we have a single flat /16 with about 2500 devices, which is "fine because we have a 10gb network" and its "easier to manage"

we use disk to disk then disk to tape currently using a single lto4 drive, but have just taken delivery of a dell tape library 50 tape autoloader and 50 lto5 tapes, which is on my list of things to get set up asap.

I might get one and put it in my laptop to have a play. Does it just present itself to the system as a single drive?

we are a private school with an ample budget for providing the best we can afford though.

so SSD is a moot point here then? Or do dell supply them if you ask specially?

We lease our laptops so they are all just going back and being refreshed with new. @nephilim, that is pretty much the spec i had come up with except the 8gb and 500gb. Interesting comments about the HDD size. Is a 500gb drive really that much more expensive than a 320gb? Hadnt considered SSD though, are they not still really expensive? Regarding RAM, all staff have adobe CS5 on their laptops, and RAM is so cheap anyway, surely it wont matter if its 4 or 8? And who is to say what windows 8 or office 2012 will require. Better to have too much now than too little in a year and a half? We tend to go for complete overkill at our place for most things. @Millgate, Ill wait till the dollar is near parity with the pound and maybe take you up on the offer, thanks.

We are going to be replacing all of our staff laptops with a new model fairly soon. Currently we give them a Dell Latitude E6400. These have been great, however the only complaint we have is that they are a bit too eavy. I'm inclined to stick with Dell simply due to the Pro Support which has been priceless. So the question is, what Dells are there on the market today, that would be good for the next 3 years till we replace them again. Looking for something that is not too heavy, has a Cd/DVD drive, probably 8gb Ram and 500gb disk, and most importantly, decent battery life.

shes smothered herself in cammomile and thats taken the pain staight away, thanks. also bought some antihistamine tablets and gel, so hopefully she will be OK. Thanks all for the other suggestions, might try the althelete foots stuff just to see if that works.

im over in asia just now for a holiday with my sister but shes struggling really badly with a rash she has got she is calling prickley heat. She reckons she gets it in the sun whenever she goes on holiday but its really bad just now. Anyone know if this is a common thing, or if theres a cure? Shes really struggling.

@markuk thanks, gave it a try but it didnt have any luckj finding the partition. Cant try a usb card reader dont have one, and im on an island in thailand just now so only got my laptop with me.

got an sd memory card here that when you plug it in to the laptop, windows says it needs formatting. Its got a whole load of photos on it we need to get back, how can i repair it? tried revuva but as theres no FAT its not even letting me scan..

when i first got here i couldn't believe the amount of fatalities that were on the roads. I found the figures astonishing. But then after thinking about it, I dont think I ever recalled the amount of fatalities on the UK roads being widely published / advertised. Also, Ive figured that the reason they are so high here are 1) the massive distances between destination (just nipping to melbourne for the day isnt uncommon (10 hr each way)) 2) because of the long durations between rains, the roads build up with all sorts of oil and grime, making them especially slippy when it does rain 3) insurance is bought for a car, not for a person, so its not uncommon to see 17 year olds still on their "Ps" (google it) driving round in their parents cars way too powerful Perhaps a native Aussie can supplement this?
