Hi Thanks for your reply Roger. I have spoken to one of my suppliers (who i beleive has been in touch with you regarding demo and such). I was not asking about sophos from the point of view of licensing as kirklees purchase sophos in a LEA wide license so we're pretty free to use sophos as many times as we like afaik. The reason i was wondering was because of sophos em console and such i didnt want any incompatiblity and such. i beleive i may be coming down to matlock with my supplier maybe some point next week but with monday being my on call time and no schools being in im not actually at work and therefore not able to do research/come take a peek. I will be coming down most likely sometime in the near future for sure.

Hi Roger THanks for your reply. I think ill be popping up to CCL after work or maybe this weekend depdning on how things go. Do the technical college use just sophos or enterprise console? Also (A quick return to the licensing debate stuff), i just read a ZDNet review of softxpand and basically the article claims that softxpand is actually legal because even though you are using remote desktop in a way, there is only one machine creating the processes etc and therefore it doesnt violate MS's T&C's. Is this correct? Thanks again
-
Seems like i cant get away from the SoftXpand stuff lol. I never got back to this thread because MS never got back to me unfortunately, however i can see a nice debate going on and such and im not here to chime in on that, rather i have some questions about softxpand as im in need of 6 systems at a cheap price, and id like some questions answered if possible. I am replacing some old dead machines and already have motherboards, keyboards and mice, however the keyboards are PS2, i take it you cant use PS2 mice with softxpand? (something about usb hubs or whatever) The machines i purchase will have to go on a domain, is it possible to use softxpand as part of a 2003 domain and will each of the machines from softxpand show up individually in active directory? Same question for sophos enterprise console/em library Final question, can anyone recommend a reseller for a softxpand system? Thanks!

Got it, the reason is cause i had 2003 outlook installed also. Have been having issues with office for a while when i was getting a junk email filter update, this might have been the same issue. Resolved by uninstalling office 2k3 and then rerunning the setup for 2k7, all solved now and my emails back *quickly makes a backup *
-
Sorry my apologies, should have mentioned that. Whereas usually you get run from my comp, run all from my comp, insalled on first use & not available, all i have for outlook is not available, no other choices at all which is where im stumped.
-
Hey guys Switched the old laptop on this morning, booted up email as usual and got the stupid "not implemented" warnings again, so anyway, i ran a repair, havent fixed it. So had a look at the installer and for some reason outlook 2007 has now disappeared from my machine, when i try to run the installer and add remove states that outlook is not available? http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt170/Bluet00/sigh.jpg I have no clue whats going on with it and i cant seem to find the pst folders that store my email.. Any help would be much appreciated! Running windows 7 pro

External Access to school shared drives
Bluetooth replied to Bluetooth's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Hi Guys Bringing this one back from the dead, does anyone have any experience with openvpn.net? sounds like a good idea but im a bit of a miss atm to know how to use it, will have some time after easter to probably work on it but wanted opinions first. Thanks all -
Alright, so it totally depends on price then, the trial i will get from simon will hopefully show me how good these are Thanks again guys
-
that sounds quite impressive but the price sounds a bit costly, i wonder if i could get away with 1 ap per year group? If i could get the network and data put into the center of the year group id guess it would be around 10-13m from windows on all sides and walls would vary but afaik they are plasterboard anyway.
-
Already done my friend. Regarding the Mero or whatever stuff, why should i look at ruckus over their stuff?
-
Oooooooooooooooooooh really? So what would that contain Simon? one of those managed server doodads and an AP?
-
Thanks for the comments. Regarding the ruckus managed stuff, i saw the wap management server or whatever, i take it that just sits in the comms cab and all the AP's just find the settings whatever from there? Also with around 80 netbooks running at any one time (at peak) how many AP's would you go for per unit? just the 1 as these ruckus things seem to be quite strong and smart (watched the webinar and stuff on their website)

