Does the caddy you're using have its own power supply (VS being powered by USB)? If it's powered by your PC's USB, it could be a power budget issue and using a separately powered caddy or going through a mains powered USB hub might fix it.

If it's just Docs/stuff and you're not running anything from the drive, then does it matter if the comptuer let's it spin down when it's not being used? Or is the problem that it then doesn't turn back on (or turn on quickly enough) when you need it? Would the comptuer support a 2.5" drive? You could pick up a 2tb 2.5" drive for a bit under £100, not much price difference to upgrade to an SSD while you're at it.

I assume you've already disabled "USB Selective Suspend" and "Turn off Hard disk after..." in the power plan, and uchecked "Allow computer to turn this device off" in Device manager (might be worth checking you've got that set for both the external drive and the USB controller).

Why do you want teachers' laptops filtered differently than their other devices? Last time we were looking at wifi I had one vendor pitch a single SSID setup, everything would go through NPS, your domain devices would NPS based on machine account/certificate and staff, studetnts and visitors would authenticate using user account NPS linked to their AD accounts and you would manage visitors in AD. For all the user auth devices, NPS then passes the username onto the web filtering so the logged in user gets their "normal" level of web filtering (the same as when they log into a domain jioned device). In the end we went with separate guest, domain and BYOD SSIDs, but I wouldn't want any more than that and I still wonder if we could merge the domain and BYOD SSIDs and let NPS sort out VLAN access.

Where are you guys logging in? I can navigate around all the vods and course signups without being prompted to log in. [Edit] Never mind, found it. Also can't log in.

Never put anything in place here. Not really got a problem with a student logging into the teacher/IWB pc in classrooms, and that students shouldn't be in staff work rooms (or break rooms) isn't realy an IT issue, at least until they put access control on the staff work room doors.

Depends, if they'r right on the edge (7th gen), then you'd be better putting them into a buyback scheme for £100ish off a new machine, as that extra year is going to make them too old. At least for HP and Lenovo buybacks (I think).

At school, we got rid of the last regualr windows 10 machines over the summer (had to make sure we disposed of them as we took them out, otherwise we'd have been pressured into redeploying them like last summer's "upgrade"), so windows 11 for all the workstations and win10 LTSC for xibo and cctv monitors (as neither of those things work properly on linux). At home, the desktop's been on windows 11 since christmas 2021 (was already hardware comepatibile so I didn't see any point in waiting), and the laptop got upgraded in a black friday deal last year.

Our free flu voucher scheme moved to voucher express last year and it was a pretty awful transition, by the sounds of it most people never managed to get an appointment. But they changed a bunch of things for this year and it was great, had my voucher pretty much before we broke up for the summer and was booked in for the jab in early September.

You can over-ride this for specific sites up to 25.6TB per site in the SharePoint admin center.

In most places, we replaced most of our "terminated faceplates" with brush-pates during the last refurb. So now we can run single cables from the PC direct to the board. It's been much more reliable for us (although I don't know how much replacing the standard 3m cable loom that came with the boards would have helped on it's own).

TBF, the social media stuff would probably have come our way if we hadn't got a company in to redo the school's website and social media into an integrated whole. All the stuff really drives the "social media as a whole school responsibility" policy, which has worked great for us.

Has anyone else had any problems with emails sent to parents through Bromcom coming through to the parent slightly garbled recently. In parts it like it's come out of a bad auto-translate, in others it just looks it it was typed up by someone wearing mittens. (It looks fine in our coms logs) For example: "To allow time to prepare" has become "Toh alo time to perparer" and "the Curriculum Area they would like to be based in" has become "the curriculum area to like the world is based in" (yes, it did change the capitalisation of Curriculum Area).

Aside from one time when we helped schedule posts to go out over the holidays, and helping with passwords every now and then, no. We steer well clear of that one. Teachers are the ones that know what cool stuff the school is doing so they're the best placed to post about it.

We looked at Teams phones, but the teachers were too worried about getting dinged with calls in the middle of lessons. Did you do anything technical to help with this, or would it just be training?

A lot of Lonely Mountain Downhill and some Lonely Mountain Snow Riders at the moment. (is it still single player when I'm doing the global leader board challenges?) Looking forward to Silent Hill f and (tentatively) Bloodlines 2, and just found out there's a sequel to Strange Horticulture.

Currently we've got 1gb/1gb main and 500mb/1gb backup. We're looking at dropping the backup to 200mb this time and definitely moving to active/active load balancing. We're seeing around the £400-500pm mark for 1gb/1gb leased line.

Our HR stuff is on (or being moved to) a restricted SharePoint site with all sharing disabled, and extra DLP policies applied. Theoretically with all the DLP polices and sensitivity labels, the data has more protection applied to it now than when it was on a local file server.

The Hack on ITV-X looks really interesting (starts on the 24th) ITV-X picked up a lot of cool stuff over the summer. If you're into conspiracy thrillers, Rabbit Hole is worth checking out.
