Ok, thanks Sivadam. Just in an awkward spot atm where we need to replace the SIMS server, but really want to put it on Server 2008 R2 as all our other servers are on that. Think we may have to bite the bullet and use 2008 if it's still not supported in the spring release, ah well.

Have they confirmed support for Server 2008 R2 as the O/S for the server running SIMS rather than just for ADPS?

Be careful, barcode scanners for Library systems will be set up with specific pre/post barcode codes and set up to use with specific barcode types. Stuff this up and you'll have a very unhappy Librarian

Visio is good for this, you can also link it to an existing asset database to pull equipment details from if you have one.

Fair enough, what O/S you putting on the servers? On software with W7, we have over 200 various bits of software (don't ask!) and out of those we had problems with in total 3 bits of software, one we binned and 2 we upgraded to the latest version. We did stick with 32-bit though, 64-bit yes you are going to have fun and games ;-)

Yep, as long as they've remembered to log off that is ;-) Why not get it all done in one big move, if you're going from CC3/4 to Vanilla you're going to have to rebuild most of it anyway I presume. Might as well move to W7 at the same time rather than having another big upgrade in a year or 2.

If you're also planning a move to Windows 7 as well, we've found our profile resets have dropped from several a day to 1 every couple of weeks with roaming profiles.

Roaming here, we have a policy to allow students the freedom to customise their desktop etc. It's worked really well since we introduced this in September, we get far fewer problems than when we took the lock everything down approach as the students feel they have more ownership of their account and therefore don't fight against the system so much.

Cheapo Logitech mice here, work pretty well. Oh and charging back to departments for damaged/stolen mice seems to make them last longer as well

It's an even bigger headache for the school when a laptop gets stolen and has confidential data in an unencrypted part of the drive, think it's up to a £500k fine now.

How are they going to back up any work on them and how are you going to ensure the backup is encrypted?

Works very well apart from staff losing the USB keys:doh: Make sure you keep a copy of the backup key from the usb key and also check that the recovery key is being stored in active directory. You need to have some firm policies in place, such as not keeping the usb key in the laptop bag. Also, when (not if) a memeber of staff loses their usb key you really need to be re-encrypting the hard drive with a new encryption key. If they just break their key then just copy the encryption key onto a new usb stick.
