It depends on the UPS - I think most are USB into one host, which has the software running, which then deals with the servers over the LAN. Until last year, we just had our server cab (which includes local mini-core switch) on the UPS. When we put in our new UPS's (x2) we put the whole server room on them (some on one, some on both) so the internet router, firewall, mini-core switch, actual-core switch and servers are all powered up. Before anything starts shutting down after x minutes, it sends the email alerts, then (if power still off) shuts off internet and LAN cab first, to keep servers up longer, then progressively shuts other stuff down. VERY quick calculation using APC's UPS selector with guesstimate of your server specs is just short of 1,000 va per host. There's a 2500 va UPS for £900 ex VAT on scan.co.uk so just over £1,000 sounds about the right price range for a VERY quick guesstimate. I'd push for £1,500 or £2,000 if you can, to give you breathing room.

Also, when you view 'previous versions', if the backups are in the same folder as the actual save file, you can reload the save file's content - complete with XML - into the textbox of the open file. I realise you probably wouldn't normally have save and backup files in the same folder, but for testing I did, and managed to confuse the software. Might be worth a different file extension for backups versus live files, particularly as some are XML and some are only text. What is 'undo' supposed to do? It currently wipes my entire document, then (per redo functionality discussed above) puts it back again. Is it more a 'revert to last backup/saved version'? Peter

Our previous fire support company wanted to charge £300 to plug a cable (that I'd already run and stripped ready) into one of the 'NO' ports for tripping our signing-in system. One engineer was friendly and said "there's the port, bring the cable in through this grommet, but wait till I've gone... no engineers will ever check whether you've paid for it to be there..." :-)

This, when my colleague goes round and tidies cabs. They're about 3/4 done - the rest have 2m cables here there and everywhere.

I'm not an expert on this, but I believe you can go into C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers and find the drivers you've just half-installed (by modify or create date?) and delete them. Or, delete the whole subfolder and restore it from backup? Peter (Snap!)

Can anyone have a look at these and tell me if they look good/bad/otherwise? It's our IBM SAN. Store 3 and 4 are SAS disks, store 5 and 6 are SATA. Our vSphere 5.1 estate occupies all of it. Data copy speeds between disks (even two disks on the same VM on the same array/LUN) seems very slow; I don't have hard numbers at the moment, but something doesn't seem right somewhere. Cheers. Thanks for that. Do you use classroom? Does deleting groups impact on membership of the classrooms, and/or accidently delete the classrooms, or...? I'd not really come across GAM so I've just watched 20 minutes of a setup video; I'll come back to it later but as a programmer I will certainly make use of it. Is turning off Realsmart just a case of disabling their admin account? What do you do with SSO now? GADS or SAML SSO? ADFS? Peter

We will be leaving Realsmart this summer, so I'm starting to look at the physical process as regards Google. Has anyone already left them yet, and have you any pointers? I've no problem with getting GADS and GAPS up and running, and we'll be using Salamander to get the data from SIMS etc, but I'm conscious of not ending up with duplicate accounts or accounts disappearing as/when we switch off Realsmart. Are you distributing the satellite/virgin cables (f-type) around the house, via the central patching point, or are you terminating them in the central point with the Sky/Freesat/Virgin boxes located there then distributing HDMI to the TV points? With the latter, if you have your Freesat, Tivo and V+ in the central location, you can choose which to watch anywhere you like, whenever you like. Get a new x-Sat-Live box (I made that up) you just put it in the central point and can watch it anywhere in the house. I want to do the latter, but I'm also looking at Sky Q once it settles down.
