I know what Vik means, quite often you need to know what type of school and size before recommending a product/solution. Maybe we could have icons next to the country icon indicating Primary/Secondary/FE/HE with different colours to indicate small/medium/large just so we've got a very quick way to determine roughly what type of school it is.

If you have Microsoft Expression Studio 4 (there are ways to get this free in schools), the Encoder Screen Capture program will do this.

Yeah, sorry, was trying very hard to not cause offence as I knew someone on here was bound to be a member of one. It's just from personal experience when we persuaded a friend to come along to one and naively went to a local amateur production which we'd been 'persuaded' to go to. Not a very pleasant experience, put it that way (also explains the audience totalling 8 people!). We've since been to some fantastic amateur productions after doing a bit of research, but as a first time 'let's try this', I would say it's safer to try a professional concert, sorry! Oh, and as for joining one, sorry, really not my cup of tea, plus I'm busy doing other voluntary stuff with archery/rugby clubs.

Yes, we've started on that after spending xmas with my brother and his family as they'd bought it for xmas as a family present. Mrs on they way home hinted (well, told me) that we should get it. Many a happy evening spent banging away with the mrs now.......on the drums that is.

Yeah, not 'entirely' faultless, but in comparison to our old Windows file servers it is in a different ball park.

Oh there are still plenty of dirty hack NAS boxes available;) Our Oracle 7310 just sits there and works very, very nicely. Shadow copies - keep a whole months worth on there from the end of every lesson, plus 1 per day for a year and never fails. No more 'oh the servers randomly decided to delete all the shadow copies' which we had on server 2003. No more disk space issues or doing complicated stuff with DFS to manage shares across 7+ file servers. No more windows update fun on it, just one update about every 3-6 months, which is generally to add shiny new features (features which some other NAS providers are charging a fortune in licensing for). I have to say, it's top of the list in pieces of kit that have reduced my stress levels and workload, including virtualising most of our servers.

I wouldn't call it a 'fully' managed service, but with Ricoh when you buy their printers they provide a box which sits on the network and does the ordering of required consumables, books engineer for callout if there is a fault. They also supply and install print management solutions, the only bit I'm not sure about is if they do full management of your print server. Definitely worth speaking to as you only get charged a 'per copy' print charge, no management fees and the cost per page is competitive. You want to consider though, if you outsource part of your job, is that grounds for management to review your payscale in the downwards direction?

Unless your file server is also a domain controller you'll get the authentication traffic anyway and I would certainly never run my main file shares on a dc on any large network. Also, the latency on the ip stack on NAS boxes is generally much lower than windows file servers. Shadow copy is fully supported by nearly all decent NAS devices, file screening by some, dfs is supported. You also get extra features like de-dupe, access based enumeration, ssd caching.

It's not just for you youngun's, anyone can join as long as they're fairly active. There are a few events just for the Under 40's, but otherwise any age is welcome.

Why not just set up a gmail account and get that to send/receive mail for his work account. Edit: In settings, Account and Import, add a pop3 account, then in send mail from another address set up his business email address.

It might also be worth bypassing your leasing company and speak to Kyocera directly (KYOCERA MITA Serviceworld - downloads, drivers, documentations, utilities | Home - print copy scan fax) to find out if they have any solutions to the problem or if the printers are incapable of doing what you need. If Kyocera come up with a solution, then get the school to bill the support company for your time or knock it off the next invoice as they haven't provided the support you are paying for. If Kyocera deem the printers to be incapable of doing what you need, get it in writing off Kyocera and go back to the leasing comapny for either replacing the printers with the appropriate printers at their cost, or cancelling the agreement.

Try changing the printers settings to print the pictures at a lower resolution, usually in the advanced section somewhere, don't know the Kyocera's. Make sure you document all conversations you've had with the leasing company, especially if these are the printers they recommended to you as being suitable. You may have cause to argue that the equipment supplied is not fit for purpose and in breach on contract. You could then either get them to fix the problem at their expense, or cancel the contract and look elsewhere.

We have the RA mounts from CP-Ltd, they're fantastic and very easy to install. If mounting onto an existing pole, they do different fixings so just make sure you get the right ones. We did try fiddling around with existing or universal mounts, complete waste of time.

So it's a waste of time then and won't do what you want as that will effectively just add extra storage space to your existing servers. In the Dell range, you'd need to be looking at the NX-4 or if you want unified storage the NS-120 or the NS-480.

There are other rooms ya know Anyway: Some good theatres in your area, try a play or even an Opera (yes, I know, I though I'd hate it but went and really enjoyed it, make sure it's a professional performance and not the local amateur dramatics society although some of them are very good!) You've got some great countryside around you, get out there and enjoy it. Why do indoor rock climbing when you've got the real things on your doorstep :-) Archery - you could sign up for a beginners course, usually 6 sessions to see if you like it, compulsory anyway if you want to continue with it.

@EduTech Must be quite a wrench not having a dog once your used to having one around. Ours is just coming up to 15, he's losing his sight, has arthritis and digestion problems. Up to about a year ago he would race to the front door as soon as you put the key in the lock, now he just lays there and takes a good few minutes before he manages to get up. Just trying to give him as nice a time as possible at the moment as it's won't be long before we come home and he stays on his bed or we have to pay 'that' visit to the vet. Really dreading it as although we've really loved all the dogs we've had, this one has been very special.

It can take a long, long time for rescue dogs to settle in and regain the trust and confidence. Plenty of attention when he does something right, but also don't be too soft on him either or he won't learn his place in his new pack which will cause all sorts of problems.

As said previously, length of copper is 100m max, but this can also be reduced by interference from other stuff along the route that's near the cable. I presume you would be following paths of existing cabling, if so, either buy or rent a fluke tester that can do certification testing and check for current levels of interferance on the cables. You then need to determine a main run route to your proposed cab location, pull a cable through and test. All these tests need to be done when the school is in use and the majority of electrical equipment is switched on, especially lights. If you're not getting results well within the upper limits for noise then you need to reconsider or find new routes through and re-test.

Looks a really lovely dog, nice one! Sounds like hopefully he has a labrador brain rather than a cocker spaniel brain, but it does take dogs a while to regain their personality after they've had the upheaval and distress of a rescue centre. Good on ya though for getting a rescue dog, it really is unbelievable how some people treat their pets and it's nice to see one get a good home :-)

My favourite beers at the moment are any from Ossett Brewery, fantastic stuff. Don't think you'll find them down your way though, they're mainly just in West Yorkshire.

Just to clear the support thing up, Oracle are continuing with the 7000 series unified storage range with new hadrware recently released as well, so no problems with ongoing support for those :-) What they have dropped is their high end Sun SANS which were rebadged versions of someone elses SANs I believe. They are however about to launch some new high end gear, but that really isn't in the ballpark for schools.
