Yes, we do that already, we need some way to do a similar thing but on pretty much live data, so we can ascertain what sites/users are using up all the bandwidth at this point in time so we can take some immediate action. It's becomming a real problem, yes the real answer is to get a faster internet connection, but that's not going to happen for quite a while, if at all, so we need some way to proactively monitor it in real time.

@gshaw How many users and how many client computers do you have? How many servers are you looking at virtualising and what sort of things are they doing?

We are using Forefront TMG and our internet connection is being maxed out (yes we do need a faster connection. but not an option at the moment). What I need is a way to view live or nearly live data on what sites/users are currently consuming all our bandwidth, anyone know of any way of doing this even if it means buying extra reporting software?

Yes, it supports CIFS/SMB and has active directory integration. You'll get better performance than running as a SAN for file serving as it will have much lower latency on the ip stack. You also haven't got the fun and games of extra switches/vlans to configure as per j17sparkys diagram. It certainly makes life easier to manage this way, leave your application servers virtualised and let your dedicated storage box look after the file shares.

On O2, tried google dns and open dns with no joy.

Why not just use the NAS capability of the ReadyNAS and host the file shares directly on that, it would certainly be quicker than running it as iSCSI through your virtualised servers.

Best bet is if you have a spare pc (can be an old one) put 2 nics in it and set up some firewall software like ipcop. Have the external port of this plugged into a non vlanned port on your switch and the internal on a vlanned port.

Well, the HT wouldn't authorise me to claim my mileage to drive down, but have now managed to find a sensible train journey at a sensible price which she's agreed to. Trainline etc were coming up with either a stupid route via London, or a 1 change route that was £220 each way. Bit of research and I've managed to get a 1 change route for £94 return.

Yes, that would be good, although now I'm delving a bit deeper it's not as bad as it first appears. A lot of the problems that earlier Academies faced have now been overcome, so don't read too much into the horror stories you hear. Main expense is the MIS license (amazing how every other bit of software we use the license is transferred free of charge!) and any services the LEA will no longer be providing like internet access.

For duplicate files, bit of a pain, but you could do: dir *.* /S /OS > files.txt This will give you a list of all files sorted by size, it's then a case of hunt for files the same size and name, bit manual I know.

Robocopy will do this, it would be something like (but please check this before using): Robocopy s:\staff\*.* s:\archive\*.* /E /MOVE /MINAGE:730

Even if you go it alone, you have plenty of support options without buying into a managed service/support contract. For a start, combination of Edugeek and Google solves 99% of problems. Then there is your LEA team, Microsoft Technical Support (charged per incident) and then stack loads of companies who can provide specialist support :-) Have confidence in yourself and your abilities, set up a small test network, get it figured out, ask questions on here and you soon have a nice working vanilla network and be wondering what all the fuss was about!
