Hello all I am looking to buy an entry level server for a school that has a VERY tight budget. We are currently updating the ICT suite that hasnt been updated for 6 or so years and currently has very old donated machines. Were installing a 660i smartboard with 8 up to date well specced machines and 2 printers. It would be a shame not to have a server watching over them all etc and providing the school with a superb asset in storage and backup solution none of which they have anyway I have been told they i can get a nicely specced Fuji Siemens Econel 100 server, it has a xeon 3350 processor, 2gb ram and 2x 160gb in RAID 1 for £499, and around £110 for server 2003 standard R2. Has anyone got any experience of the Fuji Siemens Econel 100 server? i have a HP ProLiant server that was bought in summer and its a beast, but it cost around £2500 and this school does NOT have this budget. £499 is stretching the budget!

problem, dont know what the type was in the first place.... are all pen drives the same? FAT?
-
Hi all. I have a pen drive here that has lost its partition table. As usual its kicking up the "not formatted" message and all the files are gone. Basically wondered if anyone has used any software to recover these and if so could they provide a link please? Its NOT been backed up :/

At my local high school they have just done an LRC room and used computers that sit inside desks. Basically you have a desk space with a area in the middle that flips up and allows access to monitor keyboard and mouse. The tower sits inside a secure cabinet underneath the desk physically attached to it. I dont know the actual name or whatever but thats what we have, they are very cool and very secure since each unit ties into the next one, so if you have 2 banks of 10 desks, no one on earth will be able to nick them.

Morning! Yes sleeping on it has chilled me out a fair bit but im still pretty mad. I dunno what to do, i just cannot work with this line manager. Yesterday's little episode has made me feel totally unloved and like im making all this effort for nothing. I get plenty of good feedback from the heads and i am providing 200 times what the last technician was providing but i still feel like im being fobbed off. I really enjoy the job im doing and really enjoy working with the people i work with but i really feel downdrought and everything. Im not so mad today just more disappointed. What would be a good course of action? Do as advised and try to seek another LM or just continue to work with him or just give it up as a bad job, get my p45 and find another job?

Right, i went to see my line manager today to discuss the contract i had proposed and all the details i have found out from you guys and other sources. Basically he told me to STFU. Its the first time he has been around as he has been off for 6 months or so and now he is back he has said that everything i've found out is utterly stupid (his quote) and that i shouldnt be so stupid (again his quote) It basically turned into an arguement and i wanted to walk out but i had to see someone else. i feel really disillusioned now and really feel like my line mamager doesnt give a toss about me, i have brought things up in the past that i thought were in my schools best interests and he has done this before having a go at me shouting etc calling me stupid. Think this might be a P45 month.

Thanks, thats certainly useful. Could you PM me how you worked these figures out? Thanks

Contink, any chance you could run some numbers for me? 2600n: 4x carts black (£40 ex vat) yellow cyan magenta (£44 ext vat each) no drums to replace normal bog standard a4 copy paper (votopaper or something i think its brandname is) i have a couple of Oki's in schools also and i darnt even think how expensive they are cause the toners just cost so much.

Heh if only, i had to work on a projector yesterday that looked like it hadnt been cleaned for years, it had a thick layer of dust on it, i blew it out and i swallowed a gob full of horrible old child skin, not nice at all but i had to take out 4 security bolts on a projector cage that basically when loose just dropped to the floor, taking out 4 bolts and holding it at the same time was a peice of masterful dexterity on my part i think ;P

Uh its a bit complicated. Basically tuesday to friday (except wednesday AM 8 - 12) all the schools get half a day each. Monday is an On Call day for me to work around my schools and do the highest priority jobs etc wednesday morning set aside again to catch up on anything missed + meetings with senior management at whatever schools. I usually tend to do teaching support on a thursday morning as long as i have nothing to do at that school but recently things have been picking up with quotes and jobs etc so i havent done much teaching and also theres been no kids to teach in the ICT room. I normally help them out with Dazzle and thats about it, teaching them keyboard and mouse control etc.

Yep 18k is deffinately too low for a NM. My NM is on 24k and he mainly focuses on procurement, the staff under him do the implementation and testing etc. I look after 7 primary schools, with: 200 - 250 curric machines 70 - 80 laptops 30 - 50 smartboards 60~ projectors 10 - 15 admin office machines And im currently on 16.4k, i am told im being put up to 17.4 this month though. On the teaching front, at some schools there is less to do than others, i will lend a hand teaching in those lessons, show kids where to click how to do something etc
-
Yea indeed. It looks like im going to have to do some training sessions with all my staff and try to get them to understand why this causes problems etc. Although id rather just have the schools fork out for the cleaning and maintenance contract then i dont have to go through all this stupid crap. im suire £55 per projector is easier than training me to climb a ladder buy all the kit and do whatever other courses there are out there that are required to do the job.
-
Good lord. Well thats interesting. i have never used a pair of stepladders ever. I just use chairs or tables or whatever is in the room at the time to sort the projector out. Sounds to me like i need more money for all this hassle

Lol@Elsie. Lucky for some eh? I have a contract in the works thanks with a company that i have known and my schools have used for the past 6 years so thanks for the offers. About this working at hieght stuff, is there really a course about that? Your kidding me right? I usually just stand on a chair and take the cage apart on my own etc

My JD is purely ICT Technician, theres no admin/MIS side of things even stated in it. I am sat reading it right now and there IS an administration part of the JD but it states: operate an efficient system for storage and distribution or hardware and software discs. maintain an inventory oragnize repair or replacement of ICT equipment, AV equip and reprographics equip. make petty cash purchases etc receive and check dliveries thats all i have under my administration part, ive looked through the rest and i think if i am going to be asked to do this course etc, as mentioned i might ask for a review. I still think it si stupid having an ICT Technician be responsible for a system that is simply out of his control, very silly.
-
i have done the blowing them out thing but frankly, no thanks, i have just taken over the job and they have never been maintained so im looking at 2 - 3 years or more dust ive had gob fulls of dust and dont cherish the idea of sweaty childrens dead skin cells in my mouth thanks =P air duster ftw =P

Hello all! I am a technician and look after 7 primary schools in and around dewsbury/batley area. Now, several of my schools have finally migrated over from the old client integris to the web based integris g2. I am being told over and over that as an ICT technician i should have to do a course related with G2 so i can use it. But as far as i understand my job i dont have anything to do with any systems hosted outside of my networks. I can make sure that the machines are setup to use integris and that they can access the integris website but do i REALLY have to do this course? I was advised by my line manager not to go near integris and im trying to follow his advice but the heads are beating me back. Any advice?

Hello all! I have a quick question, for everyone. I look after 7 Primary schools in and around dewsbury/batley. All in all we have 65 projectors with smartboards and IWB's. Now, i have taken this job over and in the last year i have had to do a lot of work revamping systems and getting networks/anti virus's up to date since the last technician was a tad lax. Either way, i want to know, what do you guys do, please just list whatever you do, im looking to see how you guys handle your maintenance in your own schools etc. Also i would like to know if you buy in support for the maintenance and how much you pay. Thats only if you buy it in, if you do it yourself no need to list your hourly rate to brag ;P Thanks in advance guys.
