It's funny though, this was my dads 'first project' when he retired 10 years, so we clubbed together and bought him a slide scanner. Think he got about 50 done and then decided 'lifes too short' and got on with other stuff. He still does a few now and again, like last week when it was snowing, so get the odd tech support phone call as he can't remember how to use the scanner.

It really depends what you are doing with it. If I was running an e-commerce site I would get one of those green address bar ones and if we bring SIMS Learning Gateway in house rather than being hosted I would use one for that. If you are wanting it to use SSL with Exchange for activesync/web access then for most deployments you need a UCC certificate, you also need to look if single or wildcard certificates are best value for you if you have multiple sites. If you speak or mail their Manchester office I found them extremely helpful.

Ok, how exactly are you doing the routing between VLANS? I presume you've set up the routes on one of the switches and using that as your default gateway?

Depends on the quality you want. If you are looking at very high quality results then have a look around for a second hand Nikon Coolscan with Digital Ice Cubed. Check it's USB as some older ones are SCSI. Have a great retirement :-)

I think this can be done with the broadcom and intel network management utilities if I recall corectly, certainly one of them does it but you need that manufacturers nic in the pc/server. Edit: Yep, can be done with the Broadcom Server Manager which can be installed on a workstation as well as long as it has a broadcom nic. You just create a team, add the nic then you have the option to create multiple VLAN connections through virtual adaptors. This is very usefull if you don't want to route between LANS but still need certain machines to access them.

Software: All software in school will need to be checked with the software company about transferring. Most suppliers it's just a case of completing a transfer form eg Microsoft, some the licence cannot be transfered and will have to be re-purchased. Hardware: These also need checking as you may need to transfer ownership of the equipment, some it may invalidate the warranty. Domains: They will need transfering to the Academy. Equipment Leases/Rentals: These will either need transfering or buying out. Oh the joy...

You set up a localbiz portal site and use it as part of the curriculum in business studies to create a local community site and get local businesses to advertise on it and you get the revenue from the charges to the businesses who advertise on it. You just create a link to it from your main website and promote it to parents. Works very well, ours gets used pretty well.

You could look at Community websites - powered by Localbiz—Localbiz Project, linking education with enterprise, we have one but don't use it as a revenue stream, but I'm sure it could be turned into this.

Could you be a bit more specific about what you don't like? Most of the idiot-proofing can be turned off or disabled such as UAC, once its been tweeked a bit it's actually a pretty good OS. Windows XP is getting pretty long in the tooth now and really wouldn't recommend it on a new PC. Any of the manufacturer OEM licences offered for sale such as HP or Dell are only legal if purchased with that manufacturers hardware, you need to find an unbranded OEM pack and purchase it with some form of hardware for it to be legal, plus it must be an unopened pack.

We now have a member of SLT who deal with this stuff. As soon as we spot it, they get their computer account locked. This stays locked until they've seen the member of SLT responsible, no 'can you put them back on' requests are accepted under any circumstances. The SLT keeps a log of any violations of AUP and the punishment increases depending on number of incidents, so they start off with a warning, then letter home, the detention plus letter home, then complete network ban for a fixed period, etc. Getting a member of SLT involved seemed to crack this problem, especially the very firm line he takes in not allowing them back on until they've seen him.

As stated in the article, there is an approximate cash economy of 14% GDP, which is over £200bn which goes untaxed, this economy is within the individual, sole trader and small business sphere, not large corporates. If you account for tax on that at roughly 40%, which is roughly the percentage of GDP the gov takes in taxes, that's £80bn. The individual proportion is £5.8bn PLUS £1.3bn for ghost workers PLUS £1.8bn for undeclared second jobs, so £8.9bn. The large corporation share of unpaid corporation tax is under 50% of the £6.9bn, so £3.45bn at most. Even if we said all the unpaid VAT, NI, income tax, capital gains was not paid by large corporates, that's £26.9 bn. As all of these are also paid by sole traders and SME's, lets actually split it 50/50, so say £13.45bn each. So, on the large corporate side we have £16.9bn, compared to a minimum of £25.8bn, going up to £105.8bn if you include the cash economy in lost revenue from individuals, sole traders and sme's.

You also have on top of this the 'cash' economy which isn't accounted for in this. How many of you do a bit of computer support work on the side and get paid in cash or goods, do you declare this as income?

The problem then is that the majority of people going to University at present would not be capable of doing anything other than the crap degrees, so rather than having 50% of students going onto University are you advocating that we go back to around the top 20% going to University like it used to be?
