Hello! Firstly a little about myself. I am 24 years old, i have been in the educational ict support business for the last 3 years. I started out as a trainee ict technician and was soon promoted to a full technician (6 months). From there i spent a further 8 months advancing my knowledge with an aim to become a network manager. Since then i have been working for 7 Primary Schools and 1 high school offering ICT support and managing all the primary schools needs myself. I am a well educated hands on and client facing IT Technician with over 3 years experience within the educational sector. Experiences include price gathering, procuring, implementation, configuration, training, technical support, repairs, warranty issues, server maintenance/monitoring, Server installation/configuration and server repair. I am looking for a new challenge and i am willing to take on anything that is thrown at me, i am a very outgoing gentlemen and am very good with people, i can work well alone or in a team and can provide superb references and a CV on request. Preferably i would like to work in a high school as a NM however i am willing to take a look at anything that people are willing to offer, if you think i can meet youre requirements then please get in touch. Lol, thanks but thats not what im after. Right. heres the long winded explanation. I have a redirected start menu stored on \\gateway\netlogon\startmenu\ underneath there is a folder called programs which is obviously where all the shortcuts and stuff are located. Now on the xp start menu there is an area underneath the internet and email shortcuts where the personalized menu usually is, however i have disabled that because i want to provide my own set of shortcuts for quick access. So basically i want to know how to do the above and where i should store the shortcuts for them to appear in that area/what to enable etc Tanks for your attempt though =-)

Hi Guys. I have a quick question Im using the standard Xp start menu that is redirected to allow only the programs the school wants for the kids to use. What i want to do is have certain shortcuts show in the most used area underneath internet and email. I have seen this done elsewhere but dont have a clue how to do this. Thanks in advance

Both. I make sure PC's come with a front mounted audio board. Plug the monitor in the back of the PC as usual but when a child needs some headphones they pick up a set from one of the hooks in the ICT Store and plug it in the front, mutes the output from the speakers on the monitor. As mentioned desk speakers are just a waste now, theres no need as all lcds pretty much come with them in built.

I use WinInstall LE 2003 for all my MSI'ing needs. Its a free version from a long time ago as you can see. It stil runs well and is VERY easy to use Stored on the server you browse to the msi creators directory, run a discovery wizard to scan the Hdd for settings, then install the software after the first scan, run the software, input codes whatever etc, run the after scan and it picks up all the changes from registry, files etc and makes the MSI for you. Easy software, hard to get a hold of, i have it backed up everywhere so i dont lose it lol, if you need it emailing just drop me a PM with your address.

Yea i setup a profile yesterday on the network and just did a quick test with auto loigin for education city and digital brain which worked fine, so i was like, yea ive played with profiles, i can sort that out easily but we'll still have to use gpo's for things like locking down the start menu and accessing the c drive etc and shes like nope they cant get into it.. i was like.. well how? if it isnt locked down whats stopping them? I think she understands the IDEA of profiles and such but not the actual aspects that go into everything else like protecting the network and such. I dread having to put wireless keys on each WAP we use and if something happens for the laptops to forget them ill just go nuts

THanks all for your input, you have helped me look at some issues that i wouldnt have thought of, especially the maintenance costs and such. One thing i want to ask is, if i setup mandatory profiles and stuff so that they cant change their profile or whatever, what about breaking the system like formatting the c: drive and such or deleting files from the c drive. Obviously these can be sorted by GPO but the head has said she doesnt want me using GPO's.. so im like what should i do then? THanks again

I would also try running RSOP to see whats going on and why it isnt installing.

Hey Geekers. Im doing a bit of research at the moment into mandatory profiles and such and wanted to get some input into my situation from you seasoned veterens. One of my schools is looking into getting rid of the ict suite and all desktop based computers in the school (bar the office obviously) and purchasing around 60 laptops for all school. These will obviously tied to several wireless points strategically placed around the school. I have been told that using mandatory profiles etc is the best way to go with this kind of setup but i dont see the point? Everything i am being asked to do has already been done by group policies etc, why should i choose to go with mandatory profiles over the usual way im already doing things? Also my second question is, should i try to stay on the cheap and get wireless points that cost £35 a peice and just place 1 - 2 in each classroom or go for higher end enterprise stuff (Hp ProCurve wireless points etc) as these have better range and can handle more clients etc. We would have to purchase around 15 WAPs if we went cheap to support that many laptops. Are there any other considerations i should taken into account? amount of time for software installs, msi possible over the wireless network, maintenance, upkeep etc? Im looking for some sort of software to monitor and log the internet usage in one of my schools, does anyone know of a good program that would do it? I was also wondering if setting up a proxy on the curriculum server that forwards onto the main LEA proxy would work and have our local proxy track internet usage and log it? is this a good idea? Thanks for any input guys.

This is an interesting feature deffinitely, i currently use truecrypt to encrypt usb pens but if the staff member needs to use their pen drive in the ict suite or on the network at all they cant because of the limited privaliges they get and such cannot install the driver or mount the usb pen into windows. This would cut out a lot of ballache if the encryption technology is good enough and secure enough for what we need.

No problem =) had this happen to 5 laptops and 4 PC's, that was a fun day. Id suggest running a virus scan as i am pretty sure it was sometrhing to do with the above mentioned virus, however since that happened ive had no issues with the machines that the fix was applied to =)

Hi guys I have had this problem across my whole school. I think this was related to the Autorun-JN virus that sophos picks up. To fix the problem you need to edit the registry on every machine that is affected, follow these instructions: start -> run -> type in regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> MICROSOFT -> WINDOWS NT -> CURRENT VERSION -> IMAGE FILE EXECUTION OPTIONS Look thought the list of .exe files and youll find a "explorer.exe" process, you need to rename this process to something, doesnt matter what as it will create a new explorer process, i renamed all mine to explorir.exe Dont know why this happened but once i followed this fix all the machines came back up and running. Give that a bash and let me know how it goes =)

Looks nice but i havent had much time to play with it, also have had to install it on a VM with a minimum amount of ram and processor power. Really need to find a spare laptop i can abuse as i dont fancy sticking it on my gaming machine at home =) From what i have tried i do like but i really dont like the vista esque start menu, just bring back the XP one, that worked fine and looked better imo than the vista one. Taskbar grouping of items without text is different, quite hard to differentiate between quick launch items and running programs however. all in all, so far, its a deffinite improvement on vista

Hi TeachForFun Some boards have the serial number located in different places. First place to check is underneath the board on the right hand side. If not there check down the right hand side of the board. If still not there the best bet is taht the number is located UNDER your pen tray, this maens releasing your pen tray from the board and really something that your technician should be doing. Also your school should have 1 code that they use for all boards, there is no need to input individual codes for each teacher as 1 smartboard serial number is enough to run many smartboard 10s My suggestion is for you to speak with your schools technician and ask him what the code si for smb10, if he doesnt have one, ask him to find yours underneath the pen tray. Hello all! Recently one of my heads asked that i look into an "E-Beam" system that we are thinking about using in our new temp classroom that is going to be coming into service in the next couple of months Now we have had a demo model from e beam which i wasnt impressed with but the teachers did seem to like it, however the head isn't willing to make a final judgement without seeing the kit being actually used in a lesson etc. Basically the school i work for is located in dewsbury around the WF12 postcode, are there any schools out there that have these e beams in and would be willing to allow the head from my school to come visit yours and have a look at the kit in use?