Hello All Right, this might be a bit of a long post so bear with me here as i have a bit to discuss and lay out so you can formulate proper opinions/suggestions One of my 6 schools is a junior school from year 3 to 6 and has around 350 on roll. Over the past 4 years we have stuck with 30 machines in the ICT room and wireless points around school. I have spent most of the time over the past 3 years getting new laptops in and making sure the staff can do their job from a teaching point of view. This has now reached a pinnacle insofar as most staff have laptops either 1 or 2 years old. Anyway, we are now moving into updating the ict system for the kids, with the curriculum changing next year we want to move ICT more into the classroom to go with the discrete ICT subject. So basically we're looking at expanding the wireless in the school to accomodate more netbooks that the kids can use. The school is laid out in the most perfect way i can think of really, its a square with 4 more squares on each corner making up the year group units. As below http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt170/Bluet00/schoolwifilayout.jpg The red splodges are current wireless points (3 linksys WAP54G's and 1 Netgear WAG102 - there is also 1 wap54g in the staff room but no children go in there only staff) Currently we only have 6 netbooks (on top of around 15 staff laptops or so), however we're obviously looking to expand this to more netbooks for child use. I think to be honest we'd be looking at a peak of maybe 15-20 netbooks per year group (maybe more) so obviously we need a wireless system that can handle the hammer. I have heard that some schools use this ruckus with the smart antennae array or something and what to get peoples opinions on that initially, also any other things i should look at. I am planning on maybe 2 - 3 wireless access points per year group or if i dont need to have 2 - 3 wireless points maybe 1 - 2 points that can handle the load as mentioned above. At other schools i have had good experiences with Netgear WPN802t's (a/b/g/n) and i am currently running 15 netbooks on 2 of these points without any issues with reliability/connectivity so these would be my first port of call but i wanted to investigate other possibilities. Thats about all the plan i have so far, would love to hear peoples opinions and also any good/bad things about ruckus (also what it is tbh) and any other wireless i could look at.

I think i have the wrong boot image, i did as you said but the same thing happens, a vista ish background and then a command prompt with wpeinit being executed, nothing happens however suppose id best find a boot image from an actual dvd not the AIK
-
i see, thanks for that. Back to my initial question of how you capture the file in a .wim though?
-
never used RIS so it wasnt installed, have setup WDS in native mode and didnt know you couldnt push xp images so thats why i started setting it up, im setting up MDT now. Quick question though, is this MDT used to deploy images or setup machines on the fly? id much rather just setup the image with everything it needs and let it run over the network than have it setup the os, then copy drivers & apps to install etc etc
-
Thanks for that, im looking into downloading it and such now. The high school by me is pushing XP images via WDS from what i have been told they dont use this MDT thing but then again they have no clue as some external company set up the servers. Installed the MDT thing on my server now and am just messing with it.

Hello all! Im probably going to catch some brown stuff for posting this but im at a loss with WDS really. Anyway, i have read microsofts supposed step by step guide on how to setup WDS, now i have it installed on a server, and i downloaded the AIK which supposedly had the install.wim and boot.wim files (it only had the boot.wim file). Few things im stuck on, do i _need_ to have the install.wim image or can i just create one? how do i actually create an image? i have installed the AIK on my laptop but i dont clearly see how to create an image. I have had a machine boot over the network using the boot.wim file but when it boots i just get a command prompt and nothing else I worked out how to do the sysprep stuff so on that point im ready to run the creation of the image but as ive said above im a bit stuck on where to go from there Im wanting to deploy windows xp over the network using WDS, i have 5 schools that could benefit from this especially if we had images ready to go =-) My apologies for being such a nub, havent had a LOT of time to research this properly and i thought id come ask the people in the know =-)

External Access to school shared drives
Bluetooth replied to Bluetooth's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
The terminal server stuff is like remote desktop im assuming? Ive been pushed in the way of batley girls system, if you go to their website (batleygirls.co.uk) and down in the bottom right there is a "remote desktop" link that then goes to a page with an active x on it to connect to their server and such using remote desktop web connection, thats probably something we would like ie giving them their desktop when they login in and such however i dont know how files could be transfered etc -

I have used logmein before however the LEA has blocked this and unfortunately as far as i can remember logmein free doesnt allow you to copy/paste files and such? I think tbh we'd want something more like that salamandersoft webparts thing which looks quite good and has links to shared documents and such so extra areas can be setup for the head to drop files etc -
External Access to school shared drives
Bluetooth replied to Bluetooth's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
we dont have a sharepoint server hgowever with us looking at the ICT Mark at the moment we're currently putting things together for our vision so maybe this could be something we could mention -
Hello All. A couple of ict coordinators and heads have expressed an interest in having the shared files available over the internet so they can be accessed at home. Initially for staff but then for children also so they can do work and such from home and even submit work from home. I have spoken with our LEA and they say that we can have an external IP address that will allow us to open up access to the server etc but they want more information on what exactly we're going to do before they allow us to move forward. Basically i have no idea where to start, i havent ever done anything like this and would be stupid not to look for help/advice on this. Basically i wondered about using Remote Desktop Web Connection or VPN but obviously VPN means that youd have to set things up on the teachers machine which wouldnt be a huge issue however doing it for 1000+ children would be quite a mission so id rather go down the option of having a website pointing to the IP and using active directory for authentication etc. What should i be looking into and where should i go to read up on the stuff like this?

Thanks Synack, i will have a look into this next week!
