these shares i get the following error: \\server\msi is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. The network location cannot be reached. Same for sophos update, but as mentioned, all the pc's in the ict room can see these shares fine and access them fine. I have checked permissions, ive even gone so far as to allow everyone access to the sophosupdate share to test to see if its a permissions issue. Wondering where else the issue could lay as ive hit a wall at the mo so any help is much appreciated.

I havent had any issues thus far with EC5 - was very ginger with it in the beginning but since i deployed it at one school im planning on pushing it out at my remaining schools. It seems the web blocking feature is an optional thing, i havent enabled it and had no issues with it so far, another school nearby me reported issues with it enabling itself and the firewall stopping logons but thus far i havent experienced this. Also you can push version 10 from ec 4.7 - just change the subscription and itll get the new binaries. B

[ Not necessarily. I am a primary schools ict tech, been doing this job 5 years in april and i came into this job by being a trainee ict tech for 6 months and a full tech for another 6 months. My job includes everything from pen drives to servers and networks. For instance tonight im installing a managed wireless system consisting of a wireless controller, poe switch and 8 new wireless points. In my opinion id look for a full technician job and then try getting your head down for a couple of years, right now there doesnt seem to be many jobs for managers, maybe thats my area locally but either way, experience in education is your best bet. Id also look at doing something along the lines of a support professional qualification (computeach) which includes ITIL which is a management qual. Either way dont let that stop you applying, only way youll learn if it is/isnt enough is by applying and requesting feedback from the people you apply to. Some will bullshit you, others will offer good advice. Good luck =-)

Hey Nick, Got that issue sorted, just recopied everything and reset it all. I got it working but as i was adding drive maps, something happened to break it again. Instead of messing about i just deleted it all and started again. Anyway, it worked for a while and has now stopped again, again i copied everything over again and checked the setup docs and as far as i can see everything is fine, but whenever i visit the site i get the following: Extracted 7.10 but that has the same issue. Anything ive missed?

Hi Guys First of all want to say that this HAP thing looks great and youve done a great job on it Nick =-) Ive finally got a test hap up and running internally and i think i made a boo boo, i forgot to add the active directory stuff to the site so i cant login, regardless of the username i use be it a domain admin, staff or pupil, i cant get access to hap. Can anyone help? i have tried getting back to the setup.aspx but it just puts me back onto the login screen. Thanks!

Frankly im sick of having to reboot the servers whenever sophos stops updating haha =-) I understand the web filtering or something inside ec5 is causing concern etc so was just looking for an update on when we will be getting the download. Hey Guys Im looking into ways of providing more robust support to several primary schools i currently support. In the last year, mainly due to the invention of netbooks, numbers of clients have exploded in my schools and keeping them all up to date with flash, adobe, java etc etc is becoming quite a chore. I wondered how you guys go about updating all your programs or whatever you need to do in regards to updates for software. I have seen SUMo but that still requires manual interaction to download the update and install it. Being a one man team this sort of thing is starting to take up more and more of my time. Thanks!

Hi guys. Had a thorough look through a laptop im working on and it doesnt seem to have any wake on keyboard or lan options. I am mainly interested in booting the system with a keyboard as the power button will be inaccessible so wondered if anyone knew a way of circumventing the bios since there are no options there.
