[ubuntu] advanced vpn / routing / iptables help please
RabbieBurns replied to RabbieBurns's topic in *nix
Ive got the client -> remote server VPN working, and using the client as the default gateway I can now get all local subnet to ping the entire remote subnet and beyond. My questin is if I want to do the reverse, and have the remote subnet be able to ping this one, do I need to set up another client-server VPN session coming the other way, or can I use the existing VPN tunnel? The routing table on the remote is this: root@linux:~# ip route show default via 192.168.2.1 dev eth0 metric 100 10.8.0.0/24 via 10.8.0.2 dev tun0 10.8.0.2 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 10.8.0.1 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.2.49 Can this be achieved by just adding some more static routes? -
theres a 3rd party app that works pretty well that does it. http://download.cnet.com/windows/3055-20_4-10907413.html?tag=pdl-redir

Use wireshark and it will highlight eveyrhitng colour coded. You can spot the broadcasts a mile off and if something is flooding its even more obviois,. It will show source MAC and IP address which will let you track down the rogue device pretty easy. we had a hp 2600 shot itself, it was sending out a dhcp request and ignoring the replies and flooding the network with dhcp req's. Found and isolated it pretty promtpt.y

Ive just ended up going with a full disk backup option backing up the entire server. Using shadowprotect server. Not Symantec.

drag the app from the top of the screen down to the bottom and it closes it. Works with mouse and touch. You can change the theme in the settings somewhere to change the colours.

Is it? I had read it was best practice for SQL and Exchange but hadnt read it was best practice for everything. I might need to redo my infrastructure,.,. -

Ip forwarding is enabled already. Here are the commands i have tried so far: 12 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.3.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE 15 iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o tun0 -j ACCEPT 34 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE 35 iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o tun0 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT 36 iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o tun0 -j ACCEPT here is the current routing table 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 10.8.0.6 10.8.0.1 via 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 78.1.2.3 via 192.168.3.1 dev eth0 192.168.3.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.3.50 192.168.2.0/24 via 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 10.8.0.0/24 via 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 0.0.0.0/1 via 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 128.0.0.0/1 via 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 default via 192.168.3.1 dev eth0 metric 100 works fine from the local machine but i just dunno how to make it so other local hosts can use the vpn link.. Problem is i dont really know what im meant to be setting so an easy interface or command line doesnt really make a difference i dont think as im not sure what to set -
Ive got an ubuntu box that is an OpenVPN client which is connected to an openVPN server. It is set to redirect the gateway so all internet traffic goes through the VPN. From this client I can ping all the other remote clients on the other network, so that part is all set up and configured correctly. What I would like to achieve now though, is to have a couple of other local clients at this end, to use the local ubuntu box as its gateway, and so each of these clients will be able to ping the remote clients, and will have their internet traffic through the VPN. Im just not sure what I should be configuring on the local ubuntu box to allow it to act as a router to handle the other local client traffic.. Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated please

Ive just installed this (2012) for the first time and Ive never used it before. I want to do basically hardware and software inventory, and use some of the server monitoring tools and log checking abiliities, I dont know where to begin.. Is there a textbook or a website with a beginners guide to this, or a blog or a post on here anyone has written up? Thanks in advance

Is anyone using windows 8 on a Dell Latitude ST tablet? Its only an atom so Ive had to use the x86 version, but I think one of the drivers is causing it to crash and then get stuck in an endless bootloop. Cant even boot to safe mode. Ive used the win7 drivers off the dell website as Im guessing they are close enough, just not sure which one is borking the install. It crashes with IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or such

Once I discovered the right click where the start button used to be and found that hidden menu it became a lot easier.

I was going to post about it in the w8 thread but ill post here first. Have you tried w8 using the liveID? How does that work for user based group policies and mapped drives etc? Or does it not give them any of that and just their skydrive?

@plexer but surely if they have logged into the school machine, its the same password then for live@edu if you are syncing passwords? I opened a support ticket in march 2011 and asked about SSO and this was the reply so i guess the future is now if they have implemented it. I will re-open a ticket. So is there a management agent for FIM now? I wonder if its worth upgrading as the only 2008 Server I have left is my ILM server I wouldnt mind getting it up to 2008R2. But then again, if it aint broke dont fix it.. its been working fine since I first set it up in feb2010 I dont really want to make any more work for myself.. But single sign on sounds promisng if they have implemented it now, can yhou polint me in right direction please?
-
@garethedmondson you can use ILM to automatically provision accounts from AD but it takes a bit of setting up, and costs a little bit. Its set and forget though, once its all done you dont need to go back to it at all. not sure about how to migrate the existing mailboxes but yes it is completely possible passwords cant be migrated per se but you can enable password sync, and password changes are synchronised, again this is done by ILM. SSO not really, once they log in to windows, they need to then log in again to windows live. You can however link live@edu to moodle which is good.

how do you boot into safe mode ?? Im stuck in a boot-loop ;/

not sure if anyone else has posted this yet, but earlier on in the thread i asked how to close a fullscreen metro app on a non-touch device. Solution is to click at the top of the screen and drag down, and it closes the metro app.

I really dont see what the issue is with regards to using it on a desktop. Ive installed it on a Dell Latitude ST tablet, and for that the metro interface and apps are fine, but on a laptop, Ive removed all the metro apps from the 'start' menu, pinned server manager, run, and cmd to the taskbar, and have a few icons on the desktop. Ive been using it as my main laptop now for 2 days at work and there really is minimal difference in useability. Obviously using it in Desktop mode, but I have actually had 0 reason to even go into metro mode. For those who launch their apps with windows+R, which is what i do mostly, this still works. There are only minimal additions that make it better than windows 7, apart from the ribbon in explorer (enabling hidded files and file extensions was 2 clicks, rather than drilling down through tools, folder options, etc etc you just click view, and theres a tick box for hidden files), and a few other things like task manager and file transfer windows etc, I really dont see the big deal a lot of you are making. Im not sure if Im using it the wrong way, but to me it seems obvious the metro interface and the metro apps are for a tablet, and desktop mode with normal programs are for the desktop mode. EG, windows+r, mstsc, to run remote desktop is exactly the same on this as it was in win7. Now on the tablet i use the remote desktop app, and its a nice easy touch interface to connect through to the servers. Im gonna be using this for the forseeable future on my laptop. Just need to find a way to get it to load straight to the desktop mode rather than the metro interface, anyone know if thats an option?

It would be nice if they were in pdf or .docx that I could actually print and read through.. I find technet is really hard to read with everthing is hyperlinks to the next part..

Rather than classroom booking, I am looking at a way of organising Asset Booking. So when staff borrow like portable projectors, cameras, and stuff they can request and book them out. I guess it would have to be web-based Ideally somehting that will integrate into AD to get users, dont mind if I have to pay for something I just want something that is quick and simple to set up, and easy to use. Suggestions please?
